Personality
Pikachu is eager to battle: shortly after recovering from an electrical overload, he is already willing to accept another challenge. He also dislikes staying inside a Poké Ball 7.
He responds to danger without always waiting for instructions, releasing electricity when he feels Meownei restraining him. His trust in Ash is evident when he immediately follows the unusual order to use Thunder on himself to escape Leech Seed 12 13.
Abilities & Skills
Electrical Energy
Pikachu stores electricity in his cheek pouches. Excessive buildup without timely discharge can cause him to lose control, as demonstrated by the outburst that destroys Xin Mu’s bicycle 5 12.
- Thunderbolt: Fires a concentrated electrical attack. Its light exposes the outline of Meownei’s otherwise invisible flower stem 12 13.
- Thunder: Produces powerful lightning; Pikachu uses it on himself to burn away Leech Seed’s vines, sacrificing considerable stamina to escape 13.
- Limit: His electrical attacks cannot damage Meownei while Protean gives her Ground typing 12 13.
Quick Attack
- Uses Quick Attack to close the distance after Ash abandons electrical attacks against Meownei 13.
- The strike fails when Meownei uses Shadow Claw and changes to Ghost typing through Protean 13.
Static
- Pikachu’s Ability is Static, which can cause paralysis through physical contact 13.
- It does not activate during the documented battle. Xin Mu nevertheless identifies allowing Meownei to touch Pikachu as a tactical risk 13.
Communication
- Communicates with Ash through vocalizations, gestures, and body language 13.
- Struggles to explain his predicament clearly during a fast-moving battle, delaying Ash’s understanding of Meownei’s restraint 13.
Variable Battle Strength
- The narration characterizes Pikachu’s prowess as fluctuating between Legendary Pokémon and beginner Pokémon 8.
- Xin Mu is unsure how strong Pikachu currently is after arriving in Donghuang. No definite level or power advancement is established 11.
History
Arrival in Donghuang
Pikachu accompanies Ash, Misty, and Brock to Donghuang after their journey toward Johto is disrupted. Ash oversleeps and misses their original ship; the replacement sailing turns back because of unexplained weather and docks in Donghuang instead 5.
At a Pokémon school, Pikachu suffers an electrical overload that causes property damage but no injuries. Xin Mu’s bicycle is burned black, with its tires melted. Ash’s group cannot produce the requested 150 in cash, so Ash compensates Xin Mu with a Poké Ball and receives 50 in change 5 6.
Xin Mu postpones Ash’s immediate battle challenge and recommends a Pokémon Center checkup. Ash later confirms by email that Pikachu is perfectly healthy and arranges an evening match 7 11.
Battle Against Meownei
Pikachu faces Meownei in a one-on-one battle at the Pokémon Center, refereed by Brock 12.
| Exchange | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Thunderbolt against Spikes | Meownei’s Protean changes her to Ground type, making Thunderbolt ineffective 12. |
| Restraint and hidden Spikes | Meownei lifts and slams Pikachu onto the hazards; his electrical discharge cannot free him 12. |
| Thunder and Leech Seed | Thunder fails to damage Meownei. Leech Seed restrains Pikachu, drains his stamina, and prevents him from avoiding another fall onto Spikes 13. |
| Thunder aimed at himself | Pikachu burns away the vines and escapes, but loses substantial stamina 13. |
| Quick Attack against Shadow Claw | Meownei becomes Ghost type, nullifies Quick Attack, and lands the finishing blow 13. |
Pikachu regains consciousness shortly after losing, and Ash takes him inside for treatment. The match exposes the limitations of his Electric- and Normal-type moves against Meownei’s repeated type changes 13.
Pokémon Center Attack
Team Rocket attacks the Pokémon Center with a robot to capture Pikachu. Meownei destroys the machine before the trio even sees their target; Ash has been helping Nurse Joy evacuate injured Pokémon during the smoke-filled emergency 14 15.
Afterward, Ash and Xin Mu agree to a future six-on-six battle. Pikachu is the only Pokémon Ash has brought on this trip 15.
Intercollegiate Rally
Pikachu enters the rally with Misty’s Staryu, occupying the participant’s role rather than pulling a human Trainer. Their assigned transport is a scooter, while Ash separately competes with Brock’s Onix 30.
The pair is disqualified when Staryu uses Water Gun for propulsion, violating the prohibition on moves during the race. Their early exit also disrupts Team Rocket’s plan to drug them with drinks and abduct Pikachu under the pretext of taking them to the Pokémon Center 31.
