Background / History
Survival of the Sword-Qi Conflict
Yue Buqun belonged to Mount Hua’s Qi Branch and survived the Sword-Qi Conflict despite having his abdomen sliced open. The conflict devastated the sect’s personnel and martial inheritance; the Sword Branch burned its library, and only three of the Mount Hua Nine Arts remained: Violet Mist Divine Skill, Mount Hua Internal Skill, and Primal Chaos Skill 3 29.
After his Houtian breakthrough, the surviving martial brothers accepted him as sect leader. They divided their efforts between a visible sect under Yue Buqun and a hidden network in the Qinling Mountains, where injured or less-talented survivors recruited and trained village children. He allowed those brothers to take Mount Hua’s remaining medicinal supplies and money, leaving himself and Ning Zhongze to sustain the public sect 23 40 42.
Since his master’s death, Yue Buqun had regarded Mount Hua’s revival as his personal responsibility. More than twenty years of effort brought little visible hope, while frequent travel on sect business left him insufficient time to supervise his disciples 11 28 42.
Supporting Tian Hao
Yue Buqun initially valued Tian Hao as a future master craftsman rather than a fighter. Despite Tian Hao’s poor cultivation aptitude, he expected the disciple’s diligence and blacksmithing ability to provide Mount Hua with divine Black Iron weapons 1 7.
He traded an internal cultivation method for the Horizontal Crab Iron Shirt manual and obtained its accompanying A San Divine Oil for Tian Hao. His support also included checking for hidden training injuries and intervening when Tian Hao’s epiphany left him dangerously depleted; afterward, he required three days of recuperation 3 11 28 29.
Tian Hao’s dictionary and phonetic-spelling project gave Yue Buqun enough confidence in Mount Hua’s prospects to reconnect with the secluded martial brothers. After witnessing Tian Hao’s sudden enlightenment, he began treating him as his true heir and would have been willing to pass him the sect leadership if Tian Hao wanted it 29.
Guan Family Treasure and Mount Hua Academy
Following Tian Hao’s account of Guan Family Fort’s destruction, Yue Buqun led the recovery of its hidden fortune. The expedition uncovered more than ten million taels of silver, meteoric-iron saber blanks, evidence of a century-long arms trade with the steppe peoples, and the remains of enslaved workers murdered to conceal the operation 18 22 23.
He reserved all the gold and three million taels of silver for Mount Hua Academy and its future expenses. The remaining silver was assigned to medicinal supplies, with orders to spend it within six months. His group also secured the fort’s concealed Yellow River transport route and stripped the underground workshop of usable resources, including its iron rails 23 24 27.
Afterward, Yue Buqun supervised the academy’s construction and protected Ru Zhigang. The dictionary’s delivery to the capital prompted the emperor to send Yu Huatian and Western Depot personnel to guard the imperial tutor 27 29.
Rebuilding Mount Hua’s Martial Strength
Yue Buqun hoped to recover the Sunflower Manual to complete ancestor Yue Su’s unfinished work: elevating Violet Mist Divine Skill into a Xiantian Realm art. Unable to challenge the Sun-Moon Demon Cult directly, he considered the Lin family’s related Evil-Warding Sword Manual a more attainable alternative, while remaining wary of any secret practitioner within the family 3 12 29.
He supplied Tian Hao with the Primal Chaos Skill and Violet Mist manuals, recalled the hidden disciples, and helped refine the Self-Hypnosis Method over a month. Combining accelerated external training with Black Iron weapons offered a way for elders at the peak of the Inner Qi Realm to contend with Houtian opponents 30 31.
With medicinal supplies secured, Yue Buqun envisioned ten or twenty years of secluded development and a force of more than ten thousand disciples. Before that withdrawal, Mount Hua still intended to pursue the Evil-Warding Sword Manual and Putian Shaolin’s accumulated martial legacy 40.
Linghu Chong’s Discipline
Linghu Chong’s hostility toward Tian Hao repeatedly undermined Yue Buqun’s confidence in his intended successor. Yue Buqun condemned attacks between fellow disciples, punished both Linghu Chong and Lu Dayou with confinement on Reflection Cliff, and regretted having neglected their instruction 7 15 16.
Linghu Chong’s Houtian breakthrough briefly renewed plans to transmit Violet Mist Divine Skill and establish him as Mount Hua’s young sect leader. Those hopes collapsed when Yue Buqun learned that he had visited Fleeting Years and attacked Tian Hao to protect White Bear. Yue Buqun struck him and ordered him to remain on Reflection Cliff until explicitly released 40 41 42.
Demon Cult Threat
After Tian Hao warned that Fleeting Years’ top courtesan might be Dongfang Bubai, Yue Buqun ordered Mount Hua to conceal its Black Iron production, move equipment inside the mountain, and avoid a direct confrontation. He also considered Tian Hao’s suggestion that the ancestors’ coffins might contain lost martial teachings 42 43.
During the subsequent Demon Cult incursion, Yue Buqun went to Reflection Cliff to retrieve Linghu Chong. He, Ning Zhongze, and Linghu Chong were caught fighting black-clad attackers while Feng Qingyang confronted Dongfang Bubai nearby. Tian Hao broke through the encirclement to reach them, and the cult failed to capture the group 49 50.
Appearance
- Middle-aged at his introduction, though later passages describe his face as aged 1 14.
