Background / History

Origin and lost memories

Lin Yi and Wei Liang originate from the same world, elsewhere in a parallel universe or dimension. Lin Yi only fully understands this after a flood of recovered memories near the end of the voyage. Those memories reveal that his adaptation and transcendence derive from the Root, and that an earlier project combined his traits with foundations supplied by A Jin, Amon, the Divine Artisan, the Butcher, and Supreme Heaven 763.

His apparent reason for entering Campus is to earn money for his grandmother’s treatment, but he initially struggles even to recognize that explanation. Later, he cannot remember why he came or recover ordinary memories of his family 8 76 385. Tian Bufan eventually reveals that the group entered Campus on a secret mission for the Authorities 542.

Boss repeatedly questions whether his development is genuine acquisition or the recovery of forgotten capabilities. By the time he obtains a Glazed Body, she concludes that he was already a Contamination Person of considerable standing and has been gathering his characteristics back together 292 613 624.

Enrollment and early exploration

Lin Yi receives his Student ID and Teaching Building Rules from the Head Teacher, who warns him never to surrender the ID. He secretly takes a discarded paper ball before finding Group B Class 2 and reuniting with Wei Liang 6.

Although initially dependent on rules and Wei Liang’s rescues, he becomes increasingly determined to investigate Campus. He worries persistently about Mao Feiyang after Mao enters the Stairwell, and later openly admits to Xu Shunkang that he wants to explore the school’s secrets 8 19 133.

His early discoveries concern Campus’s layered geography: buildings can disappear outside their designated areas, the Head Teacher’s office occupies an independent space, and supernatural exposure can distort his perception of elapsed time 39 62 173.

Angel contamination and Gymnasium training

At the abandoned Cafeteria-051 Streetlamp Pole, Lin Yi follows supernatural energy into a Wooded Belt containing ruined Chef sculptures and petrified Angel feathers. An eye opening inside a feather pulls him into another Layer, where voices demand that he worship the Angels 240.

Head Teacher 040 identifies an Angel’s mark on him and directs him to seek help at the Gymnasium. There, Boss investigates his unusual body and trains him with Li Huiyuan, using injury and recovery rather than ordinary conditioning to draw out his abilities 255 283 285 288.

Art Building, Clock Tower, and Library

Lao Mo accompanies Lin Yi into the Art Building and conceals his identity with a faceless disguise. During the journey, Lao Mo suspects that Lin Yi’s memories have been overwritten and forces his recovery to improve by draining his supernatural power 352 358 366.

Lin Yi reaches the Clock Tower, receives a Mystical Rune relic from Night Watchman 02, and later fights through an Alien Angel’s obstruction with the Steel Saw and his Admonition. At the Library, he restores his own appearance and identity, then helps the female Dorm Supervisor destroy an Impersonator and its remaining origin 394 405 408 409.

His repair of the City Wall gives Boss and the Gymnasium group time to withdraw. Boss subsequently sends him thanks through Li Huiyuan 430.

Mission preparations and Guixu

To draw threats away while Tian Bufan investigates upper classrooms, Lin Yi proposes creating a disposable Puppet. He constructs it from supernatural remains and operates it with his will across Layers 470 477 495.

Later, Lin Yi and Tian Bufan follow the Principal’s signal into the Gray Fog Sea. They locate Guixu, where lost First Apostles gather, and contact the Principal. The Principal says he has found the answer but can no longer return, repeatedly ordering them to abandon the summoning 668.

Final voyage and return

As Boss’s memories recover, Lin Yi recognizes her connection to the Law-Crafting Master and learns more about the Ark’s preparations. Boss explains that the growing population of Experience Students stabilizes Campus as an anchor point for travel through the Gray Fog Sea 736 738.

Lin Yi ultimately vanishes into the Time Stream to contain the Root. Boss and Li Huiyuan pursue him across dimensions, while Wei Liang invokes his true name and calls him home. Their attempt leaves Lin Yi’s return unresolved as the Time Stream shatters Wei Liang’s phantom opera house 764.

In the finale, the World Tree forms a wooden cocoon from which Lin Yi emerges alive. He retrieves Boss and Li Huiyuan from dimensional rifts, recognizes Supreme Heaven as “Xiao Bai,” and addresses Boss as “Xi’er” 765.

Appearance

• Early condition: His reflection becomes haggard shortly after enrollment, with faint darkness beneath his eyes 11.
• Supernatural manifestations: Golden flames burn in his eyes; physical exertion can surround him with sky-blue steam 173 268.
• Faceless disguise: Lao Mo’s softened scales cover his entire head, removing visible facial features and hair without obstructing breathing 352.

Personality

Lin Yi combines intense curiosity with practical caution. He admits wanting to uncover Campus’s secrets, but prefers preparation, deception, and retreat to confronting something his intuition says he cannot defeat. He can conceal information or adjust a story’s framing without discarding the details needed for an accurate assessment 133 278 464 524.

Trust strongly shapes his decisions. He initially rejects Li Huiyuan’s request to team up because they lack shared purpose and rapport, then explicitly limits the risks he will take for her. After surviving repeated dangers together, he calls her a friend and asks for unconditional trust during a hazardous escape 117 440 443.

His humor is frequently profane, self-deprecating, and shaped by manga, games, and superhero comparisons. He openly expresses sexual attraction, but also fears losing his humanity: noticing his own growing indifference to death alarms him, and he later asks whether his fading Student ID means he will become something nonhuman 183 250 386 524 629.
