Background

Eternity was born alongside the laws of the world, possessing immense power from his creation. As an abstract entity, his existence carries responsibilities tied to the world’s laws rather than the concerns of ordinary living beings 356 456.

The current Eternity is not the first individual to bear the name. The names of the Five Cosmic Entities function as designations, and several previous incarnations of Eternity were killed by First Firmament. This history makes the current incarnation particularly anxious about First Firmament’s return 442.

His multiversal existence extends through countless clones, with an Eternity present in almost every universe. These local manifestations are only small portions of the true Eternity 340.

Appearance

  • Multiversal form: A towering giant whose body appears filled with galaxies and countless stars. This form radiates much greater power than his manifestation within a single universe 341.
  • Human-sized form: Can shrink to the size of an ordinary person and adopt a human appearance when visiting Kamar-Taj 341 462.
  • Difficult to perceive: Wang Yang initially cannot clearly remember his appearance, but becomes able to see him as his own power increases. Mordo still struggles to make out Eternity’s features late in the story 146 277 489.

Personality

Eternity is approachable despite his intimidating status. He laughs with the Ancient One, praises Wang Yang’s potential, and reassures him that he does not casually attack others. His interest in Wang Yang develops from curiosity about a gifted disciple into respect for someone capable of threatening cosmic beings 146 225 230.

He is also proud, competitive, and sensitive about his standing. He initially conceals that he came specifically to observe Wang Yang, unwilling to admit how seriously he already regards the human sorcerer. Later, Wang Yang’s talent and destruction of his treasury gate leave him embarrassed and concerned about being surpassed 230 356 357.

His generosity has limits, especially where his collection is concerned. Although he honors his promise to reward Wang Yang, he repeatedly tries to steer him away from a particularly valuable sphere and resents the loss of his treasury door 358 359.

Eternity distinguishes divine existence from human morality, yet shows personal concern for others. He protects the fallen Celestials’ souls and warns the Ancient One that Wang Yang’s growing power could become dangerous if he loses his humanity. Oblivion later mocks him for spending so much time with mortals that he no longer resembles a god 271 280 339 442.

His attitude toward immortality is ambivalent. He once describes endless existence as something he dislikes and dismisses the possibility of Wang Yang killing him; when First Firmament returns, however, he urgently seeks to avoid the fate of his predecessors 353 442.

Abilities & Skills

Abstract Existence and Survival

Eternity exists as a manifestation of a concept rather than an ordinary organism 340.

  • Possesses an effectively limitless lifespan and is described as especially strong in survival, even compared with the other Cosmic Entities 271 359.
  • Has an energy-based body. Wang Yang’s destructive lightning causes him severe pain without necessarily inflicting tangible bodily injury 271.
  • Is not absolutely beyond death: previous Eternities have been killed, and the Cosmic Entities have experienced death and resurrection 442 465.

Clones and Avatars

His countless manifestations allow him to operate throughout the Multiverse 340 462.

  • Maintains clones in almost every individual universe 340.
  • Can exchange places with an avatar to reach its universe 462.
  • Uses his connection to his clones as navigational markers in the otherwise difficult-to-chart Multiverse 341.
  • Explains that clones at this level develop individual wills, though most remain subject to restrictions imposed by their true forms 340.

Spatial and Temporal Travel

Eternity can traverse universes and dimensional space with little visible effort 266 346 465.

  • Merges into space and appears in another universe while following the Celestials’ distress signal 266.
  • Crosses vast multiversal distances alongside Infinity by moving through space as though it were folded 346.
  • Recognizes Wang Yang despite his displacement across multiverses and time, then helps return him from the Realm of Space-Time Chaos 386 389.
  • Can appear elsewhere in the Multiverse with a thought 465.

Planetary Reconstruction

Eternity reconstructs destroyed planets by drawing on information retained within the universe and supplying divine power 277.

  • Distinguishes reconstruction of something that previously existed from genuine creation 277.
  • Demonstrates the technique by restoring a destroyed planet in the Solar System 277.
  • His demonstration allows Wang Yang to acquire his planet-forging talent and develop his own application of the knowledge 277 279.

Perception and Magical Knowledge

Eternity combines powerful mental perception with extensive knowledge of magic and cosmic laws 225 340 356.

