Ability
Blaze/Solar Power
Roles
Wallbreaker, setup sweeper, artillery
Assessment
Compared with its two Mega Evolutions, regular Charizard had almost no advantages. With its Hidden Ability, Solar Power, regular Charizard holding a Life Orb or Choice Specs could outdamage Mega Charizard Y in sun, but with most sun teams using Mega Charizard Y as their weather setter, regular Charizard found itself in an extremely awkward position. If it ran Leftovers as a pivot, its quadruple weakness to Stealth Rock made it difficult to use Defog to perform Hazard Removal. Both Mega Evolutions also had vastly improved base bulk over regular Charizard, leaving it to make use of its rather unremarkable advantages in lower tiers.

Belly Drum (prioritize Speed and Attack): Belly Drum (Z-Belly Drum optional) + Fire Punch + Earthquake + Thunder Punch
Artillery (prioritize Speed and Special Attack): Roost + Fire Blast + Air Slash + Hidden Power Grass/Aura Sphere/Dragon Pulse
Choice Scarf/Choice Specs (prioritize Speed and Special Attack): Fire Blast + Overheat/Aura Sphere + Air Slash + Hidden Power Grass
Counterplay:
First, setting Stealth Rock as early as possible would severely restrict Charizard. Generally, Water walls or Dragon-type walls could counter its various sets. Keep your key walls healthy and maintain pressure with Stealth Rock; regular Charizard struggled to perform in any tier.
