Background / History

Ordinary life and the Matori Group

Tosu grew up without notable incident, attended an ordinary university, and became a salesman. He took pride in his marriage, his daughter, and the more than fifty mystery stories he had uploaded to a fiction website 183.

His life changed when he discovered bruises on Karei’s face. While secretly inspecting her apartment, he overheard her boyfriend—the Matori Group’s young master—boasting about murdering other women and threatening her family. The boyfriend discovered him, but slipped and fatally struck his head during their struggle. Fearing retaliation against his wife and daughter, Tosu dismembered and concealed the body 183.

The Matori Group abducted and tortured him, severing his hand, foot, and ear. Brother Kubo then struck his head with a shovel and had him buried alive in Aokigahara. Black tendrils animated his severed hand and dug him free, beginning his transformation into a Superhuman 183 184.

Escape from Aokigahara

Tosu reattached his missing body parts and struggled through the forest in a Kamen Rider costume. Despite his new abilities, blood loss, hunger, and his initially poor stamina left him close to collapse. He survived by gathering berries and catching fish with his tendrils 184 185 187.

A white-haired monster addressed him as “Lord Bishop.” Tosu subsequently lost control of his body and was swallowed by a monster, remaining conscious throughout the ordeal. He associated an Osaka-accented voice with Mr. Moribe, a man he had encountered in Aokigahara 187 189.

Uchiha Naruto arranged for Tosu to be left beside a road outside the forest. Tosu mistakenly credited Moribe with saving him, then hitched a ride in a pickup truck to Shizuoka, where he discovered that Yakuza were watching his home 191.

Rescue and separation

Tosu confronted Kubo and freed his wife and daughter, but refused to kill the gangsters. Kubo exploited that mercy and shot him through the heart. An entity within Tosu offered another chance at life; Tosu then killed Kubo and replaced his ruined heart with Kubo’s 193 194 195 196.

His family’s terror at the bloody transformation convinced him that he could no longer remain at home. Although Karei begged him to stay, he denied being her father and fled. He interrogated a surviving Yakuza, attacked the Matori Group’s headquarters, and killed its boss and numerous members, effectively destroying the organization 197.

Unwilling to kill police officers to escape, Tosu instead created a Kamen Rider double and disguised himself with a dead gangster’s face. He left for Osaka to deliver Mr. Moribe’s letter to his daughter 197 198.

Osaka and police recruitment

On the Shinkansen, Tosu knocked out a knife-wielding arsonist, but passengers filmed him and jeopardized his disguise. In Osaka, he searched for Moribe Mamiya, eventually tracing her to the club where she worked under the name Mako 199 235.

After Mamiya was critically injured, Tosu obtained money from local Yakuza for her treatment. The confrontation ended in further killings and a fire, leaving him convinced that he had taken more than twenty lives. At Osaka General Hospital, he gave Reiko the money while struggling with guilt and thoughts of suicide 239 240.

Uchiha Senmon approached him with an offer of cooperation rather than arrest. Senmon secured the arrest of Mamiya’s attacker, promised to seek Doctor Satomi’s help, and arranged a stop in Shizuoka so Tosu could see his family before traveling to Tokyo. Tosu initially resisted out of shame over his mutations, but accepted after Senmon reassured him. He also surrendered his human-skin mask for research 240 241.

Mount Fuji and Moon City

During the evacuation from Mount Fuji, Tosu carried Prince Fumihito at Senmon’s order. When a fused spider-and-centipede monster trapped the squad, he accepted Jashin’s bargain and gained a chakra-draining tongue. He concealed the renewed contact with Jashin and the circumstances of his new power from Senmon 292 293.

Tobi transported Tosu and Senmon with Kamui. Hyuga Miko later identified them as human pillars selected for Princess Kaguya’s attempt to break her seal. Tosu subsequently fell into a golden-bubble genjutsu, was freed by Kabuto Yakushi, and traveled with the group into Moon City. Senmon later pulled him and Mineko Yuki out of Kaguya’s body 293 296 299 307.

