Background / History

Yang’s grandfather, Partridge Whistle, led the Mountain-Moving Daoists and searched for the Huo Chenzhu. According to Gu Cheng’s account, his expedition to Western Xia Blackwater City with Elder Liao Chen and Thomas ended with Liao Chen dead and Partridge Whistle missing an arm. He subsequently settled in the United States. During Yang’s childhood, he told her about supernatural phenomena, but later refused to discuss them; she believed he wanted to keep her from following his path 176.

Her father was an explorer who took Walter’s research to Dragon Country to investigate Jingjue Ancient City and disappeared several years before her expedition. Yang followed his last recorded satellite location to a mountain cave. She rejected the assumption that he was dead because he had mailed her a gold mask the previous year 68.

Ghost Cave Curse

  • Yang bears a shoulder birthmark that Gu Cheng identifies as the thousand-year Ghost Cave curse associated with the Zaglama Tribe 176.
  • Her birthmark and return from the United States help Gu Cheng deduce her relationship to Partridge Whistle 176.
  • She confirms that finding the Huo Chenzhu is a goal of her journey to Jingjue Ancient City. Gu Cheng does not know whether it can break her curse 176.

Appearance

Yang is described as a beautiful woman with a mature bearing and a striking figure 60.

  • Fair, slender neck and small ears: Noted during her close conversation with Gu Cheng at the Nine-Story Demon Tower 77.
  • Shoulder birthmark: The visible sign of her family’s Ghost Cave curse 176.
  • City clothing: Visits Gu Cheng’s home wearing carefully applied makeup, high heels, and black stockings 168.

Personality

Yang initially presents herself as proud and composed. She ignores Big Gold Tooth’s accusation that using a foreign name means she has forgotten her roots, but becomes cold when he refuses to return her photograph. Her pride also complicates her dealings with Gu Cheng: after he rescues her from the ice wolves, his remark about her weight turns her unspoken gratitude into anger 46 65.

She is persistent about her objectives and willing to challenge others. She repeatedly presses Gu Cheng about the Jingjue expedition, questions his unexplained travels, and tries to curb his escalating confrontation with Hao Aiguo. She also begins taking Gu Cheng’s warnings seriously before the rest of the archaeology team accepts the danger posed by the Demon Kingdom Snow Lotus 71 74 168 169.

Her growing affection for Gu Cheng makes her more openly vulnerable. She deliberately cultivates a relationship with his mother and eventually confesses her love when she believes death is imminent. Her unusually intense fear in the strange caves is later treated as abnormal: Yang herself points out that she had previously traveled widely on her own without reacting that way 178 180 194.

Abilities & Skills

Mural Interpretation

Yang interprets the burial-chamber murals identifying the Prince of Gumo and depicting his relationship with Queen Jingjue 188.

  • Recognizes that a figure drawn in dotted lines represents someone disappearing under the queen’s gaze 188.
  • Distinguishes what the murals depict from what can only be inferred, noting that the disappearing person’s identity remains uncertain 188.

Observation and Analysis

Yang contributes practical observations during the expedition rather than relying solely on Gu Cheng’s explanations 68 75 191 194.

  • Quickly understands his suggestion that an ancient tomb may lie beneath the glacial crevasse 68.
  • Identifies the fish in the underground river as piranhas 75.
  • Suggests that Gu Cheng may not have returned to the same marked cavern, helping him develop his explanation of Imaginary Space 191.
  • Identifies drugs, sound, hypnosis, visual effects, and magnetic fields as possible causes of their disturbed mental states 194.

Practical Defense and Team Support

Yang takes direct action during several emergencies 73 82 206 211.

  • Cuts the tentacle dragging Hao Aiguo toward a hole in the ice 73.
  • Carries the fighters’ backpacks across the underground river while Gu Cheng, Lao Hu, and Fatty confront the Snake Demon 82.
  • Uses the Torture Whip to knock down a mud-pool monster and leave it writhing in pain 206.
  • Spreads gasoline across a bridge using the Immortal-Brew Gourd, preparing the fire used to delay the pursuing Corpse Rats 211.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Beast-Taming Mask — A pure-gold mask mailed by her missing father, with a spiral symbol between its brows. Gu Cheng identifies it as a high-grade magical artifact capable of mental communication with and control over birds, beasts, snakes, insects, rodents, and ants. Yang retains it as a clue to her father’s whereabouts; no use of its beast-taming power by her is documented 68 69 169.
  • Torture Whip — Initially handed to her for protection during the mud-pool battle, then offered to her permanently for self-defense. Its strikes inflict ten times the pain, allowing her to incapacitate a monster with one lash 205 206.
  • Two Gold-Seeking Talismans — Belonged to Partridge Whistle. After his death, Yang put them away in the United States. Fatty later asks her to retrieve them 208.
  • Eye-pattern photograph — A photograph she carries during her visit to Big Gold Tooth. Its design prompts him to remember a similar marking on a jade pendant 46.

