Background / History

Life in the Mountains

Nezuko belongs to the charcoal-selling Kamado family. When her father, Tanjuro, becomes seriously ill, the loss of his earnings and the expense of treatment push the household into poverty. Previously playful and occasionally willful, Nezuko stops playing and works to ease the family’s burden. She gathers wild vegetables and medicinal herbs that can either be used for Tanjuro or sold in town 50 62.

As his condition worsens, Tanjuro asks Nezuko to care for her younger siblings. She remains deeply afraid of losing him and seeks reassurance from Tanjiro that their father will recover 57 62.

Meeting Kanao

Nezuko encounters Kanao in the Kamado family graveyard and angrily reprimands her for standing on an ancestral gravestone. She kneels to apologize to the deceased on Kanao’s behalf, then feels guilty after learning that Kanao’s parents are dead 59 60.

Although Nezuko subsequently helps Kanao gather flowers, their conversation exposes a sharp difference in their experiences of family. When Nezuko confides that her father may soon die, Kanao suggests that his death would be something to celebrate. Unable to understand this response, Nezuko later asks Tanjiro whether anyone could truly be happy about a father’s death 60 62.

Tanjuro’s Death and Su Mu’s Attack

Nezuko and Kie silently grieve when Tanjiro brings Tanjuro’s body home. After the funeral, a blood-covered Su Mu breaks into their house. Kie shields Nezuko, while Tanjiro attacks the intruder with an axe. Nezuko witnesses Su Mu pull the weapon from his skull and protects her younger siblings during the confrontation 69 75 76.

Su Mu takes Tanjiro away, leaving the family terrified. Nezuko reassures her younger siblings despite her own fear and begs Giyu Tomioka to rescue their brother. Giyu’s blunt assertion that Tanjiro has probably been eaten leaves her devastated; she nevertheless helps support Kie when her mother faints. When Tanjiro returns alive, Nezuko rushes to meet him and falls in her haste 81.

She subsequently tries to push Giyu away when he seizes Tanjiro and demands to be taken to the demon. Following Tanjiro’s decision to leave the mountain home, Nezuko helps prepare the family’s move, though their destination is still uncertain 82 83.

Restaurant Work and Reunion

After relocating, Nezuko finds work at Imai’s restaurant. She endures customers’ crude remarks because her wages are important to the family, and she avoids even eating abandoned food for fear of losing the job 99 101.

Recognizing Su Mu among the customers, Nezuko recoils in terror. His earlier appearance still gives her nightmares, and she offers herself in exchange for her family’s safety. Su Mu instead says he will forgive Tanjiro’s axe attack if she drinks a cup of wine. She complies, then joins him and Kanao for a meal. His generosity and ability to sit in sunlight make her question whether he is really a demon 100 101.

Su Mu pressures Nezuko into taking him to her family and removes her from her restaurant job. Imai refuses to pay her for the month, leaving her distressed over the loss of her earnings. While shopping afterward, Su Mu makes her carry numerous purchases before explaining that they are gifts for her household 102 103.

The Marriage Misunderstanding

Nezuko interprets Su Mu’s gifts and attention as evidence that he intends to make her his wife. Believing refusal could endanger her family, she feels unable to reject him. At home, he drives away Jingi Group members harassing Kie, but his violent intervention also revives Nezuko’s fear of him 103 104.

After Nezuko privately explains her interpretation to Kie, her mother tearfully asks Su Mu to treat her daughter well. Su Mu is initially confused: he had not intended the visit as a marriage proposal 104.

The misunderstanding deepens when Tanjiro says that Su Mu has told him everything and that he has agreed. Nezuko believes her brother has accepted the supposed marriage arrangement; Tanjiro is actually agreeing to pursue demon hunting and mistakes her tears for concern over that dangerous choice 111.

Despite feeling sacrificed, Nezuko gradually becomes more receptive to Su Mu. His kindness toward Takeo and tenderness toward Kanao make her wonder whether she, too, could feel safe with him. She begins showing jealousy over his attention to Kanao and quietly refills his wine during a family meal 112 113.

