Background / History
In his previous life, Fang Yang was an ordinary office worker whose exceptional looks led his boss to suspect an affair with the boss’s wife. After being repeatedly mistreated over the accusation, Fang Yang actually began the affair. He eventually died after exhausting himself through work and his private life 1.
He transmigrated into the Blood Rain Demon Venerable’s body one day before the opening chapter. His predecessor had died from cultivation deviation during a month of secluded cultivation. Fang Yang inherited neither the man’s memories nor his internal energy, leaving him dependent on a stack of diaries to reconstruct his identity 1.
The predecessor had debuted at twenty and achieved overwhelming dominance within fifteen years. His reputation for slaughter, hostile disciples, and numerous enemies made revealing Fang Yang’s weakness potentially fatal. Fang Yang therefore began impersonating the Demon Venerable while searching for a faster way to rebuild his strength 1 2 8.
The diaries were particularly misleading about sexual relationships. Han Lingxuan knew that the original Demon Venerable suffered psychological impotence and hostility toward women; the opening chapter also foreshadows Fang Yang discovering years later that the diary’s romantic boasts were fantasies 1 3.
Appearance
- Face: Exceptionally handsome, with a cold, stern expression when maintaining his Demon Venerable persona 4 9.
- Build: Tall and straight-backed, with broad arms 35 49.
- Hair: Black, often described streaming in the wind during public displays of power 35 36.
- Clothing: Black robes, including a robe woven from celestial silkworm silk 2 6.
- Bearing: Projects disdainful authority and an oppressive killing aura; the Profound Heaven Strategy later makes his presence seem mysterious and unfathomable 2 11.
Personality
Fang Yang’s strongest survival traits are acting ability, quick thinking, and composure under pressure. He carefully practices his predecessor’s expressions and mannerisms, concealing fear behind an icy exterior. When Ye Qinghong’s sword threatens him, his frozen expression is mistaken for confidence rather than shock 2 6 8.
He is pragmatic but initially lacks the original Demon Venerable’s ruthlessness. He recognizes that maintaining the impersonation forces him to act against his conscience, yet considers exposure even more dangerous. He also prefers manipulating expectations to relying entirely on brute force 3 8 44.
His willingness to use violence increases when the cult challenges his authority. After learning that conspirators offered only a basic cultivation manual to secure a test of his condition, he takes the scheme as a personal humiliation. By Zhang Sheng’s death, he explicitly regards himself and the Demon Venerable identity as one 29 38.
Although observant about threats, Fang Yang repeatedly misreads Han Lingxuan’s intentions. He interprets her assassination attempts and fearful reactions as affection or eagerness, while she mistakes his attraction for evidence of cultivation deviation 4 13 19 42.
Abilities & Skills
Impersonation and Psychological Manipulation
Fang Yang maintains his position by reproducing the Demon Venerable’s behavior and exploiting the fear his predecessor left behind 2 8.
- Practices a domineering posture, cold expressions, and a lustful gaze using the diaries as reference 2.
- Uses unconventional punishment to unsettle Ye Qinghong without exposing his missing cultivation 7 8.
- Manipulates a Soul-Testing Stone and sends it back to the conspirators to encourage them to attack 30.
- Gives Ye Qinghong the complete God-Shocking Sword Technique after punishment, hoping to reduce hostility and earn more system draws 45.
- Remains vulnerable to sustained probing because convincing behavior cannot replace genuine strength indefinitely 8 44.
Retained Physical Tempering
The predecessor’s cultivation dissipated, but the body’s conditioning survived 3.
- Can easily overpower an ordinary servant without internal energy 3.
- Uses physical strength to leap directly toward Han Lingxuan 4.
- Retains the foundation and cultivation talent of a body that previously reached the Dharmakaya Realm 22.
Heavenly Demon Art
Fang Yang attempts to rebuild his cultivation through the art practiced by the original Blood Rain Demon Venerable 8.
- Estimates that ordinary cultivation could restore the predecessor’s strength in roughly ten years—far too slowly to survive his immediate enemies 8.
- Benefits from the Demon Venerable’s treasury, medicinal pills, cultivation methods, and existing bodily foundation 22.
- Reaches third-rank expert strength, but remains far below the power his followers believe he possesses 44.
Profound Heaven Strategy
An incomplete upper-grade Heaven Tier cultivation technique obtained through a matchmaking-point draw 9.
- Conceals the user’s aura and blocks divination arts 9.
- Gives movements and attacks an intimidating Heavenly Dao presence 9 16.
- Can trigger lightning, radiant clouds, and other heaven-and-earth phenomena 9 27 41.
