Background / History
Origins and True Identity
The Golden Hou grew up in the stretch of the Great Wilderness surrounding Stone Village, where it ruled as an uncrowned king. Despite living nearby, it had never noticed the village before following Di Yi there; on arrival, it perceived a thin veil of light seemingly separating the settlement from the surrounding world 15 16.
Although Stone Village recognized it as a Golden Hou, its inhabitants classified it as a Primordial Remnant. The Heaven Mending Pavilion’s Divine Vine later corrected this: it was a first-generation pureblood Golden King of the True Hou, not a mixed-blood descendant. The Divine Vine regarded its existence as extraordinary because such beings should have disappeared with the end of the primordial and ancient ages 47.
Following Di Yi and Protecting Stone Village
After the Golden Hou stopped fighting, Di Yi spared it and stroked its fur. It followed him back to Stone Village, using golden light to carry a mountain of beast carcasses. Its obedient behavior astonished the villagers, whose chief knew the Golden Hou’s fearsome reputation 15 16.
The Golden Hou settled near the village entrance and tried to please Di Yi by arranging beast meat and giving him a lightning “massage.” Di Yi stopped the latter because its power could destroy the village. Its presence nevertheless became a useful deterrent while Stone Village’s new sacrificial spirit remained unresponsive 16.
When Di Yi’s medicinal cauldron erupted, the Golden Hou swept the villagers into golden light and carried them a thousand meters away before returning them safely. After nearly half a month at Stone Village, it refused to remain behind when Di Yi departed with the village youths, making clear that its attachment was to him rather than the settlement 24 25.
Journey Beyond the Great Wilderness
The Golden Hou transported and protected Di Yi’s party through the wilderness, driving away an enormous underground creature with a roar. Its repeated battles with a Mottled Tiger also gave Shi Yunfeng and the other youths opportunities to study the tiger’s void-tearing Precious Technique. Although stronger than the tiger, the Golden Hou could not prevent its escapes through the void 26.
Near Cloud-Rushing Town, merchants dismissed it as an unusually large golden dog. This misidentification continued in town, where Yu Qing’s party sought to obtain it as a gift. Di Yi refused a purchase offer, and an attempted seizure ended with the Golden Hou killing the attackers at the front while Di Yi killed the Rain Clan retainer directing them 27 28 29 30.
The Golden Hou subsequently annihilated the City Lord’s pursuing soldiers, shattered his Fierce Tiger manifestation, and destroyed Yu Qing’s group with its thunder pool. Cloud-Rushing Town’s sacrificial spirit then attacked under false information, but withdrew after accepting Di Yi’s explanation 31 32 33 34 35.
Heaven Mending Pavilion and the Hundred Broken Mountains
After traveling with Di Yi to the Heaven Mending Pavilion, the Golden Hou witnessed his ten Cave Heavens and the true spirits within them. Their overwhelming presence terrified it; once the manifestations vanished, it immediately returned to his side and nuzzled him 36 42 43.
Di Yi brought it on his journey to retrieve the Elder Paranormal’s sword, anticipating that leaving it behind could cause trouble. Before opening the passage, the Divine Vine identified its true bloodline and explained its unusual lack of inherited knowledge 47.
Inside the Hundred Broken Mountains, the Golden Hou enjoyed the dense spiritual energy, frightened away a Flying Python, and killed creatures blocking the approach to the Hundred Herb Garden. In the garden, it survived the suppressive field, tore apart an attacking purple vine, and gathered spiritual medicines for Di Yi. Learning of the Spirit-Connecting Divine Flower, Di Yi sought it as a possible means of developing the Golden Hou’s communication abilities; no successful enlightenment is shown in the supplied chapters 48 49 50.
Appearance
- Size: Approximately five or six meters long—small compared with the giant creatures of the primeval forests 33.
- Coat: Golden fur, with lightning-patterned fur on its feet that illuminates when it prepares to attack 27 30.
- Bearing: Tigerlike and imposing, though its docile behavior leads outsiders to mistake it for a dog 27.
- Limbs: Attacks with claws; one pursuing step is described as a hoof seemingly cast from gold 30 49.
- Radiance: Emits brilliant golden light, at times shining like a dazzling sun 35.
