Gary returned to the Indigo League, settled matters with Reggie, helped resolve the conflict between Mew and Mewtwo, and advanced through the tournament with a string of decisive victories. After Ash lost to Ritchie, Gary began his next match against A Tao and took an early lead.

• Gary defeated Reggie’s Staraptor and Drapion in single battles, then won their double battle and encouraged Reggie to keep training with his Pokémon.
• Gary challenged Noland at the Battle Factory, then traveled to Indigo Plateau and wrote and rehearsed the Indigo League theme song.
• Gary visited Mewtwo on New Island, where Mew attacked and the two Legendary Pokémon fought until Gary urged them to protect all Pokémon, and Mewtwo left to find a home for the clones.
• Gary performed “I Got Pokémon!” at the opening ceremony, then swept his early League opponents with Nidoking and defeated Yoshiki to reach the top sixteen.
• Gary spent time with Lorelei, reunited with Professor Oak and Delia, and watched Ash advance before explaining that he aimed to win the Indigo League.
• Gary registered Rhydon, Squirtle, and Gengar for the championship rounds, encouraged Ash and Ritchie to remain friends, and warned Jessie, James, and Meowth against more stunts.
• Ritchie defeated Ash after Charizard refused to battle, while Gary learned Sneasel had evolved into Weavile and prepared to face A Tao.
• Gary’s Rhydon defeated A Tao’s Umbreon and Chansey, but A Tao stood back up and declared the match was not over.

Gary won the Indigo League, expanded his travels and friendships, and later reached the finals after defeating Tobias. The story left him preparing to face Ash again while both rivals looked ahead to their match.

• Gary defeated Raven in the quarterfinals and Lily in the semifinals before beating Mihara to become Indigo League champion.
• Gary celebrated with his friends and family, claimed his tournament rewards, and decided to travel to Johto and the Orange Islands.
• Gary stopped A Qiang and his lackeys from beating Sharpedo, then recruited Tracey as Professor Oak’s assistant and brought Sharpedo along.
• Gary welcomed Caitlin, Shauntal, Raven, A Tao, and other guests to Professor Oak’s Laboratory for a New Year celebration.
• Gary traveled to Alola, defeated Kiawe and Ilima in battles, and faced Tapu Koko after the guardian sensed Necrozma’s aura on his Z-Ring.
• Gary entered the second half of his match against Tobias with a 3:0 lead, then Mega Evolved Rayquaza and defeated Darkrai with Dragon Ascent.
• Tobias surrendered, sending Gary to the finals against Ash, and the two rivals shook hands after the match.
• Gary celebrated with the other Champions while Ash prepared, then met him beneath a streetlamp and exchanged good wishes before Ash ran off toward their final.
