I visited Professor Seven Gates's laboratory for the first time in years. After I became an instructor, Professor Seven Gates had given me a great deal of help as a researcher in a different field.
A guest happened to be visiting the professor, so I was introduced as well. It turned out to be Professor Oak, renowned as an authority on Pokémon research.
And so, despite feeling that we were worlds apart as researchers, I sat down with the two professors.
Most of Professor Oak's stories were about a certain boy.
Apparently, that boy had almost completed the Pokédex for Falian City and Kanto.
There were said to be over six hundred species of Pokémon. Even excluding New King, there were at least three hundred species elsewhere. Add males, females, and differently colored Pokémon, and there simply weren't enough people to catalog them all.
I had helped create the New King Pokédex before, and filling every page alone required considerable effort. So even if it couldn't be called complete, getting infinitely close to completion was already worthy of praise.
But there was something even more astonishing.
At just sixteen years old, that boy had conquered the Pokémon Leagues of Fayuan City and the Sevii Islands. Apparently, he had also been the runner-up in Kanto.
Although he hadn't broken the record held by Red, Kanto's youngest Champion, I doubted anyone else had reached the top of so many Leagues.
Moreover, apart from the Sevii Islands, he had raised his Pokémon from scratch in every place he visited. That apparently wasn't the case during the League tournaments, but even so, he could beat Gyms with Pokémon he had only just caught. How exactly did he train them?
As an instructor, I was very interested.
