The shrine built atop a high mountain could not be called dilapidated, but it certainly qualified as remote.
Although shrines did not necessarily have to stand in populated areas, consideration for worshippers and offerings meant their locations should not be too secluded.
Thus, with not a single village in sight nearby and a flight of steps long enough to daunt even vigorous young men, it was quite common for Hakurei Shrine to see no villagers coming to worship at all.
Most residents of the Human Village merely knew that the shrine existed, without knowing anything about the specific god enshrined there.
At that moment, Yukari Yakumo was climbing the steps one by one, entering the Approach ahead.
She showed no surprise that the shrine remained spotless despite its scarcity of worshippers, nor did she use her incredibly convenient gaps. Instead, she gazed at the distant torii and walked calmly onward.
In this brief span, she had already reached the end of the fairly broad Main Approach, yet Yukari Yakumo did not stop.
Incredibly, although the Approach appeared to have an end when seen from afar, once she actually set foot upon it, that end seemed to recede again.
Faced with this strange phenomenon, Yukari Yakumo continued forward without a change in expression. With each step, the rainwater remaining on the Approach's paving stones grew drier, and sunlight, absent from Gensokyo these past few days, shone through gaps in the shade of the trees beside her.
At the torii at the end of the Approach, a black-haired boy sat quietly, as though asleep.
"Although I never expected you to work, isn't sunbathing like this a little too idle? I've been run off my feet."
Yukari Yakumo spoke in feigned anger, an intriguing smile on her face.
"Leaving all the
