Background / History
Ash comes from Pallet Town and pursues the goal of becoming a Pokémon Master through Gym challenges and tournament participation. Before meeting Xin Mu, he had placed in the Indigo League’s top sixteen and become an honorary Trainer of the Orange League 11 12.
He, Misty, and Brock originally intended to travel to Johto for the Silver Conference. Ash overslept, causing them to miss their ship. Their rebooked sailing subsequently turned back because of unexplained weather conditions and docked in Donghuang instead 5.
Ash decided to explore Donghuang rather than immediately resume the original itinerary. The region’s different approach to Pokémon education, and its selection to host the next Pokémon World Championships, interested him. His group visited a Pokémon school, where he first encountered Xin Mu 5.
Appearance
- Hair: Spiky 5.
- Clothing: A red-and-white cap and blue-and-white athletic shirt 5.
- Usual companion: Pikachu, who also rides on his shoulder 5 16.
Personality
Ash is straightforward and intensely enthusiastic about battling. He challenges opponents ranging from rookie Trainers and unfamiliar passersby to Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, and Champions. Discovering that his Pokédex cannot identify Meownei immediately makes him interested in battling her Trainer 6.
His enthusiasm can outrun his consideration for others: when Xin Mu arrives at the Pokémon Center, Ash is ready to begin immediately, prompting Misty to suggest letting their guest rest. Nevertheless, he accepts Xin Mu’s initial refusal without insisting and exchanges contact details to arrange a later match 7 12.
Defeat does not discourage him. After losing to Xin Mu, he proposes a six-on-six rematch and promises to win next time. His care for Pokémon is equally concrete: he takes Pikachu for treatment after their battle and helps Nurse Joy evacuate injured Pokémon during Team Rocket’s attack 13 15.
Abilities & Skills
Pokémon Battling
- Competitive experience: His Indigo League and Orange League record establishes him as an experienced opponent despite his young appearance 12.
- Improvisation: When Leech Seed traps Pikachu, Ash orders him to direct Thunder at himself, destroying the vines at the cost of substantial stamina 13.
- Battlefield observation: Pikachu’s electricity reveals Meownei’s invisible flower stem, allowing Ash to recognize that Pikachu is being physically restrained rather than held by Confusion 13.
- Knowledge limitations: He is unfamiliar with Protean and knows little about Pokémon Abilities, leaving him poorly prepared for Meownei’s repeated type changes 12.
- Communication limitations: He relies on Pikachu’s gestures and body language as well as vocalizations; precise communication becomes harder during a frantic battle 13.
Rally Participation
- Borrows Brock’s Onix for a Pokémon-powered transport race rather than expecting Pikachu to pull him 30.
- Draws a bicycle as his transport, while Pikachu enters separately with Misty’s Staryu and draws a scooter. Both teams fall behind during the early race 30.
Equipment / Items
- Pokédex — Used to scan Meownei, but its lack of Paldea data prevents identification 6.
- Ordinary Poké Ball — Given to Xin Mu as compensation for his destroyed bicycle. Its official value is 200; Xin Mu accepts it against a 150 claim and returns 50 in change 6.
- Bicycle — Assigned to him for the transport rally 30.
Relationships
- Pikachu — Partner Pokémon and battle companion. Pikachu eagerly joins his challenges, and Ash prioritizes medical care after their defeat by Meownei 7 12 13.
- Misty — Traveling friend who scolds him over missed travel plans and Pikachu’s bicycle destruction. She also explains his competitive record to Xin Mu before their match 5 12.
- Brock — Traveling friend who helps settle the bicycle compensation and referees Ash’s battle with Xin Mu. Ash later borrows his Onix for the rally 6 12 30.
- Xin Mu — His first contact in Donghuang and a prospective rival. Their meeting begins with bicycle compensation and develops into a promise to hold a six-on-six rematch 7 15.
- Professor Oak — A professor Ash knows well. Xin Mu considers Ash’s connection to Oak a possible route to contacts and Pokéblock sales channels 9 10.
- Jessie, James, and Meowth — Persistent pursuers of Pikachu who follow Ash into Donghuang and attack the Pokémon Center in another capture attempt 7 14.
- Nurse Joy — Works alongside Ash to move injured Pokémon to safety during the Pokémon Center attack 15.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Xin Mu
Pikachu releases accumulated electricity at the school, destroying Xin Mu’s bicycle without injuring anyone. Ash and his companions apologize, then settle the damage through a Poké Ball trade because they have no usable cash on hand 5 6.
Ash subsequently asks for a battle. Xin Mu postpones it and recommends a Pokémon Center checkup for Pikachu. After exchanging email addresses, Ash follows up with confirmation that Pikachu is healthy and an invitation to a booked battlefield 7 11.
First Battle and Rematch Promise
| Phase | Event |
|---|---|
| Opening | Ash chooses Pikachu for a one-on-one match refereed by Brock. Thunderbolt fails because Meownei uses Spikes and Protean to become Ground-type 12. |
| Restraint | Meownei slams Pikachu onto hidden Spikes and later traps him with Leech Seed. Ash uses a self-directed Thunder to break the vines 12 13. |
| Defeat | Ash switches to Quick Attack, but Meownei’s Shadow Claw changes her to Ghost-type, nullifying the attack and knocking Pikachu out 13. |
| Aftermath | Ash takes Pikachu for treatment. During the ensuing Team Rocket attack, he remains inside helping evacuate injured Pokémon 13 15. |
| Future challenge | With the Center’s dormitories closed, the group plans to camp elsewhere. Ash and Xin Mu shake hands on a future six-on-six battle; the match is not shown in the supplied chapters 15. |
Pokéblock Sampling
Ash joins his companions in tasting Xin Mu’s Pokéblocks. A red-and-white block he expects to taste like strawberry is instead intensely spicy, sending him headfirst into a fountain. His next two choices are extremely astringent and extremely bitter 16.
