Background / History
Harry is the son of James and Lily. According to Hagrid, he defeated You-Know-Who shortly after birth, becoming a figure of enormous importance to the wizarding world. Hagrid claims that ninety-nine percent of wizards know Harry and place great hopes in him; Brian worries about the burden this puts on an eleven-year-old 6.
Before attending Hogwarts, Harry lived with his aunt and uncle. During a visit to a zoo, he communicated with a boa constrictor and made its enclosure’s glass disappear. He later fears that discovery of his involvement might jeopardize his schooling and force him to return to his relatives 42.
At Hogwarts, Professor McGonagall discovered Harry’s suitability as Gryffindor’s Seeker. Despite being a first-year, he became the youngest Quidditch Seeker in a century. On Halloween, he, Ron, and Hermione defeated a mountain troll using the Levitation Charm; Hagrid also recounts Harry’s daring ride on the creature, which stood over four meters tall 6 11.
Appearance
Harry is a small, skinny, bespectacled boy, described as approximately 1.4 meters tall 6.
- Hair: Black 41.
- Eyes: Emerald green 42.
- Build: Much smaller than the burly Slytherin captain, Marcus Flint 49.
Personality
Harry is brave and hardworking, but keenly concerned about disappointing others. After Brian reassures him that he need not blame himself for his teammates’ risky efforts to help him, Harry responds that he will do his best not to let everyone down. Before his first match, anxiety about losing—and giving Malfoy something to mock—distracts him from his homework 7 41.
He is willing to challenge unfair accusations and defend people he trusts. He intervenes when Wood blames Brian for an explosion, questions Hermione’s unsupported suspicion that Brian is lying, and condemns Malfoy’s bullying of Neville. He also agrees with Hermione that Snape’s unreasonable behavior should not determine whether they study, since their marks remain their own responsibility 7 41 43.
Hogwarts matters deeply to Harry. When his friends react fearfully to his ability to speak to snakes, his immediate concern is expulsion rather than the ability itself. Brian’s reassurance visibly lifts his spirits 42 43.