  • Detects the concealed Watcher despite the latter’s technological camouflage 225.
  • Recognizes Oblivion’s origin power within Wang Yang’s lightning 231.
  • Remembers Wang Yang’s soul fluctuations well enough to identify his distant aura 461.
  • Senses God Glyph’s continued existence, although he cannot necessarily locate him precisely 461.
  • Can learn many kinds of magic with a glance 356.

Soul Preservation

Eternity can gather the soul-origin power of dead beings 271.

  • Collects the fallen Celestials’ souls before Death can claim them 271.
  • Refuses to surrender those souls because he considers the Celestials his subordinates and will not let them become Death’s playthings 271.

Limits and Relative Strength

Aspect Established limitation
Direct intervention Cosmic rules restrict how much he can interfere with multiversal developments. He cites these restrictions when recruiting Wang Yang against the King of Chaos and explaining Kang’s upheaval 340 386.
True-form presence Explains that his true form is too powerful to enter an ordinary universe safely; even a slight movement could collapse it 340.
Combat aptitude Does not specialize in combat. Later assessments place him toward the weaker end of the Five Cosmic Entities despite his exceptional survival abilities 359 461.
Oblivion connection Eternity and Oblivion are opposing sides whose powers affect one another. The King of Chaos’s destruction slightly weakens Eternity as well as diminishing Oblivion 353.
Knowledge Is neither omniscient nor omnipotent. He does not know the King of Chaos’s weaknesses and is surprised by changes in Wang Yang’s universe 341 462.
Exposure to powerful attacks Wang Yang’s lightning strikes him even within gaps in time, forcing him to dispel its lingering power and retreat 271.

Equipment & Possessions

  • Treasury: A collection accumulated during his travels and work maintaining multiversal balance. It is housed alongside Infinity’s treasury in the Place Where All Things Begin and End, the first space formed after the singularity’s explosion 340 355 356.
  • Beyonder-alloy gate: A treasury door made from a special alloy of the Beyonders. Wang Yang first damages it, then renders it completely unusable while testing his reward 357 358 359.
  • Transformable sphere — formerly owned: A treasure resembling, but explicitly inferior to, the Heart of the Universe. Mental power can shape it into different weapons; Wang Yang selects it as his reward. Neither Eternity nor Infinity fully understands its true purpose 358.
  • Potent liquor: Shares a drink with Wang Yang that can alter even his powerful internal energy. Eternity warns that a weak drinker could explode from consuming it 377.

Relationships

  • Wang Yang — Protégé-like acquaintance, ally, and frequent recruit for cosmic crises. Eternity initially considers accepting him as a disciple, later rewards his assistance, and eventually asks him to devour Oblivion with the other entities’ support 146 354 489.
  • Ancient One — Close associate and prospective multiversal traveling companion. He respects her decisions and privately warns her to protect Wang Yang’s humanity 146 230 280.
  • Infinity — Fellow Cosmic Entity and companion during the King of Chaos affair. She questions his judgment, later acknowledges Wang Yang’s power, and openly teases Eternity over his treasury losses 346 347 358.
  • Oblivion — Opposing counterpart and habitual rival. Their powers are connected, but their relationship is hostile; Oblivion’s eventual attempt to destroy the Multiverse makes him Eternity’s explicit target 225 353 442 489.
  • Death — Fellow Cosmic Entity with conflicting interests. Eternity’s preservation of the Celestials’ souls brings him into direct conflict with her desire to collect them 271.
  • Galactus — Fellow Cosmic Entity involved in the plan against God Glyph. Eternity investigates his death and recovers the ship containing the Ultimate Nullifier 465 466.
  • Celestials — Subordinates with longstanding ties to him. He considers mediating their conflict with Wang Yang, but withdraws support after learning that they intended to destroy Earth 266 271.
  • God Glyph — Eternity’s destructive dark side, born with the mission of destroying the Multiverse. His return prompts Eternity to seek Wang Yang’s help 456 462.
  • Church of Eternity — Worshippers who claim his authority. Their hostile actions against Kamar-Taj are not presented as his orders, and their “Eternity’s Afterimage” is an independently assembled energy entity rather than Eternity himself 375 377.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Visit to Kamar-Taj

Eternity visits the Ancient One and meets Wang Yang, who fears that the cosmic visitor might discover his secret. Eternity praises Wang Yang’s talent, judges him more impressive than Strange, and says he would consider taking him as a disciple if Wang Yang did not already have his own path. He leaves after accepting the Ancient One’s decision to postpone their journey 146.

