History

Ancient heritage and decline

The Misty Sect traces its lineage back roughly ten thousand years and was counted among four major sects preserving records of the former Immortal Path: the Misty Sect, Incense-Passing Cult, Great Forest Temple, and Divine Blade Sect 209 327. Its martial arts were adapted from older cultivation methods after Primordial Qi became too scarce for ordinary practitioners to cultivate the original arts 210.

By Ou Peng's era, the sect had declined from its former standing. It had lacked a suitable successor for its Immortal Path inheritance for nearly fifty years, while Misty Peak itself lacked the jade veins or Dragon Veins needed to sustain its ancient formations and cultivation environment 812 1066.

Expansion under Ou Peng

Ou Peng and the Misty Six Tigers sought to restore the sect's influence through recruitment, cultivation, and territorial expansion. Their revised five-year plan prioritized raising the sect's Jianghu status, while medicinal herbs from a secret realm became central to improving disciples' martial arts 35 145.

The sect brought the Luoshui Gang under its control after Ou Peng subdued Shui Yupeng and promised him the post of Vice Gang Leader. This increased its land and water operations, but also heightened the ambitions and exposure of the Misty Sect 327.

Destruction of the sect

The Righteous Path Alliance systematically dismantled Misty Sect branch sects and peripheral forces before attacking Misty Peak. Shangguan Fengliu and Xu Peihua were killed during an ambush, and the attackers returned their bodies as both provocation and warning 329 331.

Ou Peng concluded that the secret realm's discovery had drawn attention to the sect, though the Righteous Path Alliance had already coveted the Misty Sect's Immortal Path legacy and lacked only a suitable opportunity to strike 331. He ordered Hu Yunyi to take martial arts manuals and lower-ranked disciples through a secret passage, preserving whatever lineage could escape 331.

The defense of Misty Peak failed despite resistance led by Ou Peng, Zhang Chengyue, Li Jian, Liu Qingyang, Wen Wenhai, and Mingcui Hall. The Righteous Path Alliance was later joined by forces from the Great Forest Temple and Incense-Passing Cult; most elite disciples were killed, injured, or had their martial arts crippled 333 335 336. Less than half of the elite disciples escaped the destruction 327.

Misty Hall

The surviving disciples were taken into the Incense-Passing Cult, where Yang Ruying became Hall Master of the newly established Misty Hall 338. The hall preserved the sect's surviving members but remained isolated and heavily controlled; other Incense-Passing Cult disciples were restricted from associating with it 565 566.

Abbess Jingyi later disclosed that the Incense-Passing Cult had never intended to keep Misty Hall permanently. Releasing it would preserve the Misty Sect's lineage, prevent the Righteous Path Alliance from becoming too dominant, and restore a three-way balance in Jianghu 973 974.

Restoration

Abbess Jingyi offered to restore the Misty Sect under three conditions: subordination to the Incense-Passing Cult, cooperation concerning a mysterious item, and a marriage alliance between the two factions 975. Ou Yan accepted the restoration despite its restrictions, recognizing that Misty Hall on Shixin Peak could not replace the original sect at Misty Peak 975.

The reconstituted sect retook Misty Manor from the Righteous Path Alliance, though the estate was left in ruins and required extensive rebuilding and defenses 1043 1045. Zhang Xiaohu became Great Sect Leader and later received Hu Yunyi and roughly two thousand returning Misty Sect disciples 1063 1093.

Under Zhang Xiaohu, the sect integrated former Incense-Passing Cult and Righteous Path Alliance disciples, created new administrative halls, and formally established the Misty Eleven Halls 1085 1086 1087.
