Background / History
Tysha and House Lannister
Tyrion married Tysha, a farmer’s daughter he met on the road. Jaime and Tywin subsequently deceived him into believing she had been a prostitute and that the marriage had merely been a game. Tyrion continued to believe this account until Gendry exposed the deception after the fall of King’s Landing 185.
Tywin sought several noble marriages for Tyrion, approaching houses in the Vale, Riverlands, Dorne, Reach, and elsewhere. The proposals met repeated rejection, including insults directed at Tyrion’s dwarfism. These negotiations later helped Tyrion understand that his father had destroyed his marriage to preserve him as a tool for a political alliance 185.
Winterfell and the Wall
At Winterfell, Tyrion befriended Jon Snow, recognizing the exclusion they both experienced among the nobility. He correctly identified Jon’s reasons for considering the Night’s Watch, warned him that it had become a refuge for criminals, and encouraged him to consider alternatives. His warning that Eddard would soon march south against the Mercenary King helped unsettle Jon’s plans; Jon ultimately accompanied Eddard rather than joining the Watch 39 52.
Tyrion nevertheless visited the Wall himself. Mormont valued his intelligence and told him that the Watch needed men like him, but Tyrion had no intention of accepting its cold, hardship, and isolation. His visit also established a hostile relationship with Alliser Thorne, whose resentment of the Lannisters Tyrion answered with mockery 52.
Catelyn’s Attempted Arrest
Catelyn Stark’s attempt to detain Tyrion collapsed when disguised men presenting themselves as Stone Crows intervened. Tyrion accused Littlefinger of misleading her about the dagger connected to the attack on Bran, hired Bronn and Chiggen, and departed with his rescuers 58.
Tyrion noticed that the supposed wildlings were unusually well fed, properly equipped, and familiar with the Trident. He suspected that a concealed power had arranged the encounter and resolved to urge Tywin against acting rashly. He later sent his father a letter, despite doubting that it would change his response 59 63.
Tywin treated the attempted abduction as an affront to Lannister honor rather than an injury to a beloved son. He explicitly told Kevan that Tyrion’s survival mattered less to him than the family’s reputation 63.
Acting Hand of the King
Following major Lannister reverses in the Riverlands, Tyrion learned from Tywin that Eddard Stark’s execution had used an impostor and that the real Eddard remained alive. Tyrion also recognized that Tywin’s ruthlessness had left their house dangerously short of allies 104 105.
Tyrion entered King’s Landing with Bronn and Timett and presented Tywin’s letter appointing him acting Hand. The Small Council accepted his authority despite Cersei’s opposition. He then began consolidating control over the capital, removing Janos Slynt and installing Jacelyn Bywater as commander of the Gold Cloaks 112 127.
He investigated the court through selective disclosures and bargaining. He planned to give Pycelle, Varys, and Littlefinger different accounts of Myrcella’s proposed marriage to identify an informant. Although convinced that Littlefinger had falsely implicated him in Bran’s attack, he still negotiated with him for the Vale’s support because the Lannisters needed its army 127 128 129.
The capital’s hunger increasingly dominated his administration. The High Septon offered only a small contribution from the Great Sept’s alms, while Joffrey aggravated unrest by shooting petitioners. Tyrion understood that such displays would establish Joffrey’s reputation as a tyrant rather than a courageous king 127 128.
Negotiations and Preparations for Siege
Tyrion secretly drugged Cersei before receiving Robb Stark’s envoy, Cleo Frey. Publicly, he rejected most Stark demands and required submission to the Iron Throne; privately, he entrusted Cleo with a letter revealing that Eddard was alive in the Black Cells 156.
He also sought outside support through offers of Small Council seats and Joffrey’s marriage. To preserve a royal heir beyond the coming siege, he sent Myrcella toward Braavos under Ser Arys’s protection with four escort ships. The royal party’s return from the docks triggered a violent confrontation with the starving population 162 163 164.
Tyrion prepared wildfire weapons, ordered heavy chains forged, and burned the ground between the Blackwater Rush and the city walls. The clearance destroyed the poor dock district along with its shops, warehouses, taverns, and other livelihoods. Gendry acknowledged the military value of the measure, while Rosso anticipated the hatred it would earn Tyrion 127 140 170.
Despite having visited the Wall, Tyrion dismissed Alliser Thorne’s report that dead rangers had risen as wights. He allowed Thorne to recruit men but turned his attention to Gendry’s declaration of war 157.
Defeat and Judgment
During the fall of King’s Landing, Tyrion personally led a counterattack toward the King’s Gate, then fought toward the Mud Gate and a bridge formed from tangled ships. Ser Mandon Moore turned on him during the fighting; Podrick Payne stabbed Mandon in the back and saved Tyrion 179.
At the subsequent judgment, Shae testified against him. Gendry then revealed the truth about Tysha, shattering Tyrion’s remaining trust in Jaime and Tywin. Tyrion confessed to supporting Cersei’s rule and the wildfire plot, chose the Wall over execution, and vowed revenge against his family 185.
While awaiting his transfer, Tyrion asked that Podrick’s future be secured and that Gendry help him find Tysha. His later letter to Jaime deepened their estrangement by accusing Jaime and Cersei of betraying their family 218 310.
Service at the Wall
Tyrion eventually reached the Wall alongside Jaime and other incoming brothers. He reunited with Renly, renewed his friendship with Jon, and agreed to help the garrison employ wildfire against the undead 348 349 350.
During the battle, Jaime saved a boy from the Cannibal Tribes but suffered a fatal wound from a White Walker’s Cold-Iron Spear. He asked Tyrion to protect Myrcella. Tyrion had his brother burned with wildfire before he could become a wight and named the rescued boy Jaime. Gendry also promised Tyrion that he would protect Myrcella 364.
Canal Minister
After the war at the Wall, the surviving Night’s Watch members received honorary status and another opportunity to choose their futures. Gendry recognized Tyrion’s command of the Wildfire Throwing Corps, particularly his willingness to take command in dangerous circumstances and stand firm without retreat 393.
Tyrion was appointed Canal Minister and Earl of Canal City. His responsibilities included the canal connecting Ironman’s Bay to the Blue Fork, alongside other canal connections. Gendry later thanked Tyrion and Canal City’s workers before departing north to confront the Night’s King 393 395.
Appearance
- Build: A dwarf with a disproportionately large head and prominent forehead 35 218.
- Eyes: One black and one green 35.
- Hair: Long, straight, and so pale a gold that it appears almost white 35 218.
- Beard: A mixture of brown and golden hairs 35.
- Scarring: A facial scar is noted after the Battle of the Blackwater 185.
- Court clothing: As Hand, he wears black velvet with golden lion-head clasps, a necklace of linked gold hands, and a specially tailored crimson silk cloak edged in gold 127.
Personality
Tyrion relies on observation, wit, and verbal provocation. He identifies Jon’s insecurities with striking accuracy, trades insults with Alliser Thorne, and openly punctures Joffrey’s boasts about warfare. His experience as an outsider helps him establish friendships with people who are themselves marginalized 35 39 52.
For much of the war, his loyalty to House Lannister outweighs his resentment of its members. He believes his name and wealth protect him from being treated as merely a deformed dwarf, and he works to preserve the family even while recognizing Tywin’s rigidity and Cersei’s hostility. Learning the truth about Tysha transforms that loyalty into bitterness and an explicit desire for revenge 105 167 185.
He enjoys fine food, wine, and the ceremony of high office, but the burdens of governing trouble him far more than its privileges please him. Shae provides emotional security, although he refuses to bring her into the Tower of the Hand and eventually sends her away despite her distress 63 127 128 167.
