Background / History
Huang Ling grew up in a comfortable Changzhou household. Both parents were senior intellectuals, and she experienced little hardship as a child. At sixteen, she was assigned to a cotton mill in Suzhou, where she continued working and eventually married Zhuang Chaoying 224.
Her marriage brought prolonged financial and domestic strain. Zhuang Chaoying initially left his entire salary with his parents, supposedly to repay family debts. Huang Ling later discovered that those debts had already been settled and that the money was being saved for Zhuang Ganmei’s marriage. She had to demand the return of a salary payment after each childbirth 277.
The Zhuang elders provided no help during her postpartum recovery. She returned to work before fully recovering, and all three children entered the cotton mill’s nursery when only a few months old. Their treatment of Zhuang Ganmei’s wife after childbirth was markedly more generous 222.
Appearance
- General appearance: Refined-looking, but not described as particularly pretty 208.
- Apparent age: Looks somewhat older than her actual age 208.
Personality
Huang Ling is gentle, intelligent, hardworking, and attentive to her children. Initially, she adheres to traditional expectations of a wife and daughter-in-law, suppressing her anger rather than openly challenging mistreatment. Her reluctance to make trouble also leaves her vulnerable outside the family: despite meeting the housing requirements, she receives the mill’s least conveniently situated allocation because she is known to be compliant 208 216.
Her friendship with Song Ying helps her become more assertive. Observing Song Ying’s directness and seeing resistance succeed gradually convinces her that endless concessions do not solve problems. She begins defending household resources, challenging her husband’s decisions, and refusing demands from her in-laws without prioritizing their approval 223 291 293.
Her firmness does not eliminate her compassion. Although angry when Xiang Pengfei is brought home without her agreement, she softens immediately at his frightened manner and subsequently treats him generously. She also insists on financial independence from her children: while she can still work, she will not demand their earnings or allow Zhuang Chaoying to make them support the household prematurely 264 266 272.
Huang Ling nevertheless has social prejudices and ambitions for her children. She considers an official’s daughter an appropriate future match for her accomplished younger son and rejects the prospect of becoming related to the Wu household through Wu Shanshan, despite acknowledging Shanshan’s good qualities 250.
Abilities & Skills
Textile Work and Needlework
- Works as a production-workshop team leader and earns model-worker recognition year after year 208 212.
- Has the finest needlework reputation among the neighbors 271.
- Makes denim overalls for Zhou Cheng and Zhuang Tunan 234.
- Examines commercial handicraft stitching and considers it straightforward enough to learn for supplementary income 271.
Cooking and Knife Skills
- Prepares family meals and large gatherings, including Granny Zhuang’s birthday food and the university-admission celebration 210 290.
- Cuts pork into hair-thin strips that remain intact after cooking, allowing her to serve nominal “meat dishes” while preserving the ribs intended for her children 222 223.
- Cooks well enough that even the resentful Zhuang visitors become less dissatisfied once they begin eating 223.
Household Management
- Coordinates the family’s move using a borrowed tricycle cart while Zhuang Chaoying is away 216 218.
- Negotiates thirty yuan from Granny Zhuang to cover two months of Xiang Pengfei’s expenses 266.
- Safeguards three thousand yuan of Zhou Cheng’s manuscript fees and competition winnings rather than treating it as money available for general household spending 271.
Relationships
- Zhuang Chaoying — Husband. His repeated prioritization of his parents and siblings causes deep resentment and recurring arguments. Huang Ling eventually threatens divorce rather than accept another unilateral housing arrangement, though their sons’ university admissions bring a moment of renewed affection 223 256 277 290.
- Zhou Cheng / Zhuang Jingcheng — Younger son and increasingly dependable supporter. He entrusts earnings to her, challenges relatives who exploit the household, and supports her in the vote over Pengfei’s residence. Huang Ling comes to regard him as the person she can truly rely on at home 229 279 281.
- Zhuang Tunan — Eldest son. She fiercely protects his educational prospects, but his sympathy for his father and relatives sometimes puts them at odds. Her public comparison of his abilities with his younger brother’s hurts his pride 258 278 279 281.
- Zhuang Xiaoting — Daughter. Huang Ling opposes attempts to make her provide overnight care for Granny Zhuang and arranges a small private room for her 250 257 277.
- Song Ying — Courtyard neighbor, close friend, and confidante. Huang Ling’s initial misgivings give way to trust after the Lin family helps with the move. Song Ying supports her during family disputes, and the two share personal and financial concerns 218 220 273 277.
- Lin Wufeng — Helpful neighbor. He assists with the move, intervenes in a family quarrel, and obtains materials for Xiaoting’s room 217 223 250.
