Chu Xin thought over the methods used in the games to train Slowpoke and the Nido family, then settled on a direction for training Slowpoke and Nidoran.
Nidoran was suited to becoming a stationary artillery platform. His Ground typing could provide extremely high defense, making him a powerful tank capable of soaking up most damage, while the characteristics of his Poison typing could give him tremendous attack power. That made training Nidoran into a battlefield artillery platform a viable option.
Slowpoke, meanwhile, could be trained into a formidable tank. Chu Xin's team already had enough offensive power; what it lacked was defensive strength. Slowpoke's Hidden Ability, Regenerator, gave both her evolved forms, Slowking and Slowbro, exceptional staying power. Slowking was not only the sage of the sea, but also possessed tremendous defense and offensive power on par with Nidoran's. So if Slowpoke evolved into Slowking, Chu Xin could train her into a powerful tank that could reflect damage.
If Slowpoke evolved into Slowbro instead, she would be just as useful. Although Slowbro's offensive power was slightly inferior to Slowking's, her defense was stronger. She could hold out longer against an opponent's attacks, making her even better suited to being a tank. Slowbro also had the Hidden Ability Regenerator, giving her even greater staying power than Slowking. After all, Regenerator restored one-third of the Pokémon's maximum HP when it switched out.
If a Pokémon switched out while its Ability was being affected, Regenerator's HP recovery was checked before its Ability was restored. Thus, a Pokémon that had lost Regenerator due to effects such as Gastro Acid or Skill Swap would not recover HP upon switching out. A Pokémon that gained Regenerator through Skill Swap or Trace would recover HP when it switched out.
