|---|---|---|
| Elite Jōnin-level Servant | 262 | Naruto identifies Jiraiya, Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Tobi as four elite Jōnin-level Servants summoned for the Sapporo confrontation. |
| Sage Mode — above Quasi-Kage | 321 | Absorbs natural energy over several minutes. In this state, he surpasses Yamata no Orochi. His Fire Style is LV4, while his other reproduced techniques remain substantially weaker than those of the character used as his model. |
| More perfect Sage Mode | 439 | While resurrected, manifests two toad sages on his shoulders. Their assistance produces a greater surge of natural energy and enables Sage Art: Goemon. |
Background and Identity
The first Jiraiya encountered by the Mount Myōboku outsiders is a role performed by Uchiha Naruto. Naruto admits that the characterization is particularly difficult: he improvises Jiraiya’s theatrical introduction after copying a televised kabuki performance with the Sharingan. The persona’s explanation that the outsiders naturally awakened “spiritual power” is also staged; their chakra was bestowed when they entered the Mount Myōboku instance 204 209.
By the Sapporo battle, Jiraiya is a Servant created through Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. Such Servants possess independent personalities and consciousnesses, but their memories are fabricated. Naruto can direct them behind the scenes, although he generally allows Jiraiya to improvise after establishing his character and restricting certain words and actions. Jiraiya does not know that Naruto controls him 262 321.
Within that constructed history, Jiraiya trained under Sarutobi Sasuke, the God of Shinobi, alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. The three were called the Sannin until Orochimaru betrayed their teacher. Jiraiya subsequently abandoned that title in favor of “Toad Sage of Mount Myōboku” 261.
Appearance
- Build and hair: Tall and burly, with long gray-white or silver hair that doubles as a weapon 203 204.
- Clothing: Wears wooden clogs and clothing combining kabuki and samurai styles 259 308.
- Early appearance: Has a knobby, bulbous nose, which he attributes to a training mishap 203 211.
- Sage Mode: Develops red facial markings, a bumpy nose, horizontally elongated pupils, webbed fingers, and lengthened feet 321 322 439.
- Enhanced Sage Mode: Bears two toad sages on his shoulders 439.
Personality
Jiraiya is flamboyant, boastful, and determined to make an impressive entrance. He introduces himself through kabuki-style singing, dancing, and poses, even while standing on a giant combat toad. His performance can collapse into comedy, as when Gamahiro’s movement sends him stumbling onto his backside during his Sapporo introduction 203 204 259.
His lechery is overt. He harasses Mineko Yuki, shows little patience for men seeking instruction, and favors female disciples. Superintendent Shimono persuades him to consider visiting Tokyo only after promising to book all of Kabukicho for him 204 209 261 330.
Despite his frivolity and occasional intimidating displays, Jiraiya repeatedly protects ordinary people. Mineko comes to regard him as easygoing and compassionate. When resurrected against his will, he warns Senmon about his attacks, explains his own equipment’s weaknesses, and celebrates Senmon’s success in stopping him 208 210 439 440.
He is also a perceptive combatant. After a brief exchange with Tobi, he deduces that Kamui’s intangibility must end when its user attacks and questions how long it can be maintained 322.
Abilities & Skills
Sage Mode
Jiraiya absorbs natural energy to create senjutsu chakra, enhancing his strength, defenses, ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu 321 322.
- Preparation: His Asakusa transformation takes several minutes, creating an opening an opponent could exploit 321.
- Physical enhancement: Gains enough strength to pressure Tobi in close combat and later shear through a wooden dragon with the Uchiha Gunbai 322 440.
- Endurance limit: Repeated senjutsu exhausts him, forcing him out of Sage Mode during the Asakusa battle 323.
- Toad-sage assistance: The two sages on his shoulders enable a more perfect state and cooperative techniques 439 440.
Fire Style
Fire Style is the strongest part of Naruto’s reproduction of Jiraiya, reaching LV4 321.
| Technique | Applications and limits |
|---|---|
| Great Fireball Technique | Demonstrates a fireball over five meters across while teaching Mineko; uses its direct destructive force against stone guardians 209 210. |
| Phoenix Flower Jutsu | Bombards multiple targets with smaller fireballs powerful enough to strike like artillery shells 210. |
| Flame Bullet | Uses oil refined from chakra to make burning material cling to targets; less effective against inorganic stone statues than Great Fireball 210. |
| Fire Dragon Flame Bullet | Blasts apart the Giant Toad Stone Statue’s head, though the creature regenerates 210. |
| Toad Oil Flame Bullet | Combines his flames with Gamahiro’s torrent of toad oil 259. |
| True Fire of Samadhi | Produces golden flames that engulf Tobi’s enormous fire serpent; can nevertheless be reflected by the Uchiha Gunbai 319 322. |
Earth Release
- Swamp of the Underworld: Creates an extensive swamp that swallows Orochimaru’s giant pythons while preserving safe ground around the outsiders. Later immobilizes the regenerating Giant Toad Stone Statue 208 210.
