Background / History

Lin Jing transmigrated from a blue planet and began searching for immortals after discovering that cultivation was real. The Green Bull Taoist Temple identified his longevity body and appeared to accept him, but he instead awoke in a Corpse Yin Sect prison under a Body-Binding Spell. His fellow captive explained that the sect trafficked people with rare constitutions and that Lin Jing could be sold to a demon king as food 1.

The fellow captive was actually Ouyang Hao, an undercover Beast Taming Sect disciple. Ouyang ended his infiltration early to save Lin Jing, summoning help to destroy the outpost. After learning that beast-based cultivation suited his long lifespan and slow cultivation, Lin Jing joined the Beast Taming Sect. Elder Mo Wuyou granted him resources one disciple rank above his own, while requiring him to earn promotions through missions and contributions 2 3.

Appearance

Lin Jing is described as handsome and dashing; Elder Mo recognizes traces of his own youthful good looks in him 47.

  • Outer disciple clothing: A long blue-green robe, with cloth pouches used to carry the squirrel’s weapons and supplies 20.
  • Later attire: White robes accented by a shrunken red Hanging Gourd at his waist 47.
  • Usual companion: The Pineleaf Squirrel frequently rides on his shoulder 5 41.

Personality

Lin Jing is optimistic without ignoring danger. While imprisoned, he considers ways to survive even being sold to a demon king, then recognizes the possibility of rescue by righteous cultivators. After learning that the Corpse Yin Sect still knows about his constitution, he avoids outside missions without strong protection 1 11 14.

He prefers peaceful, steady cultivation to fighting, choosing a farming-capable beast so he can remain within the sect. His previous life taught him to endure monotony, and the possibility of transcendence motivates him to keep studying despite poor cultivation efficiency 3 4 24.

He remembers both kindness and grudges: he wants to repay his rescuers and eventually destroy the trafficking organization that captured him. His honesty is selective, however. He openly warns the Pineleaf Squirrel about his slow cultivation before recruiting it, but later bluffs about his mechanical turtle’s destructive power to deter rivals 2 4 34.

Abilities & Skills

Longevity Body

His rare constitution grants exceptional vitality and a greatly extended lifespan, at the cost of extremely slow cultivation 1 5 6.

  • Lifespan: Taoist Green Bull claimed that, after beginning cultivation, Lin Jing would live at least ten times as long as other cultivators in the same realm 1.
  • No elemental affinity: His constitution has no innate elemental attribute 4.
  • Nourishing blood: His contract blood appears golden and has an enticing scent to the Pineleaf Squirrel 6.
  • Danger to its bearer: His fellow captive reports that longevity-body flesh and blood are extraordinarily nourishing to monsters and coveted by demon kings 1.
  • Unrealized application: Lin Jing considers using his blood in alchemy rather than directly feeding flesh or blood to his beast. He later sees longevity blood and mutated plants as possible ingredients for a Foundation Establishment Pill tailored to the squirrel; no successful pill is documented 6 41.

Beast Taming Art and Bloodline Contract

Lin Jing cultivates beast taming true qi and forms a bloodline contract with the Pineleaf Squirrel using a special drop of blood 5 6.

  • Mental communication: The contract links cultivator and beast, allowing them to communicate mentally 5.
  • Cultivation feedback: A portion of the beast’s cultivation gains returns to him; this directly causes his second-layer breakthrough 5 17.
  • Companion control: He uses the contract to stop the frightened squirrel from firing a Mechanism Bamboo Gun at him 46.
  • Limited personal offense: Beast taming true qi primarily nurtures beasts, leaving its users weaker in direct combat than body or sword cultivators 35.
  • Unlearned secret arts: The sect’s true-disciple beast-taming arts require Foundation Establishment. Lin Jing plans preparatory training in physique, soul, and true qi, but has not learned those arts 44 45.

Myriad Transformations

Myriad Transformations is an original Illusion Path spell created by studying the Purple Dragonbone Flower beneath the Golden Bodhi Tree. Lin Jing memorizes how the flower restructures beast taming true qi into complex purple true qi, then learns to reproduce that structure himself 35 36 37.

