Background
Huang Fangling is the daughter of Huang Huaijiang, whose Ghost Market family descends from Peach Blossom Island’s martial lineage. Her mother died young from injuries inflicted by enemies, after which Huang Huaijiang restrained his former pride and withdrew from rivalry for his daughter’s sake. Cao Jinxing later reveals that Huang Baiyuan had poisoned Huang Huaijiang’s wife to force him to hold back in a family leadership contest, contributing to his departure for the Central Plains 83 87 281.
She became Wan Mizhai’s final disciple and the disciple with the greatest medical talent, inheriting more of his teachings than any other. He treated her like a daughter and kept her old pill chamber reserved even after she left Medicine King Valley 196.
Her medical and pill-refining accomplishments drove the Ghost Market Huang Family’s rise. That success made her a target for rival interests: Cao Jinxing identifies her as the central reason the family had begun to dominate its competitors 54 79.
Appearance
Huang Fangling has lovely features and a slender, seemingly fragile figure, initially compared to a willow swaying in the wind 52.
- Purple clothing: Frequently wears purple dresses or silk robes 52 152 331.
- Almond-shaped eyes: Become especially expressive when she proposes drawing out her hidden enemies 80.
- Riding appearance: With her hair tied in a ponytail, she appears spirited and dashing rather than frail 56.
- Visible firearm: Carries the Five Thunder Divine Mechanism across the back of her waist, contrasting with her delicate appearance 152.
- Dragon-bone changes: Develops scales around her right knee after implantation. Three months into treatment, the transformation has been checked, but she still walks with a slight limp 194 331.
Personality
Huang Fangling’s compassion does not extend to tolerating deliberate cruelty. She authorizes punishment of the traitor who endangered her family and initially refuses to free Xu Qingwei because she fears he will create more victims like the people of Wild Ghost Village. After killing Iron Fist, she feels both satisfaction at defeating an enemy and discomfort at taking a life 56 158 189.
She remains unusually composed under threat. During her first abduction, she recognizes the protective intent behind Cao Jinxing’s apparent indifference and does not resent him. Once rescued, she immediately reasserts authority over the Ghost Guards. Later, she calmly submits to abduction to protect Medicine King Valley’s wounded elders, then openly challenges her captors’ confidence 53 54 331 333.
Her pursuit of Cao Jinxing is direct and persistent. She accepts that he initially sees her only as a friend without concealing her hope that his feelings will change. Her diagnostic training helps her notice his gradual emotional openness. Despite that confidence, she becomes intensely embarrassed after their relationship turns physically intimate 81 153 196.
Abilities & Skills
Medicine and Pill Refinement
Huang Fangling’s strongest expertise is medicine rather than combat. During the dragon-transformation crisis, the narrative identifies only Li Shizhen and Wan Mizhai as physicians whose skills decisively exceed hers 194.
- Diagnostic methods: Excels at observation, listening and smelling, inquiry, and pulse-taking; also uses close observation to read subtle changes in expression 81 153.
- Medical foundations: Studies the Thousand Gold Remedies and Green Satchel Classic, covering medicines, poisons, pill refinement, surgery, and transplantation 180.
- Pill refinement: Produces the Heavenly King Pill and supplies medicines sought by Cao Jinxing 54 152.
- Golden Flame Snake treatment: Recognizes the Black-Scaled Golden Flame Snake and understands its mind-controlling venom. Can attempt to purge recent poisoning, although deeply affected victims are difficult to save 85 86.
- Acupuncture instruction: Teaches Cao Jinxing the Acupoint-Sealing Meridian-Cutting Needle and the principles of sealing the heart meridians before treating Golden Flame Snake venom 86.
- Blood Rose treatment: Works with Li Guishou and two imperial physicians on Zhu Seven’s poisoning; later reports that the poison will be cleared by dawn 158 162.
Green Satchel Classic and Life-and-Death Hand
She cultivates Medicine King Valley’s highest method, the Green Satchel Classic. Its shared origin with Xu Qingwei’s arts makes her uniquely useful to his attempted escape from the Tai Sui 188.
- Channels Life-and-Death Hand through Xu Qingwei’s meridians to drive back Tai Sui tissue and restore human flesh around his right knee 191.
- Divides her attention between two different palm forces during the procedure 191.
- Even after reaching Tongyou, cannot overpower the Tai Sui directly; the operation requires Xu Qingwei’s cooperation and a Fortune Creation Pill 191.
Surgery and Transplantation
Her surgical education allows her to understand Transplanting Flowers and Grafting Trees readily. Although she lacks extensive practical experience, her theoretical knowledge exceeds Luo Lie’s 173 180.
- Removes Xu Qingwei’s restored kneecap in preparation for implanting a supernatural replacement 191.
- Later cuts away her own kneecap and implants the Azure Dragon Bone to help resist him 193 260.
- Initially considers Alien Beast transplantation as a way to overcome her poor martial aptitude 180.
Marksmanship
Huang Fangling compensates for limited martial strength with exceptional firearm accuracy 81.
- Shatters a vase without turning her eyes away from Cao Jinxing during a demonstration 81.
- Kills a hard-body practitioner with a headshot that penetrates his defensive art 82.
- Shoots Iron Fist between the brows from more than two hundred meters away in wind and rain 158.
- Uses Medicine King Valley’s Reading Expressions secret art to enhance her vision, then shoots the moving Jia Wu in the foot, allowing Duan Yunfei to finish him 187.
Bee-Controlling Spell
She uses flute music to gather poisonous bees and butterflies over several li 185.
- Prepares a purple antidote from nearby plants and coats the gathered insects with it 185.
- Directs the swarm through poisonous miasma, dispersing it and driving back poisonous creatures and vegetation so the expedition can enter Jade Embroidery Valley 185.
Azure Dragon’s Wood Power
The implanted Dragon Bone grants her a portion of the Azure Dragon’s innate abilities 193.
- Stimulates rapid tree growth through true qi and intent, even before understanding how to use the power offensively 193.
- Creates successive wooden barriers and coordinates with Lu Yi’s wood-element art to delay Xu Qingwei’s attack 193.
- Initially produces wood without sufficient true-qi reinforcement to withstand a Faxiang attack directly 193.
- Suffers progressive dragon transformation because the bone has fused with her flesh and altered her entire circulatory and meridian systems; amputating the leg would not resolve it 194.
Mind-Seizing Technique
- In the Hangzhou street encounter, she uses a red-eyed technique that overcomes both Cao Jinxing and Xuan Yuan Fourteen 120.
Painting
- Paints lifelike portraits, including a depiction of Cao Jinxing at the waterfall where he saved her 56.
- During their Zhengzhou outing, paints five portraits of him, saving the eyes and brows until last 195.

