Background / History
Yue Buqun and Ning Zhongze raised Linghu Chong as their own son for nearly twenty years. He grew up alongside their daughter, Yue Lingshan, and became Mount Hua’s chief disciple and expected future leader 17 22 41.
Before his confrontation with Tian Hao, Linghu Chong spent half a year escorting Ru Zhigang. Yue Buqun arranged the assignment hoping that Ru would accept him as a student, giving Mount Hua protection through the imperial tutor’s reputation. Ru instructed him throughout the journey but ultimately judged his temperament unsuitable for scholarly study or leadership 15 16.
Appearance
- Described as handsome and dashing; Dongfang Bubai selects him from the audience at Fleeting Years after her performance 33 34.
Personality
Linghu Chong is quick-witted and exceptionally gifted in martial arts, but his early cultivation lacks the diligence expected of someone with his potential. Lao Denuo believes he could already have reached the Houtian Realm had he trained more seriously. He later intensifies his practice alongside the other disciples as Tian Hao’s training drive spreads through Mount Hua 5 27.
His personal sense of chivalry makes him protective of people he regards as friends. He confronts Tian Hao over Lu Dayou’s injuries and later intervenes to save White Bear, believing both actions justified. His attachment to White Bear remains so strong that he rejects the Desert North Duo’s cannibalism charges as a frame-up, even after their capture and execution 14 33 39.
He also loves wine intensely. At Fleeting Years, the promise of the city’s finest wine persuades him to accept Dongfang Bubai’s invitation upstairs. When criticized, he insists that he visited only to drink and had no improper intentions 22 33 41.
His hostility toward Tian Hao becomes increasingly defiant. He believes his master and mistress have been deceived, refuses to acknowledge wrongdoing, and eventually organizes opposition within the sect. Tian Hao interprets this behavior as placing personal convictions above sect responsibilities; Ru Zhigang separately concludes that Linghu Chong possesses petty cleverness rather than the judgment needed to lead 15 16 17 47.
Abilities & Skills
Mount Hua Swordsmanship
Linghu Chong is initially described as the strongest Mount Hua disciple and one of the finest martial artists of Southern Ming’s younger generation. Most of his combat proficiency lies in swordsmanship 14.
- Phoenix Comes in Splendor: Uses this lethal thrust as his opening attack against Tian Hao 14.
- Precision and adaptation: Quickly identifies a counter to Tian Hao’s sweeping greatsword attacks, striking the blade’s flat to stop its momentum 14.
- Weapon limitation: His refined-steel sword snaps under the combined strain of his internal qi and Tian Hao’s force. Abandoning swordplay for close combat exposes him to Tian Hao’s grappling 14.
Internal Cultivation and Lightness Skills
- Channels internal qi into his blade to sharpen its attacks and through his body for protection 14.
- Uses lightness movement to cross thirty feet almost instantly during his duel with Tian Hao 14.
- Reaches the Houtian Realm through major mastery of the Mount Hua Heart Method and medicinal support 40.
- Yue Buqun considers teaching him the Violet Mist Divine Skill, but the supplied chapters do not confirm that he receives it 40 41 42.
Jade-Breaking Fist
- Practiced to minor mastery; backed by abundant internal qi, it delivers a punch that sends damaging force into Tian Hao’s chest and abdomen 14.
- Proves ineffective once Tian Hao captures his wrist and repeatedly slams him into the ground 14.
Reflection Cliff Sword Techniques
- Discovers a concealed cave accidentally while venting his frustration through sword practice 47.
- Learns refined versions of Mount Hua Swordsmanship, Jade Maiden Nineteen Swords, and other lost Five Mountains sword techniques 47.
- Memorizes counter-techniques capable of defeating the five sects’ sword arts, then removes them with sword-qi to prevent their dissemination 47.
Chongling Swordsmanship
- Co-created with Yue Lingshan 45.
- Ning Zhongze dismisses it as a few flawed sword moves without an accompanying formula, rather than a complete sword art 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Refined-steel longsword: His two-and-a-half-foot sword breaks while blocking Tian Hao’s greatsword during their first duel 14.
- Hundred-forged steel longsword: Still his weapon after Tian Hao finishes forty black iron swords for other Mount Hua members 48.
- Denied black iron sword: Tian Hao refuses to forge one for him because he regards Linghu Chong as an enemy. His stated justification—that Linghu Chong should pursue swordless swordsmanship—is explicitly a bluff 48.
Relationships
- Yue Buqun — Master and parental figure who initially intends him to succeed Mount Hua’s leadership. Repeated disputes lead to physical reprimands and confinement at Reflection Cliff 7 17 42.
- Ning Zhongze — Master’s wife and parental figure. Initially favors him as Yue Lingshan’s future husband, but his drinking and conduct make her reconsider 22 41.
- Yue Lingshan — Childhood sweetheart and fellow disciple. They share mutual affection and create Chongling Swordsmanship together; she also advocates for him to receive better weapons 2 22 45 48.
- Lu Dayou — Close ally who supports him against Tian Hao, investigates Tian Hao’s origins, and joins his plan to recruit sympathetic disciples 15 39 47.
- Tian Hao — Junior disciple and persistent adversary. Linghu Chong regards him as a danger to Mount Hua, while Tian Hao considers Linghu Chong an irresponsible potential leader 4 15 47.
- Ru Zhigang — Instructor whom he escorts for half a year. Linghu Chong attacks Ru’s conduct and teachings; Ru subsequently excludes him from Mount Hua’s larger undertaking 15 16.
- White Bear — Drinking companion whom he calls “Brother Bai.” Linghu Chong saves him from Tian Hao and mourns his execution, refusing to accept the charges against him 33 39.
- Dongfang Bubai / Dongfang Bai — Meets him while posing as a courtesan at Fleeting Years. She finds him appealing and invites him for wine, though Tian Hao interrupts the encounter 33 34.
- Yang Jian — Resents Linghu Chong for defending the Desert North Duo, who murdered members of his family 42.

Fleeting Years and the Desert North Duo
- Accepts Dongfang Bubai’s invitation for wine, prompting Tian Hao to rebuke and slap him publicly 33.
- Draws his sword against Tian Hao to protect White Bear after White Bear attempts a killing strike 33.

Demon Cult Confrontation
- Yue Buqun goes to Reflection Cliff to bring him back before the Mount Hua party encounters the Demon Cult 49.
- During Tian Hao’s rescue of the party, Tian Hao gives Tong Baixiong Linghu Chong’s name. Linghu Chong protests, while Tong accepts the false identification and vows to remember it 50.
