Ch. 54Cooperation

Norton learned that the Awenji People were Birch Island’s indigenous inhabitants, driven into conflict with Birch Town over the dead birch trees needed to survive the recurring snow disaster. When over a thousand Awenji warriors attacked Birch Town, Norton struck down their leader and ordered his officers to fight without killing them, saying he needed the Awenji People.