- Five Thunder Divine Mechanism — A sixth-generation firearm obtained by her father from the Lu Ban Divine Axe Sect after her first abduction. Its “Ten Thousand Miles of Long Wind” configuration uses two convex lenses for long-range aiming 81 158.

- Huang Huaijiang — Her protective father. Obtains her firearm, intervenes against her attackers, and gradually accepts her relationship with Cao Jinxing 81 83 152.
- Wan Mizhai — Master and parental figure. Gives her his fullest medical inheritance and personally oversees treatment of the Dragon Bone’s dangerous effects 195 196.

- Qin Xuanji — A perceived romantic rival whose closeness to Cao Jinxing contributes to Huang Fangling’s decision to confess her affection more boldly 195 196.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ghost Market Abduction
Huang Fangling is seized during an attack involving rival Ghost Market interests and a traitor within the Huang Family. Her captor uses her as a shield, then drops her into the abyss at Fish Tail Waterfall. Cao Jinxing kills him and leaps after her, catching her and bringing her back to safety 52 53 54.
The investigation uncovers cooperation between the Wu and Chen Families, the mole, and Mole Gate members against the Huang Family’s pill chamber. Huang Huaijiang retaliates against the rival families, leaving the Huang Family the Ghost Market’s effective sole authority 80.
Drawing Out the Hidden Attackers
Concerned that another force is still targeting her, Huang Fangling proposes using herself as bait. She persuades Cao Jinxing to pose as her secret lover and accompanies him on three outings. The attackers finally emerge at Silver Scale Lake, where she fights with her firearm before her father intervenes 80 81 82 83.
After recognizing the Black-Scaled Golden Flame Snake, she explains its connection to mind control and teaches Cao Jinxing how to treat its venom. He refuses her offer to accompany him to Liaodong, choosing to learn the procedure rather than expose her to further danger 85 86.
Xuanfu Expedition
She joins the convoy bound for Xuanfu to help treat Shen Xiang’s poisoned subordinate. During the journey, she kills Iron Fist with a long-range shot; on arrival, she joins the medical team treating Blood Rose poisoning 154 158.
Her relationship with Cao Jinxing also grows closer. He gives her protective armor before an ambush and later presents her with Spirit Liquid and a wine flask 156 162.
Wild Ghost Village and the Dragon Bone
After receiving Transplanting Flowers and Grafting Trees, Huang Fangling identifies Jade Embroidery Valley as a lead in Cao Jinxing’s search for the Tiger Wing Formation. She later treats A Wen, the Water Monkey, and joins the expedition against Luo Lie 173 179.
Captured by Xu Qingwei’s Tai Sui vines, she is coerced into helping separate his body from the creature. She refuses to finish the operation once Cao Jinxing’s arrival breaks his leverage over her, and Xu Qingwei shatters both her arms. During the ensuing battle, she implants the Dragon Bone in herself and uses its wood power to help resist him 188 189 191 193 260.
Treatment and Betrothal
The bone’s power begins transforming her body into a dragon. Xu Fuyang temporarily seals it, and Cao Jinxing rushes her toward Wan Mizhai, who suppresses the transformation using medicine and a Cold Jade Ice Bed 194 195.
Before entering seclusion, she spends time sightseeing and painting with Cao Jinxing in Zhengzhou. They become lovers, exchange personal tokens, and agree to a future marriage proposal. She then returns to Medicine King Valley for prolonged treatment and cultivation, maintaining contact through letters 195 196 310.
Taiping Way Captivity
Three months into her recovery, the Performer Official and Music Official attack Medicine King Valley and threaten its wounded elders. Huang Fangling leaves the safety of her pill chamber and agrees to go with them to prevent further harm 331.
Taken to Kunlun for her Azure Dragon power, she is used in the Taiping Way’s ritual to summon the Heavenly Gate Stele. Cao Jinxing rallies Jianghu allies and eighty thousand troops, reaches the ritual site, and rescues her. The summoning has nearly exhausted her true qi 333 334 335.
