Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Transformation into a demon 1 2 Muzan Kibutsuji transforms him shortly after his arrival in the world. His initial panel records Constitution 3.1, Agility 3.2, Strength 3.1, and Spirit 1.2, with a normal adult rated at 1. He has no Blood Demon Art and remains hungry and cursed.
Foundational sword forms 14 Quickly learns the dojo’s simplest forms. His demonic perception makes demonstrations easier to follow, persuading Arakawa Akihiro to teach him Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu seriously.
Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu mastery 30 31 Repeated sparring with Kenshin Himura earns swordsmanship recognition on his panel. Spirit rises to 1.5, improving mental clarity and resistance to hunger; physical attributes remain unchanged.
“Perfect” condition 94 His panel changes “Immortal Body” from false to complete, removes sunlight, Nichirin Blades, and wisteria from his weaknesses, and clears both hunger and Muzan’s curse. He gains Devour and reaches 5.5 Spirit; physical attributes remain unchanged.
Sun Breathing comprehension 117 118 Learns from Tanjiro’s demonstration of Hinokami Kagura. His panel adds Sun Breathing, confirming his comprehension; all numerical attributes remain unchanged.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and not particularly burly, despite his exceptional strength. A Demon Slayer describes him as taller than most people, strong-looking, and handsome 7 10 95.
  • Eyes: Scarlet, with distinctive markings that expose his demonic identity during an inspection 40.
  • Hands: Develops calluses recognizable as signs of swordsmanship practice 95.
  • Human resemblance: Initially looks ordinary enough to mingle with townspeople without immediately attracting suspicion 9.

Personality

Su Mu regards eating humans as the boundary between preserving himself and becoming a monster. He does not reject every benefit of demonhood—he recognizes the value of its strength and lifespan—but fears losing his will and human memories to its instincts. His refusal to consume people persists despite worsening hunger and pressure from other demons 2 3 4 13.

His care for Kanao begins as pity and becomes a sustained commitment. He keeps his promise to feed her even in heavy rain, continues making time for her despite demanding journeys, and patiently encourages her to rediscover her feelings. He later forbids her from training while ill and insists that she deserves kindness 7 17 29 96.

That compassion does not make him indiscriminately merciful. He assaults householders to obtain information, kills a Corps inspector after being identified, and uses the danger to Tanjuro’s family to compel cooperation. He also avoids intervening when another demon attacks a settlement. His principles prohibit consuming humans, not all violence against them 8 15 40 51 66.

He is skeptical of heroic attempts to change an entire era through individual action. When Kenshin invites him to Kyoto, Su Mu warns that joining a faction could lead to endless killing and declines to accompany him 31.

Abilities & Skills

Demonic Physique and Regeneration

  • His initial constitution, agility, and strength exceed three times the normal adult baseline 2.
  • He easily lifts a hundred-jin stone lock overhead with one hand, pretending to struggle to conceal his strength 10.
  • He travels without tiring, covering a journey of one or two human days in roughly two to four hours 14.
  • He can continue fighting through severe wounds, including abdominal impalement and an almost-severed arm 73 77 78.
  • His “Perfect” panel lists a complete immortal body, but he explicitly does not test whether that means absolute immortality 94.

Enhanced Senses

  • His hearing and vision are far sharper than they were when he was human 8.
  • His perception helps him break down basic sword demonstrations into easily observed movements 14.
  • He detects other demons through a recognizable aura or scent 31 85.
  • These senses have limits: Akaza moves too quickly for him to follow clearly 87.

Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu

  • Learns the style first from Arakawa Akihiro and then through repeated bouts with Kenshin Himura 14 29 30.
  • Its central principle is concentrating the entire body’s strength into a decisive explosive attack, rather than relying on raw speed alone 30.
  • Uses a named Sword-drawing Slash in combat against Hiroshi Furukawa 73.
  • His early losses demonstrate that superior physical attributes do not automatically overcome refined timing and technique 29 30.

