Background / History
Life in Stone Village
Shi Yunfeng grew up in Stone Village, where his father, Shi Yunshan, led the hunting party. Before meeting Di Yi, he had never traveled farther than the surrounding mountains or interacted with people from other villages. Stories told by village elders inspired him to see the outside world and become a powerful hero 3 4.
He was beside his father when Di Yi approached the village. His excitement at meeting an outsider turned to fear when Di Yi shattered the ground with a step. Father and son backed away from the stranger’s attempted embrace, fearing that his strength would crush them 4.
The Willow Tree’s Tribulation
During the sudden storm, Yunfeng secured his windows at his father’s instruction but remained unable to sleep. Watching lightning split distant mountains, he prayed to the village’s Sacrificial Spirit for protection 6.
He then witnessed an immense Willow Tree battling an ocean of lightning in the sky. The spectacle overturned his belief that gods were merely powerful beasts or ancient sacrificial spirits glorified by later generations. The tree was subsequently struck down and fell into Stone Village 7.
Hunting with Di Yi
Yunfeng accompanied the village hunting party when Di Yi joined its expedition. He expressed concern about confronting the enormous creatures of the mountains; Di Yi later recalled his warning that Stone Village’s people could not overcome a primordial remnant, regardless of their numbers 10 14.
After a Fei Village hunter killed the wildcat they had prepared to ambush, the party relinquished it under the wilderness rule that prey belonged to whoever killed it first. Yunfeng also witnessed Di Yi destroy a hidden Five-Colored Great Insect with a single arrow 11.
Journey Beyond the Great Wilderness
The village chief selected Yunfeng among more than a dozen young villagers to accompany Di Yi beyond the Great Wilderness. He departed with light luggage, torn between anticipation and hesitation. The Golden Hou joined them and provided transport for the long journey 25.
The dangers outside their familiar hunting grounds initially left the youths shaken, but they resolved to continue rather than abandon Stone Village’s hopes. Di Yi used a pursuing Mottled Tiger as an opportunity for them to learn its void-tearing precious technique, giving them a means of escaping stronger opponents 26 27.
Near the border, Yunfeng volunteered to question villagers and established that they were approaching Cloud-Rushing Town. He also spoke with traveling merchants, learning about frontier attacks and visitors from a noble residence seeking unusual beasts. Their insistence that the Golden Hou was merely a large dog made him question how much outsiders actually knew 27.
At Cloud-Rushing Town, Yunfeng and the others marveled at the city’s imposing walls. Though reluctant to leave Di Yi, they said goodbye and separated from him to begin life beyond the wilderness 28.
Appearance
- Tall youth: Nearly as tall as his father when introduced 4.
- Expressive reactions: His face turns pale at Di Yi’s overwhelming strength, while his eyes reveal both longing and hesitation before departure 4 25.
Personality
Yunfeng is curious and idealistic. He initially imagines the world beyond the Great Wilderness as a place of magnificent cities and extraordinary experts, and dreams of becoming a hero himself. Meeting ordinary traveling merchants later challenges his assumption that everyone outside is wealthy and powerful 4 27.
His caution reflects a practical understanding of the wilderness rather than unwillingness to advance. Although terrifying beasts frighten him, he continues the journey with the other youths and becomes increasingly resolute. By the time he reaches unfamiliar settlements, he readily approaches strangers to gather information 10 26 27 28.
Abilities & Skills
Mottled Tiger’s Precious Technique
- Void traversal: The technique tears through the void, providing a means of escape from opponents the village youths cannot defeat 26.
- Runic sensitivity: Studying the tiger’s technique made Yunfeng keenly sensitive to its runic fluctuations, helping him notice its renewed pursuit 26.
- Learning method: Acquired through repeated observation and practice during the journey, rather than a village inheritance 26 27.
Hunting and Wilderness Knowledge

- Builds rapport with traveling merchants and obtains information about regional geography, Cloud-Rushing Town’s dangers, and noble beast-seekers 27.
Relationships

- Di Yi — Guide and teacher, addressed as “Uncle Di Yi.” Leads him beyond the wilderness and arranges opportunities to learn the Mottled Tiger’s escape technique 25 26 27.
- Shi Tu and the other village youths — Traveling companions and fellow learners of the Mottled Tiger’s technique. Yunfeng reports their progress to Di Yi 26 27.
- Golden Hou — Protector and mount during the journey. Drives away dangerous creatures and fights the Mottled Tiger while the youths study its runes 25 26.
