"To become the Lord of Mysteries the moment I woke up... that would be the same as dying without ever knowing it."
Klein could not help muttering to himself.
Bethel wanted to glance at him, but then remembered that their consciousnesses were now in the same body. Without moving, he asked casually, "Do you regret it? Do you really wish you could have died like that? Still, that would indeed be a perfect way to die. Humans all fear death."
"The reason Death is worshipped is precisely because his existence gives death an endpoint, making it a true 'end.'"
Humans always feared the unknown, and Death essentially gave people something to look forward to in the world after death. In this respect, the Seven Gods' promise to humanity that "the devout will enter the Kingdom of God after death and dwell with their god" was the same. Both Death and the Seven Gods turned death from something unknowable into something knowable. People still felt inevitable fear when facing death, but they also had spiritual solace and peace.
And Death went a step further in this regard. A nation where the living and the dead lived together diminished the horror of death to the greatest possible extent.
But "death" itself still deserved reverence. For someone of advanced age to die in their sleep was considered the most perfect departure, going painlessly to their god's side. Those images matched "Klein Moretti wrapped in the Curtain" perfectly.
At this, Klein could not help sighing, a slight smile appearing on his face:
"I have indeed thought that way. When I was being hunted by gods, dying because of Sefirah Castle, and still having to endure this fate I never wanted, I thought about death too. I wondered whether being dead might be better."