Sun Breathing

  • Learns by observing Tanjiro perform the twelve forms of Hinokami Kagura, which preserves Sun Breathing and its accompanying sword forms 117.
  • Practicing the breathing accelerates his blood flow, increases his strength, and produces an energy resembling the Sun’s heat 117.
  • Despite his transformed condition, that energy initially causes discomfort within his demonic body 117.
  • His character panel formally recognizes Sun Breathing after he comprehends it 118.

Blood Demon Art: Devour

  • Appears when his condition becomes “Perfect” 94.
  • Its panel description states that it can perfectly acquire a target’s talents, abilities, and Blood Demon Art 94 118.
  • No activation method, demonstrated use, or acquisition limit is established in the supplied passages 94 118.

Character Panel

  • A game-like display in his mind records his race, lifespan, abilities, weaknesses, condition, combat disciplines, and numerical attributes 2 30 118.
  • It reflects his current condition rather than functioning as an active source of instruction or assistance 31 118.
  • Increased Spirit makes his mind clearer and strengthens his ability to resist demonic cravings 30.

Former Weaknesses

Weakness Effect before his transformation Later condition
Human-flesh hunger Intensifies with continued abstinence. Ordinary food tastes like wax, and eating porridge later makes him hungrier 2 7 91. Hunger disappears from his panel when his condition becomes “Perfect” 94.
Sunlight Forces him into caves or concealed shelters during the day. Its proximity triggers an overwhelming instinctive fear 3 5 26. Removed as a weakness; he subsequently stands openly in sunlight 94 95.
Wisteria Its scent instinctively drives him off a road where incense is burning 39. Removed from his panel’s weaknesses 94.
Nichirin Blades Listed as a weakness; decapitation by one remains a lethal threat. Carrying his own blade is deeply unpleasant 2 78 87 89. Removed from his panel’s weaknesses 94.
Muzan’s curse His panel identifies him as cursed and under Muzan’s control 2 94. The curse disappears from his status field 94.
  • Before overcoming these weaknesses, Su Mu deliberately uses fear of sunlight to suppress his hunger temporarily 5.
  • He also holds his Nichirin Blade to resist his instincts, enduring its unpleasant effect on his demonic body 84 87 89.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade: A fiery-red blade capable of killing demons. Su Mu uses it to decapitate a hostile demon and values it specifically because ordinary weapons cannot reliably kill his own kind 32 33 38.
    • He wraps it in cloth to conceal it under the Sword Ban 32.
    • He uses it to dig a daylight hiding pit beneath an inn bed 26.
    • It undergoes an unusual change after he learns Sun Breathing; Su Mu believes its previous owner practiced Flame Breathing because of its original color 118.
  • Training swords: Uses wooden swords when sparring, then switches to iron swords with Kenshin because their clashes repeatedly destroy the wooden ones 29 30.

Background / History

Arrival and Kanao’s Rescue

Before entering the world of Demon Slayer, Su Mu was an ordinary company employee who enjoyed anime, films, and television. His initial excitement at arriving in a familiar fictional world collapses when Muzan turns him into a demon. He becomes despondent at the prospect of living as a human-eating creature under Muzan’s control 1.

He meets a starving girl resembling Kanao Tsuyuri and promises to bring her food. After learning about her abusive upbringing, he kills her father, obtains clean clothing for her, washes her injuries, and takes her away from the house. She becomes his traveling companion and calls him “Uncle” 2 18 19 20 21.

Training at the Hiko Dojo

While searching for Mount Sagiri and the Kamado family, Su Mu witnesses a samurai matching a Demon Slayer Corps swordsman. Learning that the samurai practices Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu leads him to the Hiko Dojo. He passes an intentionally difficult strength assessment and pays his tuition with valuables recovered from victims’ remains in a demon’s cave 8 9 10 13.

