Background / History
Kaim began traveling in Hoenn with a Pokédex and the ambition of becoming a Pokémon Master. His starter was Eevee, while his father gave him Torchic. Collecting his Badges took more than twice as long as it did for friends who began traveling alongside him. Detours contributed to the delay, but Kaim believed that even a focused journey would have taken him at least three years. Concluding that he was unsuited to battling, he skipped the Pokémon League, traveled through Kalos, and entered university to study Pokémon 1.
He met Cynthia during his university years. After giving a seminar on Sinnoh mythology and archaeology, she visited his laboratory and read his Unown research proposal. Impressed by his observations and concern for Pokémon, she offered him an assistant position after graduation. Kaim accepted and began learning from her before completing his studies 2 3.
After graduating, he moved to Sinnoh and became Cynthia’s assistant and butler. She taught him archaeology and battling, introduced him to a Gym, and eventually gave him a spare room in her home. His initially formal manner faded as he took responsibility for meals, cleaning, and reminding her to look after herself 3 4.
Appearance
Kaim is described as average-looking, with a largely expressionless face and well-developed muscles from regular Gym training. Attention to his hairstyle, skin care, and clothing later improves his presentation 17 26 33 36.
- Height: Close enough to Cynthia’s that their faces are approximately level when standing together 37.
- Usual clothing: Plain, clean sportswear and practical garments chosen for easy movement and quick drying 29 36.
- Traditional outfit: Wears an indigo kimono with a black overcoat embroidered with navy-blue moon motifs during the Ecruteak visit 16.
- Updated wardrobe: Buys around three outfits selected with Cynthia and Caitlin’s help, including a navy cardigan, white shirt, and gray skinny pants 36.
- Expression: His face and tone rarely change; Cynthia particularly treasures the moments when his expression softens 26.
Personality
Kaim is reserved, blunt, and initially difficult to approach. His Gym colleagues nevertheless come to regard him as kind and considerate after seeing how seriously he trains and how readily he seeks advice. His diligence encourages the other Trainers to work harder as well 4 5.
His care for others is practical rather than demonstrative. He cooks, organizes supplies, notices fatigue, and intervenes when people close to him neglect themselves. Although he complains about chores and being teased, he continues helping because those relationships matter to him. Cynthia values his sincerity, dedication, and refusal to betray others’ trust 7 13 31.
Repeated defeats leave him deeply insecure about his own ability. Comparisons with his talented sister and Steven reinforce that insecurity, and he comes to trust other people’s judgment more than his own. His central weakness is not slow thinking but repeatedly reconsidering decisions he has already made 41 42.
Kaim is also sensitive to suffering. Alto Mare’s use of Legendary Pokémon in its defense machine troubles him, and he refuses to frighten the injured Celebi into helping him. Despite his guarded manner, he can express affection directly, especially when reassuring Cynthia or speaking about Pokémon 10 13 16 25.
Abilities & Skills
Tactical Battling
- Opponent analysis: Studies battle footage and compiles summaries of opposing Trainers’ styles, strengths, weaknesses, and likely matchups for Cynthia 23.
- Flexible Gym battles: Adjusts his approach to challengers’ Badge counts and selects Gym-owned Pokémon when working as a Gym Trainer 5 47.
- Independent strategy: Uses Blaziken’s Endure and Reversal to defeat Sumo’s Hawkazaru, then prepares Lucario’s Earthquake around the opponent’s expected response 48.
- Reading expectations: Uses U-turn to exploit Sumo’s assessment of his remaining team and catch her off guard 49.
- Precise timing: Executes Cynthia’s high-risk, last-moment evasion technique with Umbreon, minimizing movement while creating an opening to counterattack 50.
- Former limitation: Self-doubt delays his commands and prevents him from committing to winning choices. Cynthia also warns that copying her methods cannot replace finding a style suited to his own Pokémon 41 47.
Physical Training and Martial Arts
- Conditioning: Performs strength training, aerobic exercise, and sparring alongside the Fighting-type Gym’s Trainers and Pokémon 19.
- Body control: Ranks among the Gym’s best in overall physical ability and excels at full-body activities such as parkour, despite others possessing greater raw strength 19.
- Technique instruction: Personally spars with Blaziken and teaches it combat techniques. Eventually, Blaziken’s skill and superior physical abilities make it impossible for Kaim to keep winning 40.
- Protective intervention: Stops Cyrus’s Weavile’s claws bare-handed to protect Cynthia, suffering a deep hand wound in the process 21.
- Restraint: Blocks an aggressive man’s punch and prevents him from releasing a Pokémon in a crowded venue 38.
Research and Technical Work
- Unown research: Produces a proposal whose observations and fresh perspective attract Cynthia’s interest 2.
- Archaeological assistance: Helps investigate ruins, carries equipment, backs up research data, and contributes interpretations of ancient structures 5 7 44.
- Network investigation: With Masaki’s help, accesses Team Galactic’s network and retrieves evidence of its Red Chain research 19.
- Video editing: Prepares video and effects for Cynthia and Iris’s fashion-show segment using the footage available 39.
Caretaking and Organization
- Household management: Handles Cynthia’s meals and cleaning, correcting the unhealthy habits she maintained before he moved in 4 30.
- Pokémon care: Prepares food for both his own Pokémon and Cynthia’s, and helps condition her team before League matches 4 23 24.
- Travel arrangements: Plans routes, books accommodation, and manages expedition supplies 5.
- Event coordination: Supervises League security, directs staff, and helps organize crowd movement 22 23.