Personality
The Golden Hou is affectionate and determinedly loyal to Di Yi. It seeks strokes and praise, rubs against him when anxious, and refuses to be separated from him. During the Rain Clan battle, it acts partly to demonstrate its usefulness, fearing that Di Yi might stop taking it along if it becomes unnecessary baggage 25 34 49.
Its gentleness around Di Yi contrasts sharply with its territorial pride. It regards hostile beasts as challengers to its authority and resents powerful creatures flying overhead. It tolerates ordinary animals but reacts fiercely to insolence from vicious beasts and Primordial Remnants. Di Yi can restrain it through touch and gestures, even when it remains visibly displeased 30 35 49.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Precious Technique
The Golden Hou freely commands lightning and can develop its own Precious Technique, a capability Di Yi recognizes as evidence of its exceptional bloodline 47.
- Precision attacks: A claw swipe sends lightning through the foreheads of charging attackers 30.
- Defensive use: Golden-rune lightning stabilizes the ground around itself and Di Yi while intercepting the City Lord’s Fierce Tiger 32.
- Destructive force: Its lightning can pulverize a mountain; even limited use of its Precious Technique could devastate an area several li across 16 31.
- Technique disruption: Thunderous bombardment breaks apart the City Lord’s manifested Fierce Tiger and scatters its divine-radiance runes 33.
Thunder Pool
Its thunder pool manifests as an expanding golden vortex that consumes enemy attacks and releases immense quantities of lightning 34.
- Swallows the waves, lotus manifestations, and runes of the first two heavens of the Nine Heavens of the Rain Path 34.
- At full power, floods the watery realm with lightning, shatters the rain curtain, and kills Yu Qing’s group before the later heavens can develop 34.
Golden-Light Transport
Golden radiance allows the Golden Hou to carry people and heavy loads at high speed 15 24 26.
- Collects and transports a huge pile of beast carcasses 15.
- Evacuates Stone Village’s inhabitants a thousand meters away in an instant 24.
- Greatly accelerates the village youths’ journey through the wilderness 26.
Physical Strength and Resilience
The Golden Hou remains dangerous even without projecting a Precious Technique 31 50.
- Annihilates a commander identified as a Spirit Transformation Realm cultivator and his troops without using a Precious Technique 31.
- Overwhelms a powerful Primordial Remnant evolving toward pure blood, grievously wounding it in a single exchange before pursuing and crushing it 49.
- Physically uproots and tears apart a poisonous, spiritually awakened vine 50.
- Survives repeated trips through a medicinal field where the suppressive divine power increases more than tenfold—conditions that would destroy ordinary experts 50.
Perception and Intimidation
The Golden Hou detects threats and exerts pressure strong enough to rout other creatures 16 26 49.
- Notices the unusual veil surrounding Stone Village 16.
- Drives an enormous underground beast away with a rebuking roar 26.
- Senses concealed hostility and frightens a Flying Python and other lurking creatures into retreat 49.
- Perceives terrifying battle imagery associated with Di Yi’s ten true spirits 42.
Communication and Limitations
Its intelligence does not include fluent human-language comprehension or mental communication. According to the Divine Vine, its first-generation bloodline lacks the inherited fragments of understanding available to descendant creatures, so it must acquire knowledge through its own growth 25 47.
- Interprets gestures and emotional cues rather than reliably understanding spoken words 25 30.
- Mistakes Di Yi’s complaint about ending a battle too quickly for praise 34.
- Lacks the Mottled Tiger’s void-tearing ability, allowing the weaker creature to escape repeatedly 26.
- Cannot project runes or divine radiance beyond its body under the Hundred Herb Garden’s suppressive field 50.
- Is threatened by Cloud-Rushing Town’s sacrificial spirit’s sword attack and terrified by Di Yi’s true spirits 35 42.
Relationships
- Di Yi — Chosen companion and protector. The Golden Hou insists on following him, seeks his approval, and shares gathered spiritual medicines with him 25 34 50.
- Stone Village — Temporary home and protected community. Its presence deters beasts, and it rescues the inhabitants from the erupting medicinal cauldron 16 24.
- Shi Yunfeng and the village youths — Traveling companions whom it transports and protects during their departure from the Great Wilderness 25 26.
- Divine Vine — The Heaven Mending Pavilion’s sacrificial spirit, which recognizes its pureblood origins and explains why it lacks inherited communication knowledge 47.