Beginning Training

Nezuko watches Tanjiro practice with Su Mu’s Nichirin Blade while looking after the younger children. She later joins the household’s training, sparring against Kanao with a wooden sword and repeatedly returning to the fight after being knocked down 118 119.

Appearance

Nezuko has fair skin, well-proportioned features, and a gentle expression 99.

  • Hair: Long and smooth; later worn in a round bun, with orange coloring at the ends 59 99.
  • Clothing: Initially seen in a pink kimono. During the family’s hardship, she wears patched clothes and alters her own garments to fit 59 62 101.
  • Expressions: Frequently puffs out her cheeks when angry or frustrated, including during disputes with Kanao and her reluctant shopping trip with Su Mu 59 103 111.

Personality

Nezuko is strongly devoted to her family. She hides her sadness behind a cheerful smile for Tanjiro, works to supplement the household’s income, and comforts her younger siblings even when she is frightened herself. Her willingness to offer her own life to Su Mu reflects how far she will go to protect them 62 81 100.

She is respectful toward the dead and quick to feel remorse when she believes she has hurt someone. Her anger at Kanao’s behavior in the graveyard immediately gives way to guilt after learning about the other girl’s parents 59 60.

Her fear does not entirely suppress her temper. She privately fumes over Su Mu’s treatment, resents losing her wages, and bristles when Kanao calls her a crybaby. She also steps beside Kie to confront a threatening man, despite having no demonstrated ability to overpower him 103 104 111.

Nezuko’s feelings toward Su Mu combine fear, resentment, gratitude, and emerging attraction. She notices his kindness but remains constrained by the belief that displeasing him could put her family at risk 102 104 112.

Abilities & Skills

Foraging and Household Support

Nezuko contributes practical work to the household during its financial difficulties 62.

  • Collects wild vegetables near the family home 62.
  • Recognizes some medicinal herbs from Tanjuro’s medicine and gathers them for treatment or sale 62.
  • Alters her clothing to fit and helps care for her younger siblings 101 118.

Swordsmanship

Nezuko begins practicing with a wooden sword alongside the other Kamado children 119.

  • Shows persistence by resuming her attacks after being knocked down 119.
  • Remains substantially weaker than Kanao, who can put her down with a single strike 119.

Relationships

  • Tanjiro Kamado — Older brother. They share the burden of supporting the family, but their failure to clarify Su Mu’s intentions leaves Nezuko believing Tanjiro has agreed to sacrifice her through marriage 62 111.
  • Kie Kamado — Mother. Each protects the other during threats to the household; Kie fears Nezuko will suffer under the supposed marriage arrangement 75 104 111.
  • Tanjuro Kamado — Father. His illness prompts Nezuko to take on more responsibilities. Konpeitō later reminds her of the sweets he brought home after selling charcoal 57 62 103.
  • Takeo, Shigeru, and Delia — Younger siblings whom she shields, reassures, and helps look after 76 81 118.
  • Su Mu — Initially a source of terror, later a protector and object of conflicted attraction. Nezuko believes he intends to marry her, though that belief begins as a misunderstanding 100 104 111 112.
  • Kanao Tsuyuri — Peer, rival for Su Mu’s attention, and later sparring partner. Their contrasting family experiences cause friction from their first meeting 59 60 111 119.
  • Imai — Former employer. He withholds Nezuko’s monthly pay when Su Mu abruptly takes her away from the restaurant 103.

Connection to Su Mu’s Prior Knowledge

  • Su Mu remembers the original-story Nezuko as an exceptional demon who never fed on humans, attributing her resistance to her resolve, Sakonji Urokodaki’s help, and a possible connection to the Blue Spider Lily 4.
  • He also recalls her eventually surviving sunlight and believes that eating the flower explains this ability. These recollections motivate his search near the Kamado home; they are not transformations demonstrated by the human Nezuko in the events shown 5 6 56 106.