- Earth-Style Wall: Raises an earthen defense that withstands highly corrosive snake venom 208.
- Earth Flow River: Moves the ground beneath the outsiders to transport them rapidly to the Toad Oil Waterfall 210.
- Underground movement: Escapes beneath the battlefield and reemerges to resume fighting Tobi 321.
Hair Manipulation
Jiraiya controls the length, shape, and hardness of his hair for restraint, rescue, and attack 204 208 322.
- Wild Lion’s Mane Technique: Extends his hair around a giant python and strangles it in under ten seconds 204.
- Rescue and detection: Retrieves people from danger and pulls the concealed Orochimaru from the bushes 206 208.
- Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon: Fires hardened strands without hand seals or a windup. Described as his fastest, widest-ranging attack 322.
- Limits: Orochimaru’s wind blade can sever the extended hair, while Tobi’s intangibility lets Hair Needle Senbon pass through harmlessly 208 322.
Rasengan
- Rasengan: Uses a spiraling chakra sphere in close combat, including to interrupt Tobi’s attack on helicopters and distant snipers 322.
- Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan: Creates a sphere over five meters across, destroying Senso-ji and flattening the surrounding area. Its natural-energy component prevents the Uchiha Gunbai from reflecting it 322.
Toad Summoning and Cooperative Senjutsu
- Gamahiro: Provides giant-scale combat support and oil for combined fire attacks. Jiraiya dismisses him when Amaterasu begins consuming him 259 260.
- Gamabunta: Helps fight Princess Kaguya, cutting off one of her tails and joining the assault after she is restrained 308.
- Shop Toad: Conceals Jiraiya, Senmon, and the Amber Purifying Pot inside its belly before vanishing to escape Tobi 309.
- Sage Art: Goemon: Combines wind, toad oil, fire, and senjutsu into a wide-area wave of lethally superheated oil 439 440.
- Sage Art: Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant: The shoulder toads’ duet traps Senmon in an illusion that his Sharingan cannot break. White Fox Seimei must intervene to release him 440.
Sealing and Barriers
- Amaterasu containment: Uses a prepared scroll to seal the black flames spreading through Sapporo’s ruins 261.
- Amber Purifying Pot: Seals Princess Kaguya by calling her name and provoking her into answering 309.
- Four Red Yang Formation: Maintains the barrier alongside Tsunade, Chiriku, and Konohanasakuyahime. It seals space, prevents Kamui escape, and withstands Susanoo’s punches and Yasaka Magatama, but requires tremendous power from its four users 325.
- Scroll storage: Seals the coffin containing Tobi’s body inside a scroll 330.
Resurrected Body
The Ritual of the Lord of Mount Tai restores Jiraiya in an Impure World Reincarnation body 439.
- Advantages: Regenerates damaged body parts and supplies inexhaustible sage power 439.
- Reduced output: Cannot reproduce his full living strength 439.
- External control: Retains his awareness and speech but cannot stop his body from attacking; being struck triggers automatic retaliation 439.
- Lightning vulnerability: Kiba’s lightning disrupts his regeneration and ultimately immobilizes him 439 440.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heavy sword: Uses a gray greatsword against Orochimaru and later summons a heavy sword with a chain attached to its hilt for the fight against Tobi 207 322.
- Metal hand guard: Blocks a thrust from Orochimaru’s Kusanagi Sword 207.
- Amber Purifying Pot: Carries the large earthen-yellow vessel on his back before using it to imprison Princess Kaguya 308 309.
- Spirit pills: Supplies pills that restore Uchiha Senmon’s strength during the Mount Fuji battle 308.
- Scrolls and writing tools: Uses scrolls for weapon summoning, sealing, storage, and the Mount Myōboku summoning contract 261 322 330 331.
- Uchiha Gunbai: Acquires Tobi’s fan as spoils of war. It reflects release techniques but not physical attacks or senjutsu incorporating natural energy; it also functions as a durable melee weapon and shield 439 440.
Relationships
- Uchiha Naruto — Original impersonator and creator of the later Servant. Jiraiya is unaware that Naruto directs the conflict from behind the scenes 204 262 321.
- Mineko Yuki — Initially a rescued outsider receiving a few pointers; later formally accepted as his disciple. He arranges for her to train at Mount Myōboku 209 211 330 331.
- Uchiha Senmon — Informal student and ally. Jiraiya explicitly refuses to call him a disciple, but provides Sage Transformation instruction out of consideration for Konohanasakuyahime. After resurrection, he actively helps Senmon find a way to defeat him 331 439 440.
