Appearance
- Face: Described as handsome, often with a smug or mischievous expression 314.
- Hair: Messy hair visible beneath his baseball cap 15.
- Signature accessory: Almost always wears a baseball cap, removing it for swimming. Its apparent ordinariness conceals a dimensional bomb 373 764.
- Abnormal changes: Lin Yi recalls periods when Wei Liang’s skin became bluish-gray and plaster-like, particularly around the Dormitory Building and Student Passage 692.
Personality
Wei Liang presents himself as a frightened, vulgar, attention-seeking slacker. He enjoys showing off, reads erotic manga, and frequently turns serious conversations into sexual jokes. His teasing of Lin Yi and Li Huiyuan brings liveliness to an otherwise lifeless classroom 29 437.
His apparent foolishness coexists with a deliberate refusal to learn dangerous information. He insists that knowing only the basic rules is safer than understanding supernatural mechanisms: knowledge might make him think about an entity and attract its attention. Even late in the story, he stops companions from telling him things he has not specifically asked to know 15 18 729.
Beneath this evasive exterior, Wei Liang is protective and calculating. He repeatedly interrupts Lin Yi’s dangerous thought spirals, secretly arranges an Impersonator’s death, and ultimately commits all his power to bringing Lin Yi home. When discussing the sacrifices behind their larger plan, his usual joking manner gives way to chilling seriousness 10 315 545 764.
Abilities & Skills
Unorthodox Tricks
“Unorthodox Tricks” describes Wei Liang’s seemingly accidental, precisely timed responses to supernatural danger. Lin Yi comes to regard these incidents as reliable survival methods rather than ordinary luck, although Wei Liang usually denies understanding what happened 243 273 314.
- Instinctive defense: When unexpectedly touched, he briefly assumes a fighting stance and emits a powerful aura before recognizing Lin Yi 52.
- Improbable evasion: Slides roughly a dozen meters across an unexplained puddle of oil before danger from the Wrathful Angel becomes apparent 273.
- Accidental counterattack: A sneeze makes him bend beneath Impersonator Li Kai’s attack; his accompanying backward movement knocks the attacker away 284.
- Improvised weapons: Accidentally shatters a Blue Apron Chef with a spinning tray 245.
- Unexplained victories: Xia Lian finds him unharmed in a changing room filled with fallen Green Apron Chefs. His explanation—that a dropped showerhead sprayed them—is met with disbelief 314.
- Suspected Angel kill: Lin Yi privately concludes that Wei Liang killed a Grinning Angel immediately after it emerged from Lin Yi’s shadow. The attribution is Lin Yi’s inference, not a directly witnessed fight 504.
Attention Control and Identity Anchoring
Wei Liang protects himself by controlling what he acknowledges and by grounding his thoughts in ordinary human concerns 15 243.
- Disconnection from eerie surroundings: Stares cross-eyed at a desk leg while thinking about unrelated subjects, preventing an eerie classmate’s influence from taking hold 15.
- Human-desire anchor: Uses lust and erotic manga to reinforce human identity. Lin Yi judges this safer than reciting personal information that hostile entities might overhear 243.
- Selective recognition: Treats the Forest of the Dead’s Steles as an invisible wall rather than acknowledging its supernatural nature, giving Lin Yi a method to imitate 531.
- Location anchoring: Grips a handrail and repeatedly affirms that he is on the Giant Dome’s second tier while shutting out his surroundings 318.
- Identity verification: Tests an apparent Lin Yi with a deliberately vulgar question, using the familiar response to confirm his identity 703.
Covert Planning and Guidance
Wei Liang can arrange outcomes through small actions that appear insignificant until their consequences become clear 545.
- Impersonator detection: Recognizes that “Song Rentou” is an Impersonator immediately upon entering school, despite Lin Yi being unable to detect anything abnormal about him 545.
- Indirect elimination: Uses a sheet from Lin Yi’s Notebook as part of a plot that traps and kills the false Song Rentou before he can leave Campus 545.
- Notebook handling: Tears blank sheets from Lin Yi’s dangerous Notebook without apparent difficulty; the purpose of the second sheet remains undisclosed in that scene 545.
- Technical hints: His remark that there are no real boundaries helps Lin Yi develop a new approach to manipulating material 476.
- Escape guidance: Leads companions along illuminated routes and helps Su Yao escape a dangerous Layer, allowing her to pull her chained teammates to safety 245 609.
Temporal Knowledge and Intervention
Wei Liang understands events across timelines, but his knowledge is not presented as unlimited foresight 655.
- Cross-timeline perspective: Discusses predetermined events and controllable factors with the Principal, while admitting that he cannot see humanity’s future 655.
- Repeated failures: The Layer inside his cap contains countless dying or mutilated versions of Wei Liang who describe unsuccessful attempts and recurring outcomes 606.
- Possible resistance to Angel: Lin Yi suspects that Wei Liang has secretly opposed Angel’s erosion of the timeline, potentially explaining his periods of plaster-like discoloration. This remains Lin Yi’s hypothesis in that passage 692.
- Calling across time: Sends his power and voice along the route opened by Boss and Li Huiyuan to reach Lin Yi within the Time Stream 764.
Fabrication and Stored Power
Wei Liang fabricates a replacement Xia Lian after the original has already sacrificed herself. The constructed body accumulates power for his eventual attempt to retrieve Lin Yi 764.
- The replacement shatters into blueprint-like fragments when its stored energy is released 764.
- That energy pours into Wei Liang before he activates the dimensional bomb concealed as his cap 764.
- The revelation recontextualizes the later “Xia Lian” accompanying him; she is not simply the original Athlete Student surviving unchanged 764.
