Background / History
Lupin attended Hogwarts as a Gryffindor and became a prefect. Gerald recalls that his appointment reflected both his excellent grades and Dumbledore’s wish to give a werewolf student dignity and recognition. He belonged to the Marauders, was close to James Potter, and helped create the Marauder’s Map. Peter Pettigrew originally learned to become a rat to keep Lupin company 53 73 74.
After James and Lily Potter died, Lupin believed Sirius Black had betrayed them and Peter had died a hero. Discrimination against werewolves left him unable to secure stable work; he survived through odd jobs and help from friends, without a fixed home 52 53 74.
When Gerald encountered him during the Christmas holiday, Lupin’s wand was broken into two pieces. He could neither open the entrance to Diagon Alley himself nor afford Ollivander’s ten-Galleon repair fee. Gerald later found him sheltering from the rain in an alley 52 53 59.
Appearance
- Face and expression: Pale, exhausted features, tightly pressed lips, and a weary, wary gaze at his first meetings with Gerald 52 60.
- Eyes: Described as tired brown eyes during their conversation in Diagon Alley 53.
- Clothing: An old, patched coat; later, a cloak wrapped around him from head to toe when meeting Gerald in Hogsmeade 52 53 67.
- Improved condition: By May, he looks much healthier and wears a light brown shirt faded from washing, with its sleeves rolled to his elbows 108.
Personality
Lupin is gentle, courteous, and proud. Gerald chooses paid tutoring rather than a direct gift because he believes Lupin would refuse charity from a child. Lupin’s relief after assessing Gerald’s abilities comes partly from realizing that his new student genuinely needs instruction rather than merely feeling sorry for him 53 59 61.
He is the calmest of the Marauders: steadier than James, more rational than Sirius, and accustomed to concealing his feelings beneath a smile. Nevertheless, Chris Horton’s death brings him close to tears, particularly because Horton ignored his warning about the danger 93.
His restraint persists even when confronting betrayal. Although he despises Peter after learning the truth, he insists on keeping him alive to testify and clear Sirius’s name. He also worries that Gerald’s exceptional power could become dangerous if the boy follows a destructive path 74 75.
As a teacher, Lupin is patient and adaptable. He corrects specific problems in movement and pronunciation, praises self-correction, and abandons his planned basic curriculum once Gerald demonstrates that he needs practical combat instruction instead 61 68.
Abilities & Skills
Defence Against Dark Magic Instruction
Lupin assesses Gerald’s existing spells before choosing material appropriate to his ability. His lessons combine precise demonstrations with supervised practice and increasingly advanced combat magic 61 67 68.
| Spell Taught | Chapter | Teaching Details |
|---|---|---|
| Impervius — Water and Fire Imperviousness | 61 | Explains the incantation, wand movement, and waterproof, fire-resistant coating; Gerald succeeds within four or five attempts. |
| Protego — Shield Charm | 67 68 | Demonstrates the barrier, corrects wrist movement and pronunciation, and recommends practice until casting becomes muscle memory. |
| Confringo — Blasting Curse | 78 | Teaches Gerald an offensive spell, then emphasizes controlling its destructive force after a practice blast nearly sends debris into him. |
| Reducto — Reductor Curse | 108 | Emphasizes a short, forceful gesture without unnecessary movement; Gerald achieves the basic effect after three attempts. |
- Recognizes that Gerald’s problem is often excessive magical power rather than difficulty learning spells 67 78.
- Offers practical combat training instead of continuing with elementary material 68.
- Provides field guidance on magical creatures, identifying an Erumpent’s eyes as its weak point while allowing Gerald to fight it himself 93.
Defensive and Restraining Magic
- Protego: His shield deflects Gerald’s powerful Diffindo blades, which then cut through the cottage wall 67.
- Freezing Charm: Spreads intense cold and frost across the ground, slowing the fleeing Scabbers enough for Gerald to stun him 73.
- Incarcerous: Binds Gerald in an attempt to stop him beating Peter to death; Gerald subsequently breaks free through physical strength 74.
- Petrificus Totalus: Uses the Full Body-Bind Curse when Helena Perry attacks 94.
- Animagus reversal: Forces Peter out of his rat form with a revealing spell 74.
Elemental and Nonverbal Combat Magic
Lupin’s duel with Helena demonstrates rapid nonverbal casting and large-scale manipulation of fire and water 94 96.
- Shapes flames into a large tiger to meet Helena’s attacking firebird 96.
- Summons rain to extinguish the Fiendfyre burning the forest 96.
- Raises standing water into a spinning defensive curtain that redirects Helena’s water arrows 96.
- Exploits the opening created by Gerald’s lightning to land several spells on Helena before she escapes 96.
- Limit: Helena’s magical mastery exceeds his own. Lupin acknowledges that he would likely have lost without Gerald’s help 97.
Repair and Healing Magic
- Reparo: Repairs the wall damaged during Gerald’s Shield Charm lesson and broken branches after a blasting exercise 67 78.
