Toot-
A ferry sounded its whistle, letting out a low blast.
Since it was only a cross-river ferry, most of the passengers stood on deck, watching the river flow past.
Holding the railing, Lin Hao also spotted a ten-thousand-ton warship patrolling the river.

Lin Hao withdrew his gaze and looked toward the harbor. The ferry terminal was already faintly visible ahead, and his keen eyesight could make out the bustling crowds on the pier.
Many people aboard the ferry wore plain clothing. Some carried vegetables or luggage, while others wore factory uniforms.
"Many people from north of the river take the ferry to Shanghai for work, then go back at night."
Water transport was the cheapest form of transportation in the world.
For these workers, spending the time to take two ferry rides a day might be more economical than staying overnight in Shanghai.
