Harry could not accept Hermione's criticism at all.
If this had been their first year, especially the first half of it, Harry would have had no choice but to swallow it when Hermione said that.
But what about afterward?
Afterward, Hermione had broken school rules no less often than Harry and the others. In fact, on several occasions, Hermione had been the mastermind!
For instance, last school year, they had used Polyjuice Potion to turn into Crabbe and Goyle and gone to the Slytherin Common Room to trick Draco. Hermione had planned that single-handedly.
Faced with Harry's challenge, Hermione was momentarily at a loss for words.
It seemed, perhaps, probably, that really was the case.
So Hermione lowered her voice a little, though she still sounded somewhat unconvinced. "But, Harry, you really have, really have run into far too many dangerous and abnormal things."
"You make it sound as though I wanted that. I didn't want it either." Harry certainly could not press Hermione too hard on this topic. After all, once school started, there would be plenty of occasions when he needed her help.
So Harry could only spread his hands helplessly and say, with no small amount of complaint:
"Haven't you been through all that rubbish with me? Tell me yourself, when did I ever go looking for trouble? Didn't all that rubbish come looking for me?"
The more Harry spoke, the more wronged he felt, because he realized this was not just a complaint, but the truth. He had originally wanted to behave himself and be a good student. Back then, he had even wanted to join Ravenclaw.
But not only had that blasted Sorting Hat put him in Gryffindor, where all the problem children gathered, all sorts of strange things kept turning up on his doorstep.
