Background / History

Fourth Epoch and Fall

Before the War of the Four Emperors, Salinger investigated “hidden adjacent pathways.” Experiments on his believers convinced him that Corpse Collectors, Demonesses, and Hunters could switch pathways at high sequences, though with somewhat greater risk than ordinary adjacent-pathway transitions 561.

He targeted Alista Tudor during the war, killed him, and claimed the Red Priest Uniqueness and characteristics. Other gods were unwilling to handle powers carrying the accumulated mental imprints of three Sequence Ones and an insane true god, leaving Salinger the war’s last surviving participant and greatest beneficiary 561.

Salinger attempted to suppress those imprints with the River of Eternal Darkness before accommodating the Uniqueness. The intense vitality of the Red Priest powers proved incompatible with his deathly state. Further reliance on the river failed to establish a balance; he descended into madness and burned away 561.

Slumber and Suppression

Salinger remained in the River of Eternal Darkness for an additional thirteen or fourteen hundred years because his intended resurrection contingency, Azik Eggers, did not fulfill that role 251.

During his absence, Northern Continent powers destroyed Balam’s records, seized cultural artifacts, and promoted the claim that Death had never existed as a true god. In the Beyonder world, they also diminished his mystical traces and interfered with his resurrection arrangements 250.

Resurrection through the Pale Empress

The Artificial God of Death was a separate awakened existence formed from the Death Uniqueness and one Sequence One characteristic through prolonged prayer and sacrifice. It was not simply Salinger restored 241 251.

The Pale Empress, Shea Eggs, fought and consumed this artificial deity. When the dangerous accommodation began awakening Death’s will, Suah killed her with a spear. The sound of waves subsequently reached Beyonders throughout the Death Pathway 248.

Within the waters of death, Salinger severed the portion of his manifested face resembling Azik and assumed the Pale Empress’s appearance. Her voluntary surrender of her memories, identity, and soul supplied him with knowledge of the modern world 249 250.

His return was followed by targeted attacks on Southern Continent cities. Those who refused submission, invoked the Seven Gods, or were judged hostile were killed. The resulting terror rapidly strengthened his faith and anchors 250.

Balam and Divine Alliances

Salinger confronted Edward Vaughan and learned that Edward’s blessings and dealings with Sia Palenque Eggers had helped make his resurrection possible. Rather than accept Edward’s invitation to kill him, Salinger judged it a trap and departed for Calderón, where he began controlling the river’s tributary 251.

He subsequently helped Edward isolate Laxia for the True Creator’s advancement ritual and sought support for becoming Eternal Darkness 257 273.

In Balam, Salinger used the Pale Empress’s memories and ordinary people’s demands to understand necessary laws and policies. His willingness to permit improvements in living conditions also served as leverage when seeking the True Creator’s assistance 283.

Encounters with Klein

While Klein hunted a Spirit World Plunderer in Calderón, Salinger appeared and seized Azik’s Copper Whistle. Klein escaped to Sefirah Castle 293.

Later, when Azik’s Sunken Laurel approached the Rorsted Archipelago, Klein’s warning prompted Salinger to order a withdrawal. Salinger could not identify the powerful presence Azik described and considered the encounter less important than assisting Intis against the Lord of Storms 357.

Betrayal by the God of Combat

Salinger’s reluctant cooperation with Badheil did not prevent clashes between them. In one exchange, he used the River of the Underworld’s waters to dissolve incoming sword light, but recognized that even their combined strength was insufficient to drive back Leodero 360.

Badheil later ambushed him outright, severely injuring his Feathered Serpent body and pursuing him toward Calderón. Salinger threatened to let Eternal Darkness drown Feysac if he died 381 394.

The Hidden Sage’s ascension changed the balance of power and made Badheil hesitate to finish him. Salinger escaped to the riverbank, expelled the embedded Light of Dawn, and entered recuperative slumber. The encounter convinced him that remaining weak would eventually reduce him to another god’s bargaining chip 394.

Refusal to Protect the Highlands

When Leodero threatened the Highlands, Salinger forbade intervention. He regarded the kingdom as a rival faith established after his fall and feared that defending it would give Leodero grounds to attack Balam 528.

He also viewed the anticipated deaths as an opportunity to acquire more believers. Azik was deeply distressed by the prohibition, while Salinger watched the crisis without sharing his concern for its victims 528.

Calderón Deathtrap

A message apparently associated with Bethel Abraham reached Salinger directly, making him suspect a trap. Before he could act, the Mother of Heaven attacked him in Calderón 548.

She used his wounds to draw him into layered dreams while Antigonus began turning his physical body into a marionette. Salinger’s status resisted complete control, but his movements and thoughts slowed, leaving him vulnerable to repeated attacks 548 552 553.

The God of Combat killed the Mother of Heaven and then the Feathered Serpent. Salinger nevertheless revived by merging with a wandering mental imprint and exploiting Calderón’s rule that transformed living beings into the dead 557 560.

He begged Edward for the final Pale Emperor characteristic, offering anything he possessed. Edward refused and disclosed that he wanted access to the River of Eternal Darkness himself. Cornered, Salinger took the Mother of Heaven’s Darkness Pathway characteristics and Uniqueness instead 560 561.

Entrapment in the River

After this accommodation, Salinger repeatedly sank into the River of Eternal Darkness and returned. He considered sacrificing Azik or Haiter as substitutes, but initially lacked a way to communicate the plan 576.

His church later received messages suggesting that he was trapped. Haiter oversaw the excavation of a river channel in Balam and attempted to sacrifice himself and Azik to secure Death’s release 641.

Appearance

  • Resurrected human appearance: Initially takes on the Pale Empress’s features, with a cold, solemn expression, long black hair, and pale flames turning light-brown eyes white 249.
  • Distinguishing traits: Small feathers and scales appear near the corners of his eyes and along his neck; his face is sharply sculpted and beautiful 249 250.
  • Mythical Creature Form: An enormous winged Feathered Serpent 250 381 394.

Personality

Salinger is reserved, calculating, and frequently almost expressionless. After his resurrection, he ranks immediate threats—the Evernight Goddess, God of Combat, and Northern Continent—above the distant apocalypse and Outer Deities. He recognizes that solving future dangers is meaningless if he cannot first survive his present enemies 251.

His treatment of humanity is largely instrumental. He permits reforms when they improve his political position, but regards living and dead subjects as similarly useful sources of belief. He accepts submission enforced through slaughter and sees mass death in the Highlands as an opportunity to replenish his anchors 250 283 528.

Despite his authority over death, he fiercely resists dying again. Repeated defeats make him increasingly cautious, but his retreat is intended to preserve an opportunity for advancement rather than settle for permanent weakness. When cornered, he is willing to gamble on dangerous accommodation 394 551 560 576.

Worship and Rule

  • Afterlife promise: Southern Continent traditions describe the dead joining Death by his river and receiving eternal peace 144.
  • Restored religion: His resurrection reunites worship around the Church of Death, with Haiter overseeing religious affairs and Azik handling secular administration 250 283.
  • Living alongside the dead: Balam employs zombies to maintain order, spirits and wraiths to oversee urban safety, and skeletons to reclaim farmland 307.
  • Human sacrifice: By the time of the Highlands crisis, the church has reduced its practice to one human sacrifice a week and rewards the victim’s family—an enormous concession by its former standards 528.
  • Basis of devotion: The visible coexistence of living and dead makes the afterlife more concrete, reducing uncertainty without eliminating fear of death itself 559.