Relationships

  • Gu Cheng — Expedition companion and romantic interest. Their early arguments develop into mutual attraction; she visits him during his hospitalization, befriends his mother, and ultimately kisses him and confesses her love. Her confession does not establish an exclusive relationship, as Gu Cheng also pursues A Ning 70 86 168 178 180.
  • Her father — Missing explorer whose last satellite location and mailed gold mask guide her search. She considers the mask evidence that he survived his disappearance 68 169.
  • Partridge Whistle — Grandfather and former leader of the Mountain-Moving Daoists. His supernatural stories, search for the Huo Chenzhu, and preserved talismans connect Yang to her family’s tomb-raiding history 176 208.
  • Professor Chen — Expedition associate who accompanies her investigation of the eye symbol and the journey into the mountains. Yang also helps supervise his team in dangerous areas 46 63 77.
  • Zhou Xiumei — Gu Cheng’s mother, whom Yang accompanies shopping and actively tries to please. Zhou enthusiastically promotes Yang as a prospective daughter-in-law 168 173 178.
  • A Ning — Fellow expedition member and romantic rival. Yang feels threatened by Gu Cheng’s interest in her, but the two also cooperate against the mud-pool monsters 177 206.
  • Wang Kaixuan / Fatty Wang — Companion with whom she frequently trades insults. Their clashes range from his careless speculation about her father’s death to her openly favoring Gu Cheng’s welfare over his complaints 68 187.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Eye-Symbol Investigation and Kunlun Glacier

  • Yang introduces herself to Big Gold Tooth while investigating an eye-shaped design. His recognition of the symbol leads her to seek Gu Cheng’s jade pendant, which she believes may relate to her background; Gu Cheng refuses both her request to borrow it and her offer to buy it 46 60.
  • During the mountain expedition, an ice wolf attacks her at a dangerous crossing. Gu Cheng catches her, kicks the wolf into the abyss, and later carries her across after the wolves shake the hand rope 64 65.
  • At the cave corresponding to her father’s last satellite coordinates, she reveals the purpose of her search and asks Gu Cheng to examine his gold mask 68.
  • Near the Nine-Story Demon Tower, Gu Cheng finds the notebook she is seeking beneath an expedition corpse. Yang sincerely thanks him and agrees to keep watch over Professor Chen’s team while he and Lao Hu explore 77.

Growing Attachment to Gu Cheng

  • Yang visits Gu Cheng daily during his hospitalization, drawing notice from Huo Xiu Xiu and intensifying Yingzi’s determination to care for him 86 87.
  • After a drunken night, she wakes in a hotel room with Gu Cheng’s note. Their subsequent call mixes gratitude, embarrassment, and his teasing account of her kissing and clinging to him 124.
  • She becomes comfortable visiting his family home and wins Zhou Xiumei’s approval. Zhou proposes that they date and eventually marry, despite Gu Cheng’s objections to being matched 168 173.

Jingjue Expedition and Confession

  • Before the journey, Gu Cheng tells Yang that divine artifacts exist. She accepts the revelation quickly, explaining that her grandfather had already exposed her to stories of the supernatural 175 176.
  • Gu Cheng reveals the history behind her curse, and Yang confirms her search for the Huo Chenzhu 176.
  • Trapped between Desert Army Ants and quicksand, Yang apologizes for bringing the others into danger. Believing they are about to die, she kisses Gu Cheng and directly asks whether he returns her feelings. His discovery of a possible escape interrupts the situation 180.

Imaginary Space and the False Island

  • After being transported through an eye-like jewel, Yang encounters giant bats, an arrow trap, and thousands of Black-Eyed Strange Snakes. A sprained ankle leaves her unable to escape until Gu Cheng reaches her and carries her away 190.
  • Yang, Gu Cheng, and A Ning apparently escape the caves onto an island. Yang enjoys the apparent peace there, but later helps identify the emotional changes that make their experience suspicious 192 193 194.
  • Fatty’s voice breaks the illusion. The three discover that they have actually been unconscious for four or five days; the island events were not real 195.
  • Back in the mountain passages, Yang senses something calling to her from above. The account does not identify this sensation as a cultivated ability 195.

Continued Underground Survival

  • Gu Cheng uses true qi to help Yang and A Ning recover from poisonous fumes, then rescues both women when monsters drag them into a mud pool 204 205.
  • Yang discovers the Torture Whip’s effectiveness while defending herself and A Ning from the monsters 206.
  • A giant man-eating flower’s fragrance makes her dizzy, forcing Gu Cheng to carry her and A Ning while retreating from its vines 208.
  • She later helps prepare the gasoline fire that delays the Corpse Rats and allows the party to escape the bridge 211.
