If the passage through the Stairwell had simply turned into a subterranean stone path, he would certainly have noticed. But the transitions he had experienced had been so utterly seamless that he had slipped straight through them, only jolting awake when he reached the bottom.
It was as though some existence beyond common sense had pressed the "Ins" key and started typing, replacing the original information bit by bit. By the time the owner of the text noticed, the information before him had become something completely different.