Twelve Divine Generals

Tosu became a branch director and one of the Twelve Divine Generals, but remained unhappy with the government’s distrust and its failure to cure Mamiya. He secretly joined Taka and hoped that Jeanne’s angelic powers might succeed where the government had failed 395 396.

Alongside Mineko, he helped restrain Taira no Masakado and his Shadow Warriors. Set’s subsequent attack destroyed his lower body, but his clones restored two hearts and enabled him to survive 406 407.

Afterward, Abe no Seimei marked him with red light. In Tosu’s inner abyss, Jashin urged him to steal his colleagues’ hearts, then attempted to seize his body. Scarlet, three-tomoe Sharingan appeared as the entity dragged him downward 410.

Kobe death game and Hiruko’s emergence

Tosu briefed government officials on the Kobe death game’s barrier, summoned supernatural souls, and elimination conditions. He then recruited Teruzo Kurogane, whose Heroic Spirit was Might Guy. An ambush by Taiseki cost Tosu a heart, but he survived, restrained the attacker, and attempted negotiation before the attackers escaped 424 425 426.

During the battle beneath Rashomon, Hidan used Tosu’s blood to transmit self-inflicted wounds to him, apparently exhausting his four lives. A concealed Lightning Release clone immobilized Hidan, and Tosu rose with five hearts and maximum-level Earth Grudge Fear. Afterward, he rejected Hidan’s fanaticism and knocked off his head 441 443.

The entity within Tosu eventually revealed itself as God Hiruko, seized Sasuke Uchiha, and emerged from Tosu’s mouth as a mass of black tendrils. Declaring Tosu useless, it discarded his body. Uchiha Itachi subsequently sealed Hiruko with the Totsuka Blade 448.

Appearance

  • Original physique: Thin, frail, and poorly conditioned from a sedentary office-worker lifestyle 183 187.
  • Black sutures: Conspicuous tendril stitching surrounds his left wrist, right ear, forehead, and other repaired wounds; later, his exposed body is described as covered in stitches 185 191 406.
  • Internal tendrils: Black strands fill his body and can emerge through wounds, his collar, or even his nose 187 406.
  • Disguised appearance: Using a stolen face and bodily adjustments, he passes for a sturdy young man under thirty rather than a forty-seven-year-old salesman 199.
  • Kamen Rider identity: Frequently conceals his face and mutations beneath a helmet and tokusatsu costume 191 193.

Personality

Tosu’s strongest motivation is protecting his wife and daughter. He endures torture without revealing the young master’s death, accepts monstrous powers to keep living for them, and leaves home partly because he fears those powers could eventually harm them 183 195 198.

Initially timid and softhearted, he cannot bring himself to execute even the men who tortured him. Kubo recognizes both his indecision and his family attachment as weaknesses. After Kubo’s betrayal, Tosu becomes capable of ruthless violence against the Matori Group, but does not lose his moral reservations 194 195 197.

He repeatedly questions whether stealing hearts and faces has made him inhuman. His vow never to kill again proves difficult to uphold, and subsequent bloodshed brings severe guilt rather than satisfaction. Hidan becomes a warning of what he fears becoming: someone who uses supernatural power to indulge cruelty without restraint 198 235 240 443.

His secret allegiance to Taka does not mean he is willing to murder his comrades. When Jashin proposes taking the Twelve Divine Generals’ hearts, Tosu is appalled—especially at the thought of betraying Senmon, whom he credits with rescuing him from despair 410.

Abilities & Skills

Earth Grudge Fear

A body-altering technique whose black tendrils repair injuries, manipulate severed limbs, and incorporate stolen hearts 184 196 406.

  • Repair: Reattaches severed body parts and stitches wounds closed. Early repairs are painful, and reattached limbs can fall off unless sutured securely 184 185.
  • Offense and restraint: Launches fists, binds enemies, extracts hearts, and eventually pierces metal and stone 185 194 196 197.
  • Physical enhancement: Connects with muscles and blood vessels to provide superhuman strength and speed 197.
  • Additional lives: Replacement hearts let him survive otherwise fatal injuries; at maximum level, he can hold five hearts 426 441 443.
  • Ability acquisition: Hearts from supernatural beings can supply their chakra natures or related powers. Ordinary human hearts provide extra lives but do not increase his strength 406.
  • Limits: Hearts can be destroyed, and powerful opponents can sever his tendrils. His supernatural durability does not make him invulnerable 406 426 441.