- Allows weak attacks to appear vastly more powerful: one spectacular palm strike leaves only a single crack in stone 27.
- Causes followers—and later Ye Qinghong—to overestimate Fang Yang’s cultivation 11 41 44.
Matchmaker System
Fang Yang’s cheat uses red threads to bind him to designated Silk Binders, including Han Lingxuan and Ye Qinghong. He obtains matchmaking points through these connections and spends them on treasure-chest draws 8 9.
- Reveals a bound person’s cultivation, constitution, and affection score 9.
- Initially records Han Lingxuan’s affection as −30, described as hatred to the marrow 9.
- Can award cultivation techniques, temporary combat cards, charm enhancements, and skills drawn from a Silk Binder’s frequent activities 9 15 28.
- Produces erratic rewards; even a guaranteed draw can yield a hobby skill rather than useful combat power 28.
- Includes a persistent lewd narrator whose suggestions Fang Yang frequently rejects or blocks out 2 4 7 45.
Temporary Peak Combat Power
The system’s combat cards let Fang Yang briefly bridge the gap between his real cultivation and his assumed identity 15 28.
- Demon Venerable Peak Experience Card: Grants ten minutes of the predecessor’s peak power, including a four-leaf Dharma Body 28 36.
- Dharma Body applications: Seizes and crushes enemies, overwhelms the rebels, and strips cultivation from protectors 36 38 39.
- Ye Qinghong’s Peak God-Shocking Sword Use Card: Grants ten minutes of peak combat power and contains the complete God-Shocking Sword Technique 15.
- Flash of Astonishing Grace: Combines the complete sword art with four-leaf Dharmakaya power, destroying a hidden shadow and severing the waterfall behind the pavilion 41.
- Limits: Overusing his first Demon Venerable Card makes Fang Yang convulse and cough blood. He subsequently has only one such card left 41 44.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Demon Venerable’s diaries — His main source of information about his predecessor; unreliable concerning romantic and sexual exploits 1 3.
- Cultivation jade slips and treasury — Include the Heavenly Demon Art, God-Shocking Sword, and Desire Maiden Art, alongside medicinal resources 8 22.
- Azure Shadow Sword — Temporarily summons and wields Ye Qinghong’s sword, then returns it. The sword later seeks his attention on its own 39 43 44.
- Bell of All Life — Summons the cult’s members; Fang Yang uses it to gather rebels and later announce that the Demon Venerable Pavilion is forbidden ground 31 32 42.
- Soul-Testing Stone — Rare jade capable of detecting severe soul damage. Fang Yang turns it pitch-black before returning it as bait for the conspirators 30.
- Charm Card — A one-day enhancement affecting attraction regardless of species or gender; used during his public suppression of the rebellion 28 40 42.
- Spring Passion Hall booklet and pills — Obtained to sustain his performance during encounters with Han Lingxuan; his pill consumption escalates over successive nights 16 19 23 25.
- Hobby skill cards — Draws Han Lingxuan’s advanced underwear-washing, rubber-band-jumping, bathing-and-bubble-blowing, and sandbag-tossing skills 9 28.
Relationships
- Han Lingxuan — The Southern Pacifying King’s Princess Consort and one of his Silk Binders. Abducted by his predecessor, she repeatedly attempts to seduce and assassinate him; Fang Yang instead tries to increase her affection for system rewards 3 9 15 19.
- Ye Qinghong — Eldest disciple, Sword Hall master, and Silk Binder. Returns intending to kill the weakened Demon Venerable. Fang Yang alternates intimidation, humiliating punishment, and a gift of the complete sword technique to manage the hostility 2 6 8 45.
- Lian Yue — Fourth disciple and founder of Spring Passion Hall. Fang Yang obtains the hall’s latest booklet through a subordinate 16.
- Zhang Sheng — One of the Eight Great Protectors and leader of the rebellion. Fang Yang lures him into exposing himself, then kills him rather than accepting his surrender 31 37 38.
- Huang Fuling — Protector whose infatuation intensifies during Fang Yang’s display of power. After being punished for failing to defend him, she enters his bedchamber and professes devotion; Fang Yang ultimately strikes her in the chest 38 41 48 50.
- Yuan Heng — Protector punished for standing aside during the rebellion. Fang Yang reduces him from great grandmaster to grandmaster; Huang Fuling’s attraction to Fang Yang further enrages him 38 41.
- White Bone Elder — Feigns submission while harboring murderous intent. Fang Yang detects the threat and crushes him with his Dharma Body 39.
- Ling’er — Han Lingxuan’s maid. Fang Yang knows of her from the diaries but initially cannot explain why she remains unseen during his repeated courtyard visits 26.