- Granny Zhuang and Father Zhuang — Parents-in-law. Their favoritism toward the younger branch, control of Chaoying’s wages, and demands on Huang Ling’s household drive much of her conflict with the extended family 222 277 293.
- Xiang Pengfei — Nephew by marriage. She is fond of him and treats him kindly during his first stay, but later refuses to accommodate him before her sons’ university entrance examinations 264 266 276 277.
- Zhuang Hualin — Sister-in-law. Hualin appreciates Huang Ling’s generosity toward Pengfei, including new clothes and her refusal to accept Hualin’s twenty-odd yuan for his upkeep. They nevertheless clash over his later accommodation 277.
- Father Huang and Mother Huang — Supportive parents in Changzhou. They welcome her and the children after she leaves home following an argument with Chaoying 224.
- Wu Shanshan — Young neighbor whose mistreatment concerns her. Huang Ling criticizes Zhang Amei’s favoritism, although her sympathy does not extend to welcoming Shanshan as a prospective daughter-in-law 227 250.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Granny Zhuang’s Birthday
- After helping prepare the birthday meal, Huang Ling is sent to eat in the kitchen with Jingcheng and Xiaoting under the pretext that the main table is full 210.
- The family then accuses her of favoritism because the two children have the chicken drumsticks. Zhuang Chaoying does not defend her, despite her having bought the hen and worked throughout the afternoon 210 211.
- Zhou Cheng overturns the banquet table. Huang Ling follows him out, anxious about his behavior but unable to sustain her anger when she finds him waiting for her. She subsequently leaves the gathering with Xiaoting 211 212.
Moving into the Alley
- The cotton mill allocates the family a two-room home with courtyard access and a kitchen. Its position at the alley’s far end makes the communal tap and toilets inconvenient to reach 214 216.
- Huang Ling initially avoids joining Song Ying’s dispute with Wang Yong over wastewater draining through the courtyard wall. The Lin family’s practical help during the move soon changes her opinion of them 216 217 218.
- When the Zhuang relatives arrive expecting ribs, she protects the meat saved for her children by serving vegetables with exceptionally thin pork strips instead 222 223.
- A subsequent argument over the elders’ treatment of the family ends with Huang Ling taking all three children to her parents’ home in Changzhou 223 224.
Her Younger Son’s Success
- Huang Ling learns that Zhou Cheng has earned more than eighty yuan in manuscript fees. He insists on giving the money to her rather than his father 229.
- She watches the televised report of his national junior table tennis championship with family and neighbors. When he returns with a refrigerator, Liu Xian presents the possibility of joining the National Youth Team; Huang Ling postpones the decision for a family discussion after Zhou Cheng refuses 245 247.
- Seeking handicraft orders with Song Ying, she discovers that Zhou Cheng has secretly earned thirty thousand yuan through his partnership with Li Yiming. The revelation astonishes her, particularly because she has been carefully saving the earnings he previously entrusted to her 271.
Refusing Unpaid Family Obligations
- When Granny Zhuang injures her leg, Huang Ling refuses the proposed caregiving arrangement and challenges Chaoying’s diversion of exam-marking allowances to his parents 256.
- She reacts with particular anger to the suggestion that Xiaoting provide overnight assistance. Chaoying ultimately undertakes the care himself 257 258.
- During Pengfei’s first visit, she distinguishes kindness to the child from accepting the elders’ demands: she welcomes him into the household but secures money for his expenses 264 266.
The Dispute over Pengfei’s Residence
- Two years later, Pengfei’s household-registration transfer is approved. Huang Ling refuses to let him move in before Tunan and Jingcheng complete their university entrance examinations 276 277.
- She asserts that the home was allocated through her cotton mill employment and threatens divorce if Chaoying insists. She also exposes the elders’ history of taking his wages and expecting his children to continue sacrificing for relatives 277.
- A proposed family vote initially makes her fear that she has lost Jingcheng’s support. He and Xiaoting ultimately vote with her, defeating the move 278 279.
- The confrontation leaves her distressed over Tunan’s resentment, while confirming Jingcheng’s support and Song Ying’s importance as a confidante 281.
University Admissions and Renewed Boundaries
- Huang Ling worries intensely over Tunan’s admission difficulties. When his Tongji letter and Jingcheng’s Fudan letter arrive, she leaves work early, repeatedly admires them, and shares a slow dance with Chaoying 290.
- When the elders next demand that Zhendong and Zhenbei move in, she refuses directly, rejecting the premise that she owes them a justification for deciding who lives in her home 293.
- After her sons leave for university, she plans a New Year’s trip to Shanghai 299.
