Xia You and Erika encountered Team Rocket’s attempt to capture Raikou, then helped the International Police raid the organization’s research base. Xia You caught the injured Raikou and reached Olivine City, where his Gym battle with Jasmine began.

• Xia You and Erika left Ecruteak City with Xiaomei’s Eevee, then met Marina and Kenta at a Pokémon Center and battled them.
• Xia You and the others discovered Team Rocket’s Bashou and Pusen capturing Electric-type Pokémon with a crystal, and Raikou appeared to stop them.
• Bashou and Pusen trapped Raikou with the crystal, but Xia You’s Gardevoir and Kenta’s Beedrill forced them to flee while Gengar tracked them to a Team Rocket research center.
• Xia You informed Looker about the base, and Anabel led the International Police in a raid that captured Dr. Sebastian.
• When Bashou and Pusen attacked Raikou again, Xia You freed it by having Gengar destroy the crystal, then pursued it with Erika and caught it after a battle by the lake.
• Xia You and Erika reached Olivine City, where Jasmine greeted them at the Gym and began a two-on-two match against Xia You.
• Jasmine sent out Metagross against Xia You’s Blastoise, and Blastoise countered its attacks with defensive moves and a spinning assault.

Xia You defeated Jasmine, traveled to Kuga City with Erika, and entered the Whirl Cup alongside Ash and Misty. After Misty and Ash were eliminated, Xia You won the final with his Red Gyarados and became the Whirl Islands Cup champion.

• Xia You defeated Jasmine’s Lucario with Charizard and received the Mineral Badge before choosing the sea route to Cianwood City with Erika.
• Xia You and Erika reached Kuga City, where he registered for the Whirl Cup and reunited with Ash, Misty, and Brock.
• Xia You advanced through the preliminaries and early rounds with Blastoise, while Ash and Misty also progressed through the tournament.
• Misty defeated Ash in the round of sixteen, then lost to Gaomei in the quarterfinals and accepted Xia You’s invitation to travel with him through the next region.
• Xia You defeated his quarterfinal opponent and Azhe in the semifinals, but Blastoise was too exhausted to battle in the final.
• Gaomei’s Chinchou paralyzed Blastoise in the final, so Xia You brought out his Red Gyarados, startling the crowd with its size and power.
• Red Gyarados defeated Gaomei’s Gyarados and Poliwrath, then swallowed Chinchou and spat it back into the water after Xia You ordered it to stop.
• The host declared Xia You the Whirl Islands Cup champion.

Xia You received the Sea God’s blessing and joined his friends in protecting Silver from Team Rocket. After finding Team Rocket’s underwater base, the group freed its captive Pokémon and began fighting through the facility.

• Xia You won the Whirl Islands Cup and received the Soul of the Sea’s unusual blessing, which let him sense Water-type Pokémon’s moods.
• Maya revealed that Team Rocket planned to capture Lugia, and Xia You stopped Jessie, James, and Meowth from stealing her Golden Scepter and rescued her from their balloon.
• Xia You and his friends met Ritchie and Shuichi, who introduced them to Silver, a young Lugia they had been protecting.
• Dr. Namba sent Team Rocket forces to seize Silver, but Xia You and Ash fought back until Erika, Misty, Ritchie, and the International Police helped drive them off.
• Silver’s mother arrived, and Xia You helped ease her suspicion before she left with Silver, and Poliwhirl then located Team Rocket’s seabed base.
• Xia You and his companions obtained diving gear, entered the underwater base, and freed dozens of caged Water-type Pokémon.
• After a Team Rocket member raised the alarm, Xia You ordered the group to wreck the base, while Dr. Namba, Cassidy, and Butch saw the intrusion on surveillance.

Xia You helped stop Dr. Namba’s scheme, then continued his Johto journey by defeating Chuck and receiving the GS Ball from Mr. Steel. He left Charizard at Charizard Canyon to train and returned to Azalea Gym, where his battle with Bugsy began.

• Xia You and Erika investigated Team Rocket’s rising sea base, uncovered Dr. Namba’s Pokémon-virus experiments, and escaped as the base flooded, while Anabel’s officers arrested many operatives.
• Maya asked Xia You to complete the Temple of the Sea’s inheritance ceremony, and he agreed after she confessed her feelings, and the next morning, they concealed what had happened from the others.
• Xia You defeated Chuck’s Primeape and Machoke, then Dragonite drew with Conkeldurr in the final match, earning Xia You the Storm Badge.
• In Azalea Town, Professor Elm and Mr. Steel examined the GS Ball, and Mr. Steel entrusted it to Xia You after they identified its connection to Ho-Oh, Lugia, and Celebi.
• Xia You and Erika traveled to Charizard Canyon, where Xia You found Ash’s Charizard training and had his own Charizard begin battling the canyon’s residents.
• After Charizard drew with a lower-ranked canyon Charizard, Xia You left him there to train until he could become the strongest in the canyon.
• Xia You and Erika returned to Azalea Gym, where Bugsy accepted Xia You’s challenge and sent out Spinarak to begin their three-on-three battle.
