Background / History

Arrival at Kamar-Taj

Before learning magic, Strange was a renowned doctor who had overcome numerous neurological conditions. A car accident left his hands trembling and unable to move with their former dexterity. He arrived at Kamar-Taj bedraggled, unsteady, and desperate for help 58 59.

Strange initially dismissed the Ancient One’s explanations of souls and spiritual worlds. She pushed his soul out of his body, then showed him other realms and the vastness of the Multiverse. He immediately asked to be taught. The Ancient One deliberately refused and left him waiting outside for a day before allowing him to enter, intending to temper his arrogance 58.

Training and Promotion

The Ancient One assigned Mordo and Wang Yang to teach Strange. Strange questioned Wang Yang’s youth until a magical chain left him unable to move. His early failures then made him blame his injured hands, while Wang Yang’s hands-free spellcasting challenged that explanation 57 59.

Once he learned to open Portals, Strange advanced quickly through basic and advanced spells. Nevertheless, Mordo’s repeated comparisons with Wang Yang made him underestimate his own exceptional progress. During his promotion trial, he impressed the assembled sorcerers with his close combat, Crimson Bands, and Vishanti Holy Sword. Mordo defeated him through superior experience but approved his advancement to Apprentice Mage 61 68 69 70.

Defending Kamar-Taj

During the Dark Elf invasion, Strange followed Mordo into battle and caught him after Malekith knocked him backward. He later confronted a Black Stone-enhanced Dark Elf, whose attack shattered his Rings of Raggadorr. After witnessing Wang Yang apparently disintegrate and transform into butterflies, Strange escaped the Mirror Dimension believing his teacher might have died 75 79.

Against the Black Order, a Kree suppression device prevented Strange and Wong from effectively using magic. Ebony Maw subsequently possessed Strange through a planted mental seed. Strange fought against the possession, while Wang Yang’s mental intervention prevented Maw from taking him down with him 165 167 168.

Wang Yang later entrusted Wanda’s magical education to Strange. When Chthon’s arrival destabilized her Chaos Magic, Strange stood between them and refused to surrender her despite the god’s pressure. Mordo and the other Masters joined him in defending Kamar-Taj 236.

Combat Experience and the Price of Magic

After several years of training, Strange requested a spar against a clone restricted to his own level of strength. He could not penetrate Wang Yang’s defenses even with combined spatial attacks and advanced spells. Wang Yang identified inadequate concentration and practical experience as his main weaknesses. Strange consequently began fighting across dimensions to protect Earth 334 335 338 339.

At the Sorcerers’ Assembly, Strange defeated Jeremy of the Church of Eternity. Wang Yang then noticed that the price of divine magic was damaging Strange’s senses. He brought Strange to the Vishanti and fought to secure an exemption. The Vishanti restored Strange’s senses and released him from their demands 370 372 373 375.

When the Church subsequently attacked Kamar-Taj, Strange confronted its manifestation of Eternity rather than leaving the defense to Wang Yang. His performance revealed to the other sorcerers how far he had advanced while overshadowed by his teacher 377 378.

Main Universe Counterpart

The Main Universe’s Strange is a separate individual whose different experiences have made him more mature and imposing. Unlike Strange in Wang Yang’s universe, he has already succeeded the Ancient One as Sorcerer Supreme. He initially treats Wang Yang cautiously, but welcomes him after recognizing his name and confirming that he is a fellow sorcerer 431 432.

His relationship with Mordo has deteriorated into conflict. Although he repeatedly defeated and spared his former teacher, Mordo continued using Black Magic to drain others’ magic and experiment on souls. After Mordo sacrificed Yota’s twenty million inhabitants, Strange resolved to stop letting their past friendship stay his hand and accompanied Wang Yang to confront him 432 438.

Strange was caught in a frozen-time barrier during the ensuing events. After killing Mordo, Wang Yang freed him and warned him about the First Firmament. Strange brought Wang Yang to the Illuminati to organize a response and later relayed the warning that roughly a hundred Dark Celestials were approaching Earth 443 446.

Following the Dark Celestials’ defeat, Strange opened Kamar-Taj’s library to Wang Yang and invited him to teach its sorcerers. His responsibilities as Sorcerer Supreme and a core member of both the Avengers and Illuminati leave him occupied with Earth’s factions and surrounding dimensional threats 454 455.

Appearance

  • On arrival: Stubbled face, unsteady steps, and trembling hands marked by surgery; his disheveled appearance resembles that of a homeless man 58 59.
  • As an established sorcerer: Wears sorcerer’s monk robes and later a red cloak. His hair begins graying while he is still in his thirties, a consequence of magic’s price 370 377.
  • Main Universe counterpart: Looks identical in basic appearance, but is more weathered and mature, with gray-streaked temples 431 432.

Personality

Strange begins as proud, skeptical, and accustomed to being the most capable person in his field. He distrusts Wang Yang’s qualifications because of his youth and struggles to accept phenomena outside his scientific understanding. Encountering Wang Yang’s abilities turns that confidence into repeated bouts of self-doubt 57 58 59 60.