  • Deceptive forms and aura: His illusions can resemble powerful beings and project intimidating presences far above his actual realm, deceiving observers stronger than himself 36 37.
  • Demonstrated forms: These include a purple skeletal dragon, a gigantic weasel, the Erlang Divine Eagle, a Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, the Xiangliu Snake Demon, and Fa Hai 36 46 49.
  • Mental conditioning: He uses predator forms and progressively stronger auras to train the squirrel to remain composed under fear 46.
  • Mental defense: His Fa Hai illusion prevents the pagoda’s first demonic assault from inducing hallucinations in him. He also disperses the attack affecting his squirrel 49.
  • Limits: High-grade illusions consume substantial true qi. After creating the spell, he still needs practice to use it smoothly without the Golden Bodhi Tree’s assistance 37.
  • Not physical transformation: The dragon-shaped manifestation is an illusion formed around his body, not an actual increase to a dragon’s cultivation or physical strength 36 37.

Mechanism Art

Under Elder Yu’s instruction, Lin Jing turns synthesized spirit bamboo into weapons and mechanical beasts 23 28 34.

  • Mechanism Bamboo Gun: Uses blue spirit bamboo’s water-producing properties and fires Spirit Beans Bombs; Lin Jing employs it against the Snowfield cultivator 28 33 34.
  • Mechanism Bamboo Turtle: Begins as a watering device and is improved into a combat construct with a cannon and the gun’s functions 29 33 34.
  • Spirit-Gathering Array integration: He engraves array patterns into the turtle to accelerate its gathering of water spiritual energy and strengthen its water attacks 34.
  • Bluffing: His claim that the turtle could self-destruct with ten times the earlier explosion’s force is false; its actual self-destruction would not be especially powerful 34.
  • Personal vulnerability: Despite his weapons, he cannot withstand their explosions like a body cultivator; he believes a single explosive spirit bean could kill him 46.

Spirit-Nurturing Art and Spirit-Gathering Array

These are the two spells he masters before creating Myriad Transformations 34 35.

  • Spirit-Nurturing Art: Relieves mental fatigue, supporting both the squirrel and Lin Jing’s reading and study 7 35.
  • Spirit-Gathering Array: Accumulates spiritual energy within an area; he adapts its patterns to strengthen his mechanical turtle 34.

Alchemy and Fire Control

Lin Jing studies alchemy before joining Cinnabar Glow Peak, where Elder Shen provides an earth-fire alchemy chamber and the Fire-Control Formula 20 25 39.

  • Ingredient knowledge: He memorizes an extensive outer-sect plant compendium and answers Elder Yu’s medicinal-plant questions 22 23.
  • Chosen formulas: He selects Spirit-Replenishing Pills and Soul-Ensnaring Pills for practice 40 41.
  • Fire-Control Formula: Directs flames for refining pills. Having created Myriad Transformations, he finds its basic true-qi manipulation comparatively simple 40.
  • Experimental approach: He proposes using synthesized Firecloud Chili to give the squirrel unusual flames for alchemy. Testing instead produces a black chili that grants the White Rat Spirit Netherworld Ghostfire 39 45.
  • Limits: Elder Black Bear destroys the remaining chilies and forbids further cultivation of the dangerous plant. Lin Jing returns to plans for ordinary-fire refining; no completed pill batch is documented 45 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Protective jade talisman — Given by Elder Mo to conceal his special constitution from ordinary monsters and cultivators lacking special detection methods 5.
  • Hanging Gourd — His life-bound Beast-Taming Spatial Treasure, refined with blood essence. Its wood affinity suits the squirrel, and its spirit-rich interior is larger than his former courtyard. It houses contracted beasts, can shrink for carrying, cannot be forcibly seized by outsiders, and has limited growth potential 46 47.
  • Mechanism Bamboo Gun — A handheld weapon used in Bodhi Grotto-Heaven; the squirrel also carries one during later training 33 46.
  • Mechanism Bamboo Turtle — A mechanical watering can subsequently developed into a cannon-bearing combat beast 29 33 34.
  • Mechanism Soul Core and construction manual — The highest-tier reward he chooses after defeating the Bamboo Mechanical Dragon 19 22.
  • Hidden Dragon Academy jade slip — Given by Cao Ziwei so Lin Jing can consider the academy’s invitation later 39.