Arakawa Akihiro begins teaching him seriously after recognizing his rapid progress. When Su Mu’s physical strength makes further instruction difficult, Arakawa introduces him to Kenshin Himura. Repeated sparring with Kenshin brings mastery of the style and the first recorded increase in his Spirit 14 29 30.

Search for the Blue Spider Lily

Su Mu searches for the Blue Spider Lily because he believes it can overcome his demonic weaknesses and free him from Muzan’s curse. His search initially involves nighttime intrusions into homes; traveling with Kanao later makes residents more willing to answer questions peacefully 8 15 50 56.

After finally locating the Kamado family, he pressures the dying Tanjuro for information. Tanjuro recalls Kie picking briefly blooming flowers near Yoriichi Tsugikuni’s grave after paying respects to their ancestors. Su Mu treats this as the crucial lead and promises not to harm the family 55 66.

Conflict with the Corps and Akaza

Su Mu’s efforts to avoid the Demon Slayer Corps fail when a Hidden One discovers his marked eyes. He kills the inspector and flees, drawing Hiroshi Furukawa and other swordsmen into pursuit. Later clashes leave him bloodied and increasingly conscious of how far his life has moved from his former humanity 40 43 73.

He subsequently rescues Kanao from a swordsman holding her captive, killing the man despite a severe shoulder wound. His later encounter with Upper Rank Three Akaza exposes a much greater power gap: Akaza overwhelms him, shatters his bones, and leaves him nearly helpless. Kanao’s determination to protect him and their care for each other stir fragments of Akaza’s forgotten memories 77 87.

Perfect Condition and Sun Breathing

By Chapter 94, Su Mu’s panel records a complete immortal body, no weaknesses, no hunger, and no Muzan-imposed curse. He gains Devour and can finally stand in sunlight. A Corps swordsman subsequently dismisses the possibility that he is a demon precisely because he is outdoors in daylight 94 95.

Su Mu then urges Tanjiro toward demon slaying and explains the connection between Yoriichi, the Kamado family’s earrings, and Hinokami Kagura. He later learns Sun Breathing from Tanjiro’s demonstration, finding comprehension far easier than his earlier sword training 108 117 118.

Relationships

  • Kanao Tsuyuri — Rescued child, traveling companion, and swordsmanship student. He provides food, shelter, medical care, and emotional support; she helps search for the Blue Spider Lily and tries to protect him from Akaza. He firmly rejects her wish to become a demon 21 51 84 87 89 96.
  • Muzan Kibutsuji — The demon progenitor who transforms and curses him. Su Mu seeks freedom from his control, which disappears from his panel upon reaching “Perfect” condition 1 56 94.
  • Arakawa Akihiro — His first swordsmanship instructor. Arakawa recognizes his unusual potential and arranges further instruction under Kenshin 14 29.
  • Kenshin Himura — Instructor and sparring partner who helps him master Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu. Su Mu declines Kenshin’s invitation to accompany him to Kyoto 30 31.
  • Tanjiro Kamado — Initially fearful and distrustful of him; later becomes both a prospective demon slayer whom Su Mu guides and the demonstrator from whom he learns Sun Breathing 77 108 117.
  • Tanjuro Kamado — Source of the decisive flower-location clue. Su Mu coerces his cooperation but promises to spare his family, then helps Tanjiro carry his body out of the cave 66 68.
  • Kie Kamado and Nezuko Kamado — Initially fear for their family’s safety around him. He brings gifts, accepts a cup of wine from Nezuko as an apology on Tanjiro’s behalf, and later shares dinner with the family 100 105 113.
  • Hiroshi Furukawa — Demon Slayer Corps pursuer who recognizes Su Mu after his exposure and later confronts him in combat 40 73.
  • Akaza — An overwhelmingly stronger demon who criticizes Su Mu’s weakness and refusal to eat humans. Su Mu and Kanao’s bond nevertheless awakens painful traces of Akaza’s human memories 87 89.
