Amid the detection shell's increasingly frequent "meows," Xie Wen and the others piloted the Toot Toot Forward and soon found the toxin conglomerate Smiley resting in the ruins of an area on the island where an enormous explosion had clearly occurred. Poison mist periodically escaped its body with its breathing.
Apparently, Smiley had made its lair in the place where Caesar had detonated the poison gas bomb-its own original body.
Although it was a conglomerate of purple poison gas, the monster was essentially a sticky, flabby red liquid. In appearance, it certainly suited the name "Smiley," a variation on "slime."
Since Caesar had given Smiley the power of the Salamander Fruit, a few axolotl traits were still visible on its body, most noticeably the six "horns" protruding from either side of its head.

When Xie Wen and the others found Smiley, it also spotted the Toot Toot Forward, an "uninvited guest." Having ruled this island for nearly a year, it immediately roared at the ship.
Although Smiley lorded over the island, it was not without opponents. A huge red dragon also lived there, a monster Vegapunk had created that could survive in any environment. Smiley's toxins had no effect on the dragon, while the dragon could not kill Smiley, whose actual body was a mass of toxins.
So, upon seeing the Toot Toot Forward, whose appearance bore a slight resemblance to the dragon, Smiley, whose