- Basic Healing Charm: Treats Peter’s external injuries to keep him alive for trial, rather than out of sympathy 75.
Lycanthropy and Magical Limitations
- His werewolf condition is a major source of employment discrimination and personal distress 53 71.
- Dumbledore trusts that Lupin will not willingly harm anyone and proposes that Snape brew Wolfsbane Potion for him; Snape refuses in that conversation 71.
- At their first meeting, Gerald concludes that Lupin cannot perform wandless Apparition; his broken wand also leaves him unable to open the Diagon Alley entrance 52 53.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wand: Initially broken in two. After receiving Gerald’s tuition advance, Lupin returns with an old wand that Gerald concludes has been repaired rather than replaced 53 60 61.
- Extended backpack: Enchanted with an Undetectable Extension Charm; contains the blanket used to wrap Chris Horton’s body 94.
- Spellbook: An old, yellowed volume with dog-eared pages, used for Gerald’s Reducto lesson 108.
- Lightness Talisman: Temporarily supplied by Gerald during the fight with Helena, making Lupin feel lighter and noticeably increasing his reaction speed 94.
Relationships
- Gerald Green / Gerard Green — Student and ally. Gerald gives him paid work, helps him expose Peter, and assists him against Helena. Lupin protects Gerald while reporting Peter’s capture; Gerald later declares that Lupin will always be his teacher 60 76 96 108.
- James Potter and Lily Evans Potter — Dear friends whose deaths deeply affect him. Lupin remembers Lily as arguably the most talented wizard in their year 52 59 91.
- Sirius Black — Fellow Marauder and friend. Lupin initially believes him guilty, then insists that Peter survive to clear his name. After Sirius’s release, Lupin hosts him and tries to temper his defiance over access to Harry 74 79 80.
- Peter Pettigrew — Former friend and fellow Marauder. Lupin mourned his supposed death, but repudiates him after discovering his betrayal of the Potters 74 76.
- Albus Dumbledore — Trusted supporter. Dumbledore defended his place at Hogwarts and continues to vouch for his character; Lupin turns to him after Peter’s capture 53 71 75.
- Severus Snape — Long-standing adversary from school. Peter’s exposure temporarily makes their old hostility seem less important to Lupin, who approaches Snape peacefully for help contacting Dumbledore 60 71 75.
- Chris Horton — Acquaintance whose dangerous pursuit of Paracelsus’s secrets Lupin tries to discourage. Lupin buries him and returns to Britain to fulfill his final request 90 93 94 98.
- Helena Perry — Former schoolmate and later opponent. Lupin recalls her exceptional talent, then fights her when she demands Horton’s possessions 91 94.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Becoming Gerald’s Teacher
Gerald offers Lupin private teaching work and twenty-odd Galleons in advance, presenting the arrangement as an exchange between a student who needs instruction and a wizard who needs employment. Lupin accepts and begins lessons that evening at the Leaky Cauldron 60 61.
He subsequently settles in a modest rented cottage near Hogsmeade and sends Gerald directions through Hogwarts’s secret passages. Their lessons move toward practical defence and combat, while Gerald also sends him food from the Hogwarts kitchens 66 67 68.
Exposing Peter Pettigrew
Lupin helps Gerald catch Scabbers, then sees the Marauder’s Map identify the rat as Peter Pettigrew. He reverses Peter’s transformation and learns that Peter betrayed the Potters and framed Sirius 73 74.
He tries to stop Gerald’s revenge attack, treats Peter’s injuries, and reports the capture to Dumbledore. His account omits Gerald’s stunning of two Hogwarts students and the use of the Marauder’s Map. Dumbledore leaves Peter in his custody while awaiting the Ministry 74 75 76 77.
The investigation and trial reduce Lupin’s availability for teaching during January. Peter is eventually imprisoned and Sirius cleared 78 79.
Albanian Forest Expedition
Lupin accompanies Gerald’s search for Nagini while providing real-combat training. They encounter wizards pursuing Paracelsus’s laboratory, and Gerald warns him that Helena may be using the treasure seekers as expendable scouts 91 92 93.
After Horton dies, Lupin buries him beneath a fir tree. Helena attacks over the possessions Horton carried, and Lupin fights her with Gerald’s assistance. Gerald’s lightning breaks her shield, allowing Lupin to wound her before she Apparates away 94 96.
Lupin follows Gerald when the boy pursues the nearby python, but arrives after Nagini has been subdued. Gerald claims only to have driven off a snake, leaving Lupin unaware of the Beast-Taming Ring contract. They return to London, where Lupin departs to handle Horton’s final request 97 98.
Continuing Mentorship
Lupin advises Gerald to consult Hagrid about caring for his Thunderbird Egg. Later, after teaching Reducto, he predicts that he may have nothing left to teach Gerald within a year; Gerald answers that their teacher–student bond will remain 102 108.
When Cedric is abducted, Gerald chooses Dumbledore rather than involving Lupin in a rescue against two opponents of unknown strength, unwilling to risk his teacher’s life 113.