- Tsunade — Fellow former Sannin and ally against Orochimaru and the Akatsuki; rescues him in Sapporo 260 261.
- Orochimaru — Former companion turned enemy. Jiraiya rejects his recruitment offer and finally renounces their remaining bond over his crimes 207 261.
- Sarutobi Sasuke — Teacher within Jiraiya’s constructed history; Orochimaru’s betrayal and murder of their teacher fuel their hostility 207 261 262.
- Gamamaru — The Great Toad Sage whose prophetic guidance brings Jiraiya to Mount Fuji 308.
- Konohanasakuyahime — Treated with formal respect; her care for Mineko prompts Jiraiya to offer Senmon instruction in return 308 330.
- Tobi — Principal adversary over Princess Kaguya’s custody, though Jiraiya temporarily cooperates with him against her 308 309 319.
- Pain — Akatsuki leader who kills Jiraiya during his investigation 413 439.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mount Myōboku Incident
The initial Jiraiya persona saves seven stranded outsiders from a giant python and offers to guide them to the Toad Oil Waterfall. He refuses Orochimaru’s demand to surrender them as sacrifices, protects them during the ensuing battle, and teaches Mineko the Great Fireball Technique 204 207 208 209.
At the waterfall, he destroys enough Stone Toad Guardians to trigger their merger into the Giant Toad Stone Statue. Rather than permanently destroy the regenerating defense mechanism, he traps it in a swamp and sends the outsiders back to the present world with the World-Breaking Technique 210.
Sapporo Confrontation
Jiraiya arrives on Gamahiro to oppose Orochimaru and Itachi. Itachi states that fighting him would, at best, leave both sides seriously injured even with Orochimaru’s assistance. Tsunade joins Jiraiya, but Tobi intervenes and departs with the Akatsuki members before their conflict is settled 259 260 261.
Mount Fuji and Princess Kaguya
Following Gamamaru’s guidance, Jiraiya joins the fight against Princess Kaguya and temporarily sets aside his feud with Tobi. He seals her in the Amber Purifying Pot by provoking a response to her name, then escapes with Senmon and the artifact when Tobi demands it 308 309.
Government Audience and Asakusa Battle
Jiraiya briefs Japanese officials on the Inner World and the destruction of the Age of Gods, while acknowledging that his understanding comes from fragmentary ancient records. He links the Akatsuki’s pursuit of the Nine-Tails to that catastrophe and warns that Tobi is coming for Kaguya 312 314.
At Senso-ji, his confrontation with Tobi escalates through fire techniques, Sage Mode, Rasengan, and Susanoo, devastating the temple and surrounding district. Exhausted by repeated senjutsu, he helps turn the battle through the Four Red Yang Formation and later takes custody of Tobi’s body 319 321 322 323 325 329.
Three-Year Separation
Before vanishing into golden motes, Jiraiya accepts Mineko as a disciple and arranges Sage Transformation training for Senmon. He warns officials that the Akatsuki can manipulate mortals and that ancient sealed beings may awaken during the separation between worlds 330 331.
Senmon is subsequently reverse-summoned to Mount Myōboku once. Jiraiya avoids meeting him and sends a small toad with the secret Sage Transformation scroll instead; Senmon attributes the avoidance to his Uchiha surname and Sharingan 439.
Death and Forced Return
Sugawara no Michizane reports that Pain has killed Jiraiya. After being resurrected, Jiraiya confirms that he died investigating the Akatsuki leader and reveals that the Nine Tailed Beasts destroyed the Age of Gods and threaten the three realms again 413 439.
Forced to fight Senmon, he repeatedly warns him and exposes his own weaknesses. After White Fox Seimei breaks the toad sages’ genjutsu, Senmon drives Kiba into Jiraiya’s chest and immobilizes him with lightning. Jiraiya responds with delight and praises Senmon’s growth 439 440.
Notable Quotes
“Lord Jiraiya, the Toad Sage! That’s me!” 204
“What this sage likes best is telling people like you, no!” 323
“Senmon, run! Damn it, my body won’t listen to me.” 439
Trivia
- Professor Nagayama argues that Jiraiya inspired The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya and interprets his hairstyle and performance as evidence of an interest in kabuki. The narration instead reveals that Naruto copied the introductory routine from television 204 213.
- The Metropolitan Police Department makes The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya required reading for its Fourth Investigation Division while investigating the supernatural figures 213.
- Jiraiya’s boast that he is “not even a thousand years old yet” is part of his presented identity, not an established age for the Servant 262 314.
- Government footage publicly introduces the Toad Sage among the supernatural figures whose existence it confirms 335.
