Chet Brian joined Hogwarts as a librarian, found a mysterious book and wand, and began learning magic while protecting students and befriending Hagrid. After healing a dying Acromantula, he learned that a wizard seeking the Philosopher's Stone and a Unicorn had attacked the spiders.

• Chet Brian met Dumbledore after stopping Neo Lester’s spell, and Dumbledore brought him to Hogwarts instead of sending him to Azkaban.
• Madam Pomfrey discovered Brian’s immense magical concentration and saw him absorb the force afflicting Lester, while Dumbledore hired Brian to help in the library.
• Brian stopped a Bludger from striking Angelina and later found a hidden wand and a mysterious book at Diagon Alley.
• Brian copied the book’s Ancient Runes, and Professor Babbling identified them as a powerful healing spell that ancient magic concealed from the unworthy.
• After the book’s magic flooded him with knowledge, Brian practiced spells and stood up for Neville when Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle bullied him.
• Brian traded his Flying Car to the Giant Squid for a glowing stone fragment, then repaired Hagrid’s Monster Books and followed him into the Forbidden Forest.
• Brian and Hagrid found Aragog’s Acromantulas dead or dying, and Brian learned a powerful wizard had attacked them while seeking the Philosopher’s Stone and a Unicorn.
• Brian cast his ancient Healing Magic on One Hundred Eighty-Eight, reviving the spider and the seeds growing on its body.

Brian investigated the basilisk and the Chamber of Secrets, uncovering its entrance and discovering that Harry could speak Parseltongue. He left the Chamber sealed and began work in the library, where the Gryffindor Quidditch match began and Harry’s broom suddenly bucked violently.

• Brian won Number One Hundred and Eighty-Eight’s help, learned more about Hagrid’s past, and met Moaning Myrtle, who described her death and promised to tell him about her killer.
• Brian consulted Professor Kettleburn and Professor Sprout, identified the Hogwarts monster as a basilisk, and told Dumbledore that Voldemort was likely seeking the Philosopher’s Stone.
• Brian and Dumbledore found the snake-engraved faucet in Myrtle’s bathroom, followed the pipe into the Chamber’s cavern, and discovered its sealed stone door.
• Brian used Ancient Sealing Magic to twist the stone snakes together, permanently sealing the Chamber and leaving the basilisk expedition—and clearing Hagrid’s name—out of reach.
• Harry spoke Parseltongue to Brian’s alchemical snake, and Brian brought him to Dumbledore before warning Ron and Hermione to keep the discovery secret.
• Brian started working in the library, quieted students with Hagrid’s toffee, and studied whether Ancient Magic could let him use nonverbal spells alongside other magic.