Observing Wang Yang’s Power

After learning that Wang Yang has made Oblivion suffer a setback, Eternity comes to observe his fight with Mephisto. He detects a hidden Watcher and watches from the void, increasingly uncertain that he could easily subdue Wang Yang himself 225 230.

He accompanies Wang Yang into dimensional space and witnesses the destruction of Mephisto’s realm. The speed and severity of the destruction exceed what he expected even from Oblivion’s power 230 231.

Celestial Conflict and Solar System Restoration

Eternity answers a Celestial distress signal and discovers that the Celestials have provoked Wang Yang. He initially considers mediation, but abandons the attempt after learning that they intended to destroy Earth 266 271.

While watching the battle, he is struck by Wang Yang’s destructive lightning. He retreats, then returns to save the fallen Celestials’ souls from Death. Later, he demonstrates planetary reconstruction to help restore the Solar System, inadvertently giving Wang Yang another technique to learn. Before leaving, he warns the Ancient One about the danger of Wang Yang losing his humanity 271 277 279 280.

King of Chaos

Eternity recruits Wang Yang to eliminate an uncontrolled clone of Oblivion that has begun devouring universes. He offers treasure as payment, promises to watch over Earth, and warns that the Multiverse’s more complete laws may limit Wang Yang’s power 339 340.

His true form meets Wang Yang in the Multiverse and guides him to the King of Chaos. Eternity and Infinity observe the ensuing battle; despite Infinity’s doubts, Eternity continues to believe Wang Yang can win. Both are astonished when Wang Yang permanently strips the enemy of his essence 341 346 353.

Eternity subsequently takes Wang Yang to the treasuries. The reward visit costs him both a valuable sphere and his Beyonder-alloy gate, leaving him worried about Wang Yang’s ability to return uninvited 354 356 358 359.

Church of Eternity Conflict

The Church resents the Ancient One’s closeness to Eternity and moves against Kamar-Taj. Its ultimate weapon, Eternity’s Afterimage, is created through a secret art that gathers residual energy from Eternity’s descents; it is not a clone deliberately bestowed by him 365 375.

While the Afterimage attacks, the real Eternity drinks with Wang Yang on a distant rooftop. He praises Strange’s resistance, although Wang Yang describes the construct as possessing only one hundred-millionth of Eternity’s power. After Wang Yang intervenes, Eternity tells the arriving Ancient One that her disciple has already handled the crisis 377 378 379.

Kang and First Firmament

Eternity helps Wang Yang return from the Realm of Space-Time Chaos, but warns that Kang’s disruptions have become established events that Wang Yang must face himself. He later watches Earth alongside Oblivion as further threats gather 386 389 419.

Following Wang Yang’s clash with First Firmament’s will, Eternity joins the other Cosmic Entities to discuss the danger. Remembering the deaths of earlier Eternities, he urges caution while proudly citing his longstanding recognition of Wang Yang’s talent 442.

God Glyph and Galactus’s Death

Infighting involving Oblivion delays the Cosmic Entities’ response to God Glyph. Eternity later recruits Wang Yang to lure and hold God Glyph while the entities prepare to use the Ultimate Nullifier to reboot the Multiverse and erase him 457 462 463.

When Galactus fails to act, Eternity investigates and finds him dead, with the evidence—including traces in time—erased. He subsequently locates Galactus’s ancient spaceship and brings it back, relieved that the Ultimate Nullifier has not been taken 465 466.

Final Request Against Oblivion

Eternity returns to Kamar-Taj after identifying Oblivion as Galactus’s killer. He explains that Oblivion intends to use God Glyph to destroy the Multiverse and advance through its annihilation 489.

He asks Wang Yang to devour Oblivion completely, arguing that Earth cannot remain safe otherwise. To make the task possible, he promises that the remaining Cosmic Entities will suppress the weakened Oblivion and assist Wang Yang. The supplied passage ends with this proposal, not its outcome 489.
