Background / History

Research Career and the Institute Explosion

Makomo attended university with Professor Juniper and Burnet. By the time she meets Xia You, she has already been a somewhat well-known professor for three or four years, despite appearing roughly his age 1248 1280.

At the research institute near Striaton City, she studied Musharna’s dream mist as a cleaner energy source. The malice and desires of people around Musharna corrupted it, turning its mist black and triggering an energy overload that destroyed the facility. Musharna disappeared in the explosion 1248.

Makomo repeatedly searched the ruins for years. Based on her research into dreams, she believed Musharna had been displaced into another space rather than killed—a theory ultimately confirmed by its rescue 1249.

Meeting Xia You and Recovering Musharna

Makomo meets Xia You, Dawn, and Cheryl at the institute ruins and accepts their help searching for Musharna. Xia You retrieves it from the subspace created during the explosion, and Makomo tearfully embraces her recovered partner 1248 1249 1250.

After Nurse Joy confirms that Musharna is healthy apart from weakness and lingering mental fatigue, Makomo guides the travelers around Striaton City and welcomes them into the apartment she shares with her younger sister, Songlu 1250.

Joining the Journey

Initially unfamiliar with live Pokémon battles, Makomo watches Xia You’s Striaton Gym challenge and learns about Pokémon Contests through Dawn. She then accompanies the group toward Nuvema Town, where she intends to have Professor Juniper examine Musharna 1250 1254 1255 1265 1280.

The journey introduces her to camping and the everyday bonds between traveling Trainers and their Pokémon. After hearing about Xia You’s encounter with Zekrom, she begins considering how much she could discover by remaining with him. Juniper encourages her to pursue firsthand research into rare Pokémon and ruins, and Makomo officially joins after Cheryl and Dawn welcome her 1269 1285 1289 1290.

Her travels also bring her into situations far removed from laboratory work. She helps confront Team Plasma members to protect other Trainers, identifies fleeing Boldore during a cave emergency, and joins Xia You and Dawn in diving toward the Abyssal Ruins 1302 1350 1411.

Research into Ho-Oh’s Blessing

Makomo becomes interested in Xia You’s claim that his body contains Ho-Oh’s power. Without telling him, she collects biological samples from his discarded intimate waste and examines them using portable research equipment 1380 1381 1389.

Her analysis leads her to conclude that the samples contain unusually high activity and life energy originating within Xia You’s body, which she attributes to Ho-Oh’s blessing. She hypothesizes that this energy can be absorbed by women, but recognizes that establishing its effects would require further samples and an actual test subject. She also discreetly sends some findings to two unnamed close friends for analysis 1389 1391.

Her scientific interest increasingly overlaps with personal fascination. At the Dragon Village Inn, she secretly watches Xia You and Cheryl through a crack in the wall, then remains awake all night and struggles to separate her observations from her emotional reactions 1394.

Eindoak Town and the Harvest Festival

After Cheryl leaves the traveling party, Makomo continues with Xia You and Dawn and takes responsibility for cooking. The trio reaches Eindoak Town during preparations for its Harvest Festival 1438.

Xia You persuades Makomo to enter the festival’s battle event and lends her Gardevoir. Despite her beginner-level command skills, Gardevoir’s overwhelming strength carries her through the competition 1443 1445.

Following the celebration, Makomo secretly listens outside Xia You and Cogita’s room. The next morning, she and Xia You have difficulty meeting each other’s eyes. When she subsequently meets Bea, Makomo recognizes that she has fallen for Xia You and feels threatened by Bea’s interest in him; Xia You has not yet decided how to handle their relationship 1456 1457.

Her reserved manner gives way to open excitement when she encounters something new. Traveling with Trainers makes her enthusiastic about roadside Pokémon, unfamiliar plants, camping, and exploration.
