His heart gave a sudden jolt. He had always been searching for differences between the white powder particles formed from different substances-for instance, whether there was some connection between the Green Apron Chef's tomato sauce and the Night-Walking Species-as well as the connection between white powder particles and contamination.
Only now did he realize he had overcomplicated the issue. He simply needed to put an equals sign between the two, rather than go through the complicated process of finding supporting evidence.
In other words, these particles of white powder were the "substance" into which all Contamination Persons disintegrated after death...
The flesh of any creature carrying contamination had the potential to become white powder particles. It only required certain "catalytic" conditions.
Sometimes, those catalytic conditions were extremely simple: excessive contamination was all it took.
Yet Art Students could actually absorb it and convert it into their own green aura!
"So could this be why Art Students can eat tomatoes?"

Because the contamination was tremendous.