Earth Grudge Fear Clones

Heart-powered bodies made from intertwined black tendrils 198 406.

  • Creates a double to divert police attention; this early version cannot move far from his main body 198.
  • Later deploys three combat clones using Lightning Release, Wind Release, Fire Style, and binding tendrils 406.
  • Uses Lightning Release: False Darkness through a hidden clone to immobilize Hidan 441.
  • Clones can return to his body and restore hearts, but losing their hearts destroys them 407 441.

Vanishing Facial Copy Technique

Removes another person’s facial skin and grafts it onto his own face through his tendrils 198 199.

  • Combines the mask with changes to height and build for a convincing alternate identity 199.
  • The graft fits closely enough that visual inspection alone does not expose it; touching it can reveal the disguise 199.
  • Requires an actual acquired face. While hiding in Osaka, he has only one available and supplements it with a cap and glasses 235.

Chaos of the Demonic Realm

One of the sinister techniques attributed to Jashin, associated with stealing vital essence 410.

  • His documented chakra-draining manifestation is a pale tongue covered in fanged mouths that passes through a monster’s body and drains its chakra 292.
  • Weakens the fused insect monster’s web sufficiently to help him escape restraint 292.
  • Its acquisition requires a bargain granting Jashin one hour of bodily control when demanded 292.

Investigation and Field Resources

  • Mystery writing: Has written and uploaded more than fifty mystery stories 183.
  • Police resources: As a supernatural police official, can call upon officers, fire support, logistics, and medical assistance 426 427.
  • Participant detection: A Cursed Seal on the back of his right hand burns when he encounters Teruzo Kurogane, confirming his suspicion that the student is involved in the Kobe ritual 425.
  • Combat limitation: Early in his transformation, overwhelming strength compensates for a lack of fighting experience; an ordinary Yakuza fighter briefly outmaneuvers him before he retaliates seriously 239.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kamen Rider costume and helmet — Conceals his identity and mutations; his later combat clones also wear Kamen Rider masks 191 441.
  • Cap and plain-lens glasses — Supplement his stolen-face disguise after his train rescue attracts attention 235.
  • Hachiman talisman — Passes it to Mineko during the Masakado battle; she uses it to dispel the Shadow Warriors 406.

  • Karei Tosu / Hua Ling / Reika — His daughter and the central reason he confronts the Matori Group. Despite her initial fear of his transformation, she begs him to remain with the family 183 197.
  • Mrs. Tosu — His wife; their previously happy marriage is shattered by the Matori Group’s retaliation and his transformation 183 197.
  • Uchiha Senmon — Recruits him, advocates for his humanity, and repeatedly fights beside him. Tosu remains grateful even after secretly joining a potentially opposing organization 240 241 293 396.
  • Mr. Moribe — Tosu believes he helped save him in Aokigahara. Gratitude leads Tosu to deliver his letter and attempt to protect his family 191 197 240.
  • Moribe Mamiya — The intended recipient of Moribe’s letter. Tosu funds her treatment and continues seeking a cure years later 240 395.
  • Mineko Yuki — Fellow Divine General and combat partner against Masakado and Hidan 406 441.
  • Jashin / God Hiruko — The inner entity Tosu regards with both gratitude and fear. It bargains for control, urges him to harvest his allies’ hearts, and ultimately emerges as Hiruko and discards him 292 410 448.
  • Uchiha Naruto — Secretly refers to himself as Tosu’s “Jashin” and views him as a talented, useful pawn; also arranges his escape from Aokigahara 191 200.
  • Teruzo Kurogane / Might Guy — Recruits Kurogane and cooperates with his Heroic Spirit during the Kobe crisis 425 426.
  • Hidan — An opponent whose blood curse threatens Tosu’s multiple hearts and whose fanaticism embodies Tosu’s fear of moral collapse 441 443.