- Long beard, which he frequently strokes while explaining martial principles or reflecting on sect affairs 1 12 29.
- Purple qi across his face when anger involuntarily stirs his Violet Mist true qi 15.
Personality
Yue Buqun is devoted to Mount Hua’s survival and restoration. He economizes when resources are scarce, invests heavily in disciples who can advance the sect, and measures prospective leaders by their judgment and ability to maintain unity—not merely their martial talent 1 7 23.
His treatment of Tian Hao combines practical investment with genuine concern. He praises diligence despite poor aptitude, obtains suitable training methods, and checks that rapid progress has not caused hidden injuries. Tian Hao explicitly judges him worthy of the title “Gentleman Sword” at this stage of the story 3 7 11 12.
He is stern about jealousy, infighting, and conduct that threatens the sect or his daughter. Linghu Chong’s repeated defiance provokes violent anger, but their nearly twenty years of familial affection restrain him from imposing a fatal punishment 15 41 42.
He is also cautious and pragmatic. He waits for both disciples’ accounts before judging the Desert North Duo incident, recognizes when Shaolin or the Demon Cult is too powerful to confront, and accepts turning Lao Denuo into a source of false intelligence rather than killing him 30 31 41 43.
Abilities & Skills
Violet Mist Divine Skill
Mount Hua’s strongest surviving internal art forms the foundation of Yue Buqun’s cultivation 3 12.
- His mastery is close to the art’s pinnacle, earning him a place among Southern Ming’s ten foremost orthodox experts 3.
- Its balanced, gentle nature provides comprehensive capabilities but less killing power; he remains below leading rivals in combat despite comparable cultivation 3.
- The art reaches only Houtian perfection and cannot improve innate aptitude 12.
- Yue Buqun seeks the Sunflower Manual to extend it into a Xiantian Realm inheritance 12 29.
Swordsmanship and True Qi
- Yangwu Sword Technique: Reached great mastery through scholarly instruction from Ru Zhigang 16.
- Sword-qi: Reinforces his longsword with acquired true qi; with the other Mount Hua experts, cuts through a stone door a full zhang thick 24.
- True-qi control: Operates concealed chamber mechanisms and dispels the hostile fist force and internal qi left inside Tian Hao 3 15 42.
Embrace Origin Force
An external martial art that Yue Buqun cultivates alongside his internal skills 40.
- Uses the Embrace Origin Guarding the One mental state to accelerate training 40.
- Reaches major mastery through an insight and demonstrates explosive striking force 40.
- Helps develop the Self-Hypnosis Method that makes the required mental state accessible to other practitioners 31.
Martial Instruction and Sect Administration
- Explains innate aptitude, martial heart methods, and the two paths toward perfected martial arts 12 31 45.
- Shares his Violet Mist heart-method insights with Tian Hao, while admitting that he himself has no hope of comprehending legendary martial will 31.
- Coordinates hidden disciples, treasure recovery, medicinal procurement, academy construction, and defensive secrecy 23 27 30 43.
- Orders twenty-jin steel practice swords so the elders can adapt before receiving heavier Black Iron weapons 46.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longsword — Channels acquired true qi and sword-qi through it 24.
- Black Iron longsword — One of the forty weapons forged by Tian Hao is allocated to Yue Buqun. Black Iron concentrates a Houtian expert’s sword-qi and is exceptionally sharp and durable 48.
- Violet Mist Manual — Kept in a concealed compartment in the Quiet Chamber; records the Sunflower Manual as the next step beyond Violet Mist 3.
- Primal Chaos Skill manual — Stored among Mount Hua’s surviving supreme arts and provided to Tian Hao for research 30.
Relationships
- Ning Zhongze — Wife and junior martial sister; shares the burden of sustaining Mount Hua and helps develop the Self-Hypnosis Method 1 31 42.
- Yue Lingshan — Daughter; he rebukes her jealousy toward Tian Hao and authorizes stricter training under him 11 12.
- Tian Hao — Disciple, Black Iron smith, and eventual preferred heir; Yue Buqun places increasing trust in his judgment, comprehension, and plans for Mount Hua 7 29 31.
- Linghu Chong — Eldest disciple, raised like a son and initially intended as successor and son-in-law; repeated violations of sect rules severely damage Yue Buqun’s trust 7 41 42.
- Ru Zhigang — Scholarly teacher and academy collaborator; helps Yue Buqun master Yangwu Sword Technique and advises him on his disciples’ suitability for leadership 16 27.
- Lao Denuo — Disciple and known Mount Song infiltrator; spared at Tian Hao’s request, with responsibility for securing his allegiance delegated to Tian Hao 30 31.
- Li Buli and Zhao Bulu — Fellow Qi Branch survivors who support the hidden sect network, disciple mobilization, and security decisions 23 29 30 42.
- Yang Jian and Yang Chan — Children accepted into Mount Hua after Tian Hao exposes the Desert North Duo’s crimes against their family 42.
- Yu Huatian — Imperial protector of Ru Zhigang; Yue Buqun considers his presence beneficial and expects him not to interfere with Mount Hua’s development 29.
- Dongfang Bubai — Demon Cult leader and overwhelming threat; her strength makes reclaiming the Sunflower Manual or confronting the cult directly impractical 12 42 43.
