Location & Layout

  • Approach: A towering flight of steps leads toward the building. During Zhang Sheng’s rebellion, cult members assemble beneath these steps and watch the confrontation above 34.
  • Upper area: The Bell of All Life is situated overhead, at the pavilion’s top. Fang Yang stands atop it while addressing the assembled cult 31 32 35.
  • Rear landscape: A waterfall cascades behind the pavilion. Fang Yang’s sword strike severs it and leaves a scar more than a dozen zhang long across the cliff 41.

Great Hall

Feature Description
Lighting The hall is cold, gloomy, and normally shrouded in darkness, with flickering candles and intermittent chill drafts 16 31.
Entrance doors The doors weigh a thousand pounds. When Fang Yang opens them during the rebellion, the pavilion is described as receiving daylight for the first time in over a decade 32.
Floor Polished mountain stone in multiple colors; Ye Qinghong follows a familiar route of blue stone slabs through the hall 43.
Throne steps Nine black-jade steps lead to the throne, with a bloody stench rising from them 16.
Throne An enormous throne dominates the hall, allowing the Demon Venerable to receive visitors from above the steps 16 31 43.

Sleeping Palace

  • Interior: A vast, sparsely furnished chamber with cold drafts and a gloomy atmosphere 48.
  • Skull lamps: Oil lamps made from the skulls of the Demon Venerable’s enemies stand in its four corners as trophies 48.
  • Dragon bed: A valuable bed made entirely from black jade occupies the innermost area. It remains cool in summer and warm in winter 48.
  • Restrictions: The bedchamber is treated as forbidden ground even within the restricted pavilion. Huang Fuling cites a claim that no woman had previously been allowed inside 48 49.

Facilities & Mechanisms

Bell of All Life

  • Its toll carries throughout the Blood Rain Cult, reaching the inner court, outer court, and rear mountain 32.
  • Every cult member is required to come to the pavilion when it rings 32.
  • Fang Yang activates it by directing astral wind toward the pavilion’s top, turning Zhang Sheng’s private assassination attempt into a public confrontation 32.

Icy-Wind Mechanism

  • An installed mechanism allows the user to summon and control icy wind inside the great hall with a slight application of astral energy 16.
  • Fang Yang uses it to carry a written summons outside the building 16.
  • The wind also contributes to the hall’s frightening atmosphere, howling around visitors and intensifying their fear of the throne’s occupant 16.

Cultivation Resources & Treasury

  • Martial texts: Jade slips containing the Heavenly Demon Art, God-Shocking Sword, and Desire Maiden Art are kept in the Demon Venerable’s quarters. Texts valuable enough to provoke bloodshed elsewhere are left gathering dust there 8.
  • Cultivation supplies: Fang Yang has access to his predecessor’s treasury, including cultivation methods and medicinal pills, while rebuilding his strength in the pavilion 22.
  • Target of rebellion: The treasury’s reputed wealth becomes a major incentive for cult members to attack Fang Yang 36.

Access & Reputation

  • Restricted perimeter: No one may enter within a hundred meters of the pavilion without the Demon Venerable’s permission. Unauthorized entry carries the penalty of death 31.
  • Guards: Cultists guard the entrance. A would-be infiltrator complains that the numerous daytime guards make entry dangerous 11 26.
  • Fatal reputation: It is said that nine out of ten people who enter never leave, instead being buried beneath the steps to “guard” the throne 16.
  • Abducted women: Huang Fuling recalls that, among the beauties abducted by the original Demon Venerable, only the Princess Consort of the Southern Pacifying King had walked out of the pavilion 35.
  • Reaffirmed prohibition: After suppressing the rebellion, Fang Yang declares the pavilion forbidden ground again and dismisses everyone except Ye Qinghong 42.

History

Fang Yang’s Cultivation & the Investigation Plot

Fang Yang uses the pavilion to study his predecessor’s martial texts and seek a way to survive the approaching Demon Gate Grand Banquet. His imposing aura convinces the entrance guards that he may have achieved a breakthrough. Later, practicing the Heavenly Demon Art inside the pavilion, he genuinely rebuilds his cultivation to the third-rank level in two days 8 11 22.

Meanwhile, conspirators seek proof that the Demon Venerable has been gravely injured. The dangerous task of infiltrating the pavilion is passed down through several subordinates until an outer disciple is forced to undertake it. Brought wounded into the hall, the disciple confesses his mission. Fang Yang then sends him back with a deliberately blackened Soul-Testing Stone, encouraging the conspirators to believe he is vulnerable 18 26 29 30.

Zhang Sheng’s Rebellion

Zhang Sheng enters the pavilion without permission and confronts Fang Yang at the throne. Rather than keep the encounter private, Fang Yang rings the Bell of All Life and opens the doors to the approaching cult members. The confrontation moves to the pavilion’s top, where Fang Yang feigns weakness to draw out attackers 31 32 34 36.

Using a Demon Venerable Card, Fang Yang manifests a four-leaf dharmakaya and slaughters those who attack. Corpses and blood cover the area outside the pavilion; Zhang Sheng and his followers are killed, while other protectors are punished. A spirit subsequently emerges from a pearl within White Bone Elder’s corpse, but Fang Yang destroys it with the God-Shocking Sword, also cutting through the waterfall behind the building 36 37 38 40 41.

Aftermath & Bedchamber Intrusion

After restoring the entry prohibition, Fang Yang receives Ye Qinghong in the closed great hall and returns the Azure Shadow Sword. He later gives the disciple the complete God-Shocking Sword Technique 42 43 45.

Huang Fuling subsequently sneaks into the sleeping palace and hides in Fang Yang’s bed. He initially mistakes her for the Princess Consort. Once her identity is exposed, he reminds her that entering the pavilion without permission is punishable; she declares herself willing to accept punishment to remain with him 48 49 50.