Discouragement rarely stops him from working. After suffering backlash while attempting to borrow two gods’ powers simultaneously, he shows no resentment and trains harder. He also continues attacking during his hopeless spar with Wang Yang, earning praise for his persistence 62 338.

His sense of responsibility grows with his strength. He protects Wanda against Chthon, pursues real battles rather than remaining secluded, and takes the front line against the Church of Eternity’s attack 236 339 377.

The Main Universe counterpart combines a willingness to learn with unusually daring magical practice, including dealings with Demon Gods. His mercy toward Mordo ultimately gives way to a firm decision to prioritize Earth’s safety over personal attachment 432 438 439.

Abilities & Skills

Magical Learning and Instruction

Strange learns basic and advanced magic at an exceptional pace, though comparisons with Wang Yang obscure that talent 61 67.

  • Learns spells that even some veteran sorcerers and Masters cannot use within approximately a month 69.
  • Becomes capable of teaching Wanda and supervising her study of Chaos Magic 236.
  • Initially has difficulty controlling more than one borrowed divine power at a time; attempting two causes magical backlash 62.

Portals and Spatial Magic

Strange uses spatial spells for travel, battlefield manipulation, and attacks 99 338.

  • Portals: Opens routes between locations and uses them to reposition behind opponents 99 338.
  • Spatial cutting: Sends a contracting Portal toward Wang Yang as an offensive technique 338.
  • Mirror Dimension: Creates and reshapes a separate space; using his own dimension lets him perceive another sorcerer’s casting in greater detail 67 99.
  • Spatial fractures: Projects glass-like fractures toward an opponent 338.
  • Limit: His strengthened Mirror Dimension cannot withstand Wang Yang’s Power Stone-enhanced sword strike 99.

Defensive Magic

Strange’s defensive repertoire includes ordinary shields and several divine spells 370 374.

  • Rings of Raggadorr: Can merge two rings into one large defense and reinforce it with runes. Blocks Jeremy’s Eternity-enhanced spear attacks 370 371.
  • Seraphim Shield: Described as his strongest shield; withstands a strike from Eternity’s Afterimage 374 377.
  • Hoggoth’s Hoary Hosts: Uses blue butterflies to survive the Afterimage’s beam and reappear unharmed 377.
  • Limits: His Rings shatter against the enhanced Dark Elf, while his Seraphim Shield breaks under the shock wave of Wang Yang’s clash with Agamotto 79 374.

Offensive Magic

  • Crimson Bands: Summons magical restraints, strikes distant targets, and binds opponents 65 338.
  • Vishanti Holy Sword: Conjures a flaming sword for close combat; already knows the spell during his promotion trial 69 78.
  • Bolts of Balthakk: Releases branching golden lightning. During his spar, Wang Yang praises his understanding but criticizes the spell’s slow speed and dispersed power 336.
  • Conjured blades: Forms a large runic blade as part of a combined attack 338.
  • Limit: Spell destruction can cause backlash, as shown when Wang Yang tears apart his Crimson Bands 338.

Mental Power and Perception

Strange’s mental strength supports both resistance and magical awareness 167 236.

  • Gradually overpowers Ebony Maw’s control of his body, although Wang Yang must intervene to save him from Maw’s final attempt 167 168.
  • Detects Chthon’s presence before the god becomes visible, earning Chthon’s acknowledgment of his perception 236.
  • Uses mental power to avert his gaze from Chthon’s mind-drawing darkness 237.

Combat and Physical Enhancement

Strange supplements hand-to-hand techniques with magic-enhanced speed, strength, and movement 68 69.

  • Briefly pressures Mordo during his trial, though Mordo is initially testing him rather than fighting at full strength 69.
  • Adopts dimensional combat to address his shortage of practical experience 338 339.
  • Without access to magic, remains only somewhat physically stronger than an ordinary person 165.

Medical Expertise

  • Before becoming a sorcerer, earns renown for treating neurological conditions 59.
  • His Main Universe counterpart is identified as New York’s most famous neurosurgeon before his magical career 432.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Red cloak — Worn when Strange confronts the Church of Eternity. His Main Universe counterpart also arrives with a red cloak during his first meeting with Wang Yang 377 431.
  • Sorcerer’s monk robes — Worn during his duel with Jeremy at the Sorcerers’ Assembly 370.

Relationships

  • Mordo — Principal instructor and examiner in Wang Yang’s universe. In the Main Universe, their former teacher–student bond becomes an enmity after Mordo’s turn to Black Magic 59 70 432 438.

  • Wong — Close fellow sorcerer. They fight Cull Obsidian together and consult over Kamar-Taj’s loss of access to Cosmic Energy 165 233.
  • Wanda — Student entrusted to his care by Wang Yang. Strange oversees her training and shields her from Chthon 236.
  • The Vishanti — Sources of his white magic whose price costs him his senses. They restore those senses and stop collecting payment after Wang Yang’s intervention 373 375.
  • Professor X — Fellow Illuminati member of the Main Universe counterpart. Their shared membership does not make cooperation easy; Strange’s earlier approaches are politely refused 433 443.
  • Eternity — Watches Strange battle the Church’s Afterimage and praises his ability to withstand and restrain its energy, despite the manifestation possessing only a tiny fraction of Eternity’s power 378.
