Ch. 42I Am the Background

Gary had his Pokémon assessed and assigned to specialized training at Rainbow University before heading to a tutorial match. There, he confronted Yuto Sayo for taking over the arena and insulting his qualifications, then accepted her challenge after asserting his authority.

  • Xiaoxue, July, and Dingxiang evaluated Gary's Pokémon and planned specialized training, while Gary arranged for Nidoking, Nidorina, and Golduck to join them.
  • Gary gave Dingxiang a Moon Stone to oversee Nidorina's evolution and assigned July to prepare Growlithe's evolution into Arcanine after his match.
  • Gengar tried to win Xiaoxue's affection with Lick, accidentally paralyzing her, and Caitlin agreed to attend Gary's match in exchange for ice cream.
  • Gary and Caitlin arrived at the teacher-only arena and found Yuto Sayo and Trainer Academy students occupying it; Erika explained that Sayo's family sponsored the academy.
  • Sayo challenged Gary and demanded he resign if he lost, so Gary slapped her, rebuked her for disrespecting teachers, and threatened to expel the students who stayed.
  • Gary accepted Sayo's challenge and warned that he would strip her student status if she lost, then noticed her excited reaction and wondered whether she was a yandere M.

Ch. 43The Sinnoh delegation arrives

  • Gary explained that Gym Trainers test challengers’ skills and discussed how dual typings affect type matchups.
  • Erika sent out Tangela, while Gary chose Scyther and instructed it to use Double Team and Agility.
  • Scyther distracted Tangela with its clones, attacked from above with Wing Attack, and finished it with a Fury Cutter combo.
  • Gary reviewed Erika’s strategy and Scyther’s counterattack for the students.
  • Gary told the students they could switch Pokémon during Gym battles, prompting them to plan to test the tactic at Erika’s Celadon Gym.
  • Professor Rowan stopped President Monet from making lewd remarks about Erika, and Monet apologized by offering him tea.

Ch. 45Practical Battle Demonstration, Part Two

Gary defeated Erika’s Weepinbell and Gloom in a Gym demonstration match while teaching the students about battle tactics and preparation. Erika conceded the match and gave Gary the Badge, then declined an invitation to the evening dinner.

  • Erika ended the demonstration and gave Gary the Badge, then declined Principal Monet’s invitation to dinner with the Sinnoh Delegation.

Ch. 46A Huge Haul of Evolution Resources

After waking from a drunken night, Gary learned that Nidorina and Growlithe had evolved into Nidoqueen and Arcanine, while Scyther and Rhydon received Evolution items. He got Principal Monet’s permission to take Pokémon resources from the university’s Breeding Park and invited Caitlin and Cynthia to go with him.

Ch. 48The mischievous Gligar and the Sneasel in disguise

Gary visited Rainbow University’s Pokémon habitats and chose a mischievous Gligar and a deceptively clever Sneasel as his Pokémon. After securing both, he left with Cynthia and Caitlin to get food before the seminar.

  • Robert showed Gary and the others Gligar training in powerful winds, and Gary noticed Rascal had Champion-level potential.
  • Rascal outmaneuvered two strong Gligar and blocked their combined attacks, so Gary chose it and earned its trust before catching it.
  • Gary and the others crossed the sandy habitat, then entered the glacier area and saw the territorial Sneasel.
  • Gary exposed a dozing Sneasel’s disguise, and Sneasel judged him worthy before he caught it.
  • Gary thanked Robert, reminded him to bring Onix and Poliwhirl to the exchange event, and went to eat with Cynthia and Caitlin.
  • Caitlin asked for extra-spicy stinky tofu and led Cynthia toward the university snack stalls, while Gary worried about the smell.

Ch. 50My Rival Was a Cross-Dressing Pro

After leaving Rainbow University with research rewards and a stronger team, Gary headed to Erika’s perfume shop, where he encountered Ash and Brock. At the Celadon Gym, he discovered Ash disguised as a girl in an attempt to get a battle with Erika.

  • Gary accepted Rainbow University’s payment and supplies, declined Professor Rowan’s offer, and left with an Electrodriver and a seven-figure check.
  • Gary called Professor Oak, learned the Dragonite egg would hatch in a few days, and prepared to continue his journey with six Pokémon.
  • Gary met Ash and Brock outside Erika’s perfume shop and showed them his Rainbow Badge.

Ch. 52A scumbag and grinding experience

Gary planned to train his Pokémon near Celadon City and Fuchsia City, then visited Xiaoxue’s massage shop, where he exposed her boyfriend Xiao Xiang’s cruelty and had Charmeleon and Golduck beat him. After Xiaoxue called Officer Jenny and retaliated against Xiao Xiang, Gary left Celadon City and began ambushing Oddish with Charmeleon and Scizor to gain experience.

  • Gary rejected the P1 Fighting Tournament and decided to train around Grass- and Electric-type Pokémon gathering spots before challenging the Fuchsia Gym.
  • Erika told Gary that Xiaoxue had opened a massage shop, and Gary went to visit her.
  • Xiao Xiang insulted Gary and Xiaoxue, attacked Gary, and revealed that he had deceived Xiaoxue; Gary struck him and ordered Charmeleon and Golduck to beat him.
  • Xiaoxue called Officer Jenny and kicked Xiao Xiang in the groin as Gary left the shop.

  • Giovanni lured Zapdos into the Power Plant, but Zapdos defeated his Pokémon and left him badly injured.
  • Gary sensed Arcanine’s fear, followed a golden pillar of light into the factory, and absorbed Viridian Force from the rubble where Giovanni lay.
  • Gary found Giovanni unconscious, treated his injuries, and revived him with a Potion.
  • Giovanni told Gary that Zapdos had a divine domain and gave him a Team Rocket Leader Badge, a communicator, and his Trainer’s Notebook.