Relationships

  • Pineleaf Squirrel — His first contracted beast and cultivation partner. Lin Jing recruits it with the promise of a Storage Bag, relies on its savings to begin cultivation, and develops weapons and training methods around its abilities 4 5 6 34 46.
  • Mo Wuyou — His principal elder patron. Arranges special resources, protects him from threats to his constitution, secures his spatial treasure, and sponsors his pagoda trial 3 5 11 46 49.
  • Ouyang Hao — Rescuer and senior-brother mentor. Introduces him to the sect, helps him choose a spell, explains beast-taming traditions, and advises him to apply for a spatial treasure 2 7 12 41.
  • Elder Black Bear — Rescuer, adviser, and experimental collaborator. Helps with inner-peak selection and plant testing, then appoints the White Rat Spirit as Lin Jing’s pill-testing attendant 2 25 26 45.
  • Elder Yu — Mechanism Art instructor and outer-sect benefactor. Provides mission opportunities, private instruction, and meals during Lin Jing’s examination preparation 15 23 28 29.
  • Elder Shen — Cinnabar Glow Peak elder overseeing his alchemy training. Gives him an excellent cave abode and offers to find suitable fire beasts 39.
  • Qin Caixin, Ziran, and He Yiming — Fellow disciples who support him against rival cultivators in Bodhi Grotto-Heaven. Ziran also offers to guard him during his enlightenment studies 33 35.
  • White Rat Spirit — His assigned pill-testing attendant, not a documented contracted beast. Survives eating the black chili and gains Netherworld Ghostfire 45.
  • Cao Ziwei — Hidden Dragon Academy representative who invites him to join; Lin Jing postpones the decision 39.
  • Black Loach — A sealed demon that mistakes his illusion for a powerful Buddhist cultivator. Attempts to recruit his help, then threatens him and the sect after discovering his actual realm 49 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Outer-Sect Farming and Concealment

  • Lin Jing chooses the wood-element Pineleaf Squirrel to pursue farming and plant cultivation rather than early combat 4.
  • He directs experiments with its awakened Glazed Immortal Eyes, including synthesizing ordinary leaves into powerful Red Flying Leaves. The divine ability belongs to the squirrel, not Lin Jing 9 10 17.
  • Elder Mo warns him to remain within the sect because the Corpse Yin Sect has reported his longevity body to its superiors 11.
  • Their Red Flying Leaves make bamboo harvesting so efficient that they nearly clear Golden Pearl Ravine’s outer perimeter 16.

Rising Dragon Festival

  • The pair defeat the Bamboo Mechanical Dragon by sending Red Flying Leaves through its mouth to destroy its internal mechanisms, establishing Lin Jing’s reputation as the new outer-sect number one 21 22.
  • Spectators credit him with the Object-Controlling Art, but he is only copying gestures from books: the squirrel controls the leaves throughout the fight 22.
  • He accepts the mechanism reward and begins studying Elder Yu’s craft 22 23.

Bodhi Grotto-Heaven

  • A pillar of light selects Lin Jing and the squirrel while the Inner Gate Examination party is traveling toward the Great Wilderness 30.
  • He defeats the Snowfield cultivator with his gun and squirrel, then claims the Golden Bodhi Tree for himself and the Silver Bodhi Tree for his companion. Fellow disciples rally behind them against the remaining rivals 33.
  • He deters the Female Alchemist with his mechanical turtle and a false self-destruction threat 34.
  • Golden Bodhi enlightenment enables him to create Myriad Transformations and reach fourth-level Qi Refining. Neither his spell nor the squirrel’s Leaf Plucking Flower enters the grotto-heaven’s stone-tablet rankings 35 36 37.

Cinnabar Glow Peak

  • Following his return, several inner-peak elders compete to recruit him. He chooses Cinnabar Glow Peak to continue studying alchemy 38 39.
  • He postpones Hidden Dragon Academy’s invitation, experiments with Firecloud Chili, and obtains the Hanging Gourd ahead of becoming a true disciple 39 45 46 47.
  • After the squirrel fails the guardian deity’s leap challenge, Lin Jing uses illusions to strengthen its mental composure before arranging another attempt 44 46 48.

Demon-Suppressing Pagoda

  • Elder Mo brings the pair to a trial intended to strengthen their minds through Buddhist light. Within the trial, storage items and treasures are unusable, making Lin Jing’s illusions central to their defense 49.
  • When the expected blessing fails to appear, Lin Jing decides to withdraw rather than investigate recklessly. Black Loach stops him and offers information about a supposed treasure on Heavenly Yin Mountain 50.
  • A white-robed monk’s consciousness manifests and suppresses the demon’s manifestation. The monk warns that his awakening has loosened the pagoda’s sealing structure, leaves the treasure claim for the sect to verify, and grants Lin Jing and his squirrel a Buddhist blessing 50.