Limits and Conditions
- Restricted final intervention: Tian Bufan describes Wei Liang as able to save Lin Yi once, with Wei Liang—not Lin Yi—deciding when to act 549.
- Ordinary actions remain available: The one-use restriction does not prevent other interventions. Tian Bufan compares him to a game character who retains normal cards despite possessing a limited-use skill 684.
- Strict activation conditions: Wei Liang explicitly says that his summoning conditions are harsh, not that he is invincible 720.
- Unresponsive states: Sometimes becomes cold, silent, or apparently “offline,” requiring others to guide or carry him through danger 172 533.
- Failed extraction: His full-power attempt cannot pull Lin Yi out of the Time Stream; the stream destroys the phantom opera house and erases his projected figure 764.
Equipment & Items
- Baseball Cap — Conceals an intricately folded Layer containing countless versions of Wei Liang. Later unfolds into a vast mystical-rune matrix, revealing itself as a compressed dimensional bomb 606 764.
- Student ID — Used for meals, sign-ins, and dormitory access. Wei Liang favors an exaggerated, rapid-swiping technique 29 174 588.
- Erotic manga — Both a favorite pastime and a tool for distracting attention from supernatural danger and anchoring human desires 15 116 243.
- Sheets from Lin Yi’s Notebook — Takes two sheets at different times. One is confirmed to have supported the scheme against the false Song Rentou 545.
- Raincoats — Brings raincoats for the journey toward the Gymnasium 40.
History
Returning Experience Student
Wei Liang accompanies Lin Yi into the Campus with knowledge from a previous visit. Early on, Lin Yi stops him from approaching a supposed teacher whose name badge is only drawn on paper; Wei Liang recognizes the possible involvement of Art Teachers and Art Students 2 40.
During their first classroom ordeals, Wei Liang’s refusal to overthink danger repeatedly proves useful. His desk-leg fixation and preference for manga help Lin Yi recognize ways to break supernatural influence without engaging directly with it 10 15 18.
The pair continue through the Cafeteria, outdoor paths, and Dormitory Building together. They escape anomalous chefs and reach Room 1414, although Wei Liang narrowly avoids shadowy creatures before entering 29 54 73.
Gymnasium Encounters
Wei Liang initially rejects Lin Yi’s suggestion that he join Swimming Class, but later returns from the Swimming Hall and survives Impersonator Li Kai’s attack through an apparently accidental counter 186 284.
Boss then prevents him from leaving the Gymnastics Hall and orders him to train. She subsequently assigns Xia Lian to drill him, admitting that she cannot determine whether he is genuinely powerless or hiding his abilities exceptionally well 284 303.
Xia Lian’s discovery of fallen Green Apron Chefs around an unharmed Wei Liang deepens those suspicions. Wei Liang insists that he merely dropped a showerhead, while Lin Yi treats the episode as another example of his Unorthodox Tricks 314 315.
Investigations into His Identity
Mountain Man questions Wei Liang about Song Rentou’s disappearance and asks whether he was on Campus in late spring or early summer of Year X999. Wei Liang denies being old enough, while Mountain Man openly challenges whether he is truly Wei Liang 437 438.
Mountain Man also warns Head Teacher 040 that Wei Liang may not be human. Her investigation eventually locates his May 6 registration under student ID X0230506096, but does not resolve the suspicions 456.
Later, Wei Liang’s fragmented sleep-talk reveals that he recognized the false Song Rentou and helped arrange his death. Lin Yi realizes that the operation unfolded almost invisibly under his own observation 545.
Final Safeguard and the Countless Wei Liangs
Before the Art Building operation, Tian Bufan identifies Wei Liang as Lin Yi’s final safety lock. He is to remain near the closest streetlamp, providing a location Lin Yi can sense as an escape reference and retaining one decisive rescue opportunity 549.
Lin Yi later unfolds the Layer hidden in Wei Liang’s cap and discovers countless damaged versions of him. Their conflicting accounts describe repeated failures and disagree over whether Boss must live or die. Recalling Tian Bufan’s warning, Lin Yi suspects that some beings dismissed as Impersonator Wei Liangs may instead be real versions lost during earlier loops 606.
Older Connections
In a witnessed meeting, Wei Liang speaks with the Principal as a longstanding acquaintance and discusses the consequences of the Principal’s intended departure. He requests that the Bronze Key and Ouroboros Ring be left with the Night Watchman, along with access to the complete Campus plans. The Principal supplies the plans titled Layer Anchor Points and Architectural Design Between Black Moon Outpost and S City University 655.
Memory fragments also place Wei Liang among the young First Apostles. They address him familiarly as “Uncle Liangzi,” and he verifies Lin Yi’s identity before participating in discussions about their projects 703.
Attempt to Bring Lin Yi Home
After Lin Yi enters the Time Stream to contain the Root, Wei Liang explains that Lin Yi has become part of the timeline. He also acknowledges that the sacrifice arose from discussions dating back to the Black Fog Era 764.
Li Huiyuan and Boss nevertheless pursue Lin Yi across dimensions. Wei Liang releases the power accumulated in the fabricated Xia Lian, unfolds his cap into a dimensional bomb, and detonates himself to send his strength along their route. Amon and the Astrology Master identify him as the Time Gambler, who wagered humanity’s survival against the Root 764.
Invoking the name Celestial Worthy Wei Liang of Fortune and Life, he calls Lin Yi home alongside countless versions of himself in a phantom opera house. The Time Stream shatters the structure and erases his figure; afterward, the returning curse of time annihilates his body aboard the Layer Ark 764 765.
Wei Liang nevertheless appears alive in the finale. When Lin Yi jokes about his plans, Wei Liang retorts that he dug Lin Yi out of the World Tree 765.
