Background / History
Qiu Deka raised A Ning, and she became fiercely loyal to him. She works under his direct orders, gathering intelligence and pursuing artifacts on his behalf 174 192.
After her first confrontation with Gu Cheng, she compiles a dossier covering his appraisal career, reputation as “Golden Eye,” and recent association with Hu Bayi and Wang Kaixuan. She reports his threat against Qiu Deka but deliberately omits his flirtatious remarks 174.
Recognizing Gu Cheng’s interest in her, Qiu Deka orders A Ning to remain near him, retrieve the Dragon Vein Map, and investigate his background and relationship with the Nine Gates. She immediately accepts the assignment 174.
Appearance
A Ning is described as beautiful and petite, with delicate, exotic-looking features and a dashing air 171 177 178.
- Face: Exquisite features that Gu Cheng finds especially captivating at close range 171.
- Bearing: Cool and aloof, with a fierce expression when confronting opponents 171 177.
- Concealed weapons: Carries daggers in her sleeves and a dagger in her boot 171 180.
Personality
A Ning is guarded, proud, and unwilling to concede easily. Even after Gu Cheng defeats her men, she attacks him herself and remains hostile when restrained. Once released, she refuses to give him her name and walks away 171.
Her loyalty to Qiu Deka remains a barrier to Gu Cheng’s trust. Although attracted to her, he withholds information about the Demon Kingdom, the Reincarnation Sect, and the Huo Chenzhu because he expects her to report those secrets to her employer 192.
Her reserve gradually softens in response to Gu Cheng’s concern. During the apparent cave journey, she trusts him to remove a snake from her shoulder and later thanks him openly after he saves her from a giant spider. The expedition subsequently discovers that it has been experiencing an illusion 185 191 195.
A Ning describes herself as normally calm and unafraid of venomous snakes or wild beasts. Her unusual fear and irritability become part of the group’s discussion about whether their experiences are genuine 194.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts and Dagger Combat
A Ning has a martial-arts foundation and fights with kicks and paired daggers 171 205.
- Launches a forceful side kick before drawing two sleeve-concealed blades 171.
- Uses a roll to absorb the impact of landing on the riverbank 205.
- Cuts through an attacking vine with her dagger in the Flower Garden 209.
- Limits: Gu Cheng repeatedly disarms her. She has not practiced breath-holding techniques and does not know Qinggong, requiring his assistance through quicksand and across the Yellow Springs Road 171 180 183.
Surveillance and Investigation
A Ning gathers intelligence on people and follows groups without immediately revealing herself 174 177.
- Compiles Gu Cheng’s personal and professional history, including information about his companions 174.
- Identifies two groups following the desert expedition, recognizing one as the Divine Administration Bureau 177.
- When unidentified pursuers attempt to kill her, leads them into the Bureau’s position and causes the two sides to fight 177.
Observation and Hazard Assessment
A Ning contributes practical warnings and identifies threats during the expedition.
- Notices an inconspicuous bulge on a passage wall 203.
- Detects movement beneath the mud before the concealed monsters attack 204 205.
- Recognizes that the enormous flower is bait and that the attacking vines’ main body lies underground 209.
- Warns that the heavily restrained Kunlun Divine Wood may contain a revived corpse 213.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Paired daggers / Butterfly Knives — Her principal close-combat weapons. They are ordinary weapons rather than divine artifacts, though her dagger is described as extremely sharp 171 205 206.
- Boot dagger — Drawn against Gu Cheng after their descent through the quicksand 180.
- Blue Spirit accessories — A pendant and two bracelets given to her by Gu Cheng. Each is a mid-grade magical artifact with a poison-neutralizing attribute described as “Immunity to all poisons.” Gu Cheng initially remains uncertain whether they can protect against Black-Eyed Strange Snakes 184.
- Satellite phone — Shows no signal on the apparent island; that setting is later exposed as an illusion 192 195.
- Great Tonic Pill — Supplied by Gu Cheng after she awakens from the illusion; later credited with considerably improving her physical condition 195 205.
Relationships
- Qiu Deka — The man who raised her and her employer. She professes absolute loyalty to him and follows his orders to investigate Gu Cheng and recover the Dragon Vein Map 174 192.
- Gu Cheng — Initially an opponent obstructing her artifact-recovery mission. He openly declares his attraction and repeatedly protects her, while she alternates between hostility, guarded gratitude, and embarrassment. His affection does not eliminate his suspicion of her allegiance 171 180 185 191 192 199.
- Sh...ev Yang — Expedition companion and romantic rival. Their arguments continue after the illusion ends; A Ning is visibly displeased when Gu Cheng gives Yang the Torture Whip, prompting him to promise her a suitable weapon as well 178 205 206.
- Zhang Qiling — Operations captain of the Divine Administration Bureau. She draws hostile pursuers into his team’s position; he acknowledges her role in exposing them but warns both her and her employer against acting arrogantly in Dragon Country 177.
- Hu Bayi (Lao Hu) — Expedition companion assigned to protect her and Yang during the battle against the giant evil spirit 186.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Dog Head Confrontation
A Ning arrives with nearly thirty men to demand the Dog Head that Wu Xie has handed to Gu Cheng. Gu Cheng defeats her men with the Torture Whip, then disarms and restrains her when she attacks. As she leaves, he reveals his identity and threatens Qiu Deka should she target his family or friends; her shocked reaction confirms that the name matters to her 170 171.
Desert Expedition and Underground Tomb
A Ning catches up with Gu Cheng in the desert while carrying out Qiu Deka’s assignment. She exposes the groups following the expedition and explains that Jingjue Ancient City is one of the Ten Great Dangerous Places 174 177 178.
During the escape from Desert Army Ants, Gu Cheng carries her and Yang to safety. At the quicksand pit, he declares his feelings for A Ning and kisses her to pass air into her mouth while taking her underground. She reacts angrily after they land and threatens him with her boot dagger 179 180.
Imaginary Space and the Island Illusion
During the apparent cave journey, Gu Cheng rescues A Ning from a giant spider. She thanks him and smiles rather than maintaining her usual stern expression. She then travels with him and Yang through further dangers before they seemingly emerge onto an isolated island 191 192.
The island sequence depicts drinking, intimacy, and conflict over whether to remain there. Fatty’s voice eventually breaks the illusion: the three have actually been unconscious for four or five days. The island’s events and Gu Cheng’s apparent cultivation gains were not real 193 195.
Continuing Escape
After awakening, A Ning continues through the underground complex. She survives the mud-pool monsters, prepares to fight alongside Yang, and helps identify the Flower Garden’s concealed threat 195 205 206 209.
At the Kunlun Divine Wood, she warns that the restraints may be sealing a revived corpse. The Corpse-Scented Demonic Taro then blooms, exposing the group to its hallucinatory fragrance 213.
