• Flannery set the Gym battle rules at three Pokémon and introduced Torkoal as one of her strongest partners.

After catching Jigglypuff, Xia You thwarted its attempts to escape and retrieve its microphone. In Mauville City, he and Misty found the Gym closed for the day, then Xia You agreed to battle a boy hoping to prove his skill to his uncle.

• At camp, Jigglypuff tried to escape but Xia You's Pokémon blocked every route.
• Jigglypuff secretly searched Xia You's and Misty's backpacks for its microphone, but Gengar had it and kept it out of reach.
• On the third morning, Xia You and Misty arrived in Mauville City and found the Mauville Gym closed until the next day.
• While walking through Mauville Park, Xia You and Misty encountered a boy arguing with his uncle.
• The boy asked Xia You for a battle so he could show his uncle he was ready to challenge the Mauville Gym, and Xia You accepted.
