Background / History
Turtwig and Minccino were prepared by the original Tong Hua’s parents as his starter Pokémon. By the time the transmigrated Tong Hua releases them at the abandoned ranch, both have been his predecessor’s companions for some time 2.
Tong Hua wonders why Turtwig has not evolved despite appearing well raised. He concludes that his predecessor likely stopped battle training after his parents’ deaths, blaming his ambition to become a Trainer for the tragedy and keeping the Pokémon as pets and family instead. This is Tong Hua’s inference rather than a confirmed account of their training 2.
On their first day at the ranch, Turtwig drinks well water to relieve his apparent thirst, shares Tong Hua’s tomato-and-egg noodles, and helps clean the cabin and clear its entrance. Tong Hua resolves to give both Pokémon a happy life 2.
Appearance
- Head sprout — Initially looks slightly yellow; its leaves can be spun to produce a breeze 2 19.
- Earthen shell — Appears somewhat dry when he first emerges from his Poké Ball. Tong Hua later judges him to be well raised 2.
- Small stature — Can perch on Tong Hua’s head or travel in his bamboo basket 12 22.
Personality
Turtwig’s initially dopey, curious manner contrasts with his dependability at work. He eagerly demonstrates his usefulness when the village chief explains the benefits of Grass-type Pokémon, and Tong Hua repeatedly considers him the hardest worker or the expert at watering 2 4 8 11 47.
He is affectionate and protective, seeking Tong Hua’s attention and resisting being left behind on outings. He moves to guard Tong Hua when Jessica approaches closely and insists on joining the investigation of the mysterious stream Pokémon even after being injured 2 30 34 39.
Turtwig enjoys muddy fields, spring rain, and rough-and-tumble play. He also has a strong appetite: the prospect of missing breakfast wakes him immediately. Although mischievous with Minccino, he becomes sheepish after accidentally covering her in dirt and brushes it away 5 27 28 38 46.
Abilities & Skills
Vine Whip
Turtwig’s most frequently demonstrated move serves as a versatile tool for farm work, carrying objects, and keeping others from falling 7 8 29 35.
- Object handling: Carries a cooking pot, operates watering cans and buckets, handles a shovel, and stacks cut branches 7 22 38.
- Planting and harvesting: Buries seeds faster than Tong Hua can by hand and pulls potato plants from the soil 8 38.
- Fishing: Catches fish directly and wraps vines around Tong Hua’s waist to brace him against powerful catches 19 42 50.
- Anchoring: Secures Tong Hua to a tree during the encounter with the underwater tentacle, preventing him from being dragged into the stream 29.
- Rescue attempt: Catches Jessica’s wrist when she slips, though she, Tong Hua, and Turtwig still tumble into the mud 35.
- Limits: His vines cannot reach the walls inside the repaired Pokémon Cottage’s optical illusion 25.
Crop-Growth Support
Turtwig’s activity in the fields helps crops grow better, matching the village chief’s advice about Grass-type Pokémon 4 11.
- Works alongside Bounsweet to water and tend the vegetable beds 7 22 47.
- Tong Hua observes seedlings visibly growing taller during their care 11.
- Tong Hua credits Turtwig, Bounsweet, and Orthworm when Jessica finds potatoes and cabbages apparently ripe after only four days 35.
- His individual contribution is not measured separately from the other Pokémon’s effects 11 35.
Strength and Practical Assistance
- Helps Tong Hua carry a wooden ladder during cottage repairs 25.
- Is singled out alongside Orthworm as particularly strong when Tong Hua plans infrastructure improvements 46.
- Passes tools precisely during construction of the deluxe Pokémon Cottage 47.
- Spins his head leaves to help blow Tong Hua dry after fishing 19.
Relationships
- Tong Hua — Owner and close companion. They share meals and sleep together; Turtwig commonly claims the seat on his head during travel 2 3 12.
- Minccino — Longtime fellow companion and playful rival. They cooperate on planting and fishing, compete for attention, and exchange dirt- and hay-related mischief 4 8 19 38 46.
- Bounsweet — Regular farming partner. Bounsweet digs planting holes while Turtwig places seeds, and both take responsibility for watering 7 8 47.
- Pink and green Celebi — New ranch companions who initially prompt Turtwig and Minccino to unite in seeking Tong Hua’s attention. Turtwig nevertheless welcomes them; the green Celebi takes his usual head perch 20 21.
- Orthworm — Friend from their early fieldwork. Turtwig is delighted to reunite with him and welcomes him when he officially joins Fairy Tale Ranch 44 45.
- Jessica — Initially treated cautiously, but Turtwig later tries to save her from slipping in the fields 34 35.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Early ranch establishment: Helps clear planting beds and forms a seed-planting assembly line with Bounsweet and Minccino. When Bibarel’s family confronts the ranch Pokémon, Tong Hua stops Turtwig from fighting to protect the fields and negotiate peacefully 6 8 9.
- Forest resource gathering: Leads Tong Hua to the fast-growing eucalyptus grove, then helps collect branches and catches fish with Minccino 18 19 22.
- Tangrowth incident: Anchors Tong Hua during a violent pull on his fishing line. The rod snaps, and Tong Hua lands on Turtwig and Minccino, briefly knocking them unconscious. Their injuries are superficial and treated with Potion; Turtwig then joins the return investigation and helps coax Tangrowth out of the pond 29 30.
- First harvest: Joins the rapid harvesting of ten potato beds and helps Tong Hua collect approximately 100 kilograms of cabbage 38.
- Ranch improvements: Gathers hay for Orthworm’s bedding, continues tending crops, and assists with the deluxe Pokémon Cottage’s construction 46 47.
- Sea fishing: Helps remove five horse mackerel from their hooks, braces Tong Hua during the red seabream catch, and supports him against the unidentified large Pokémon hooked at Wind-Famous Beach 41 42 50.
