Geography
Spirit Veins and Mortal Nations
- Spirit-vein network: Cultivator settlements cluster around principal spirit veins and their branches. These form a winding, river-like network enclosing regions of mortal nations 440.
- Low-energy interior regions: Much of the world's territory has little spiritual energy. The cultivator-inhabited regions occupy a comparatively small share of its total area 441.
- Enormous scale: The Sunu Sect's territory alone exceeds Earth's entire surface area. Mortals rarely leave their home regions, and even cultivators face difficult long-distance travel 441.
- Damaged principal veins: The realm originally possessed thirteen principal spirit veins. Four were destroyed during the previous Demon Realm War, leaving two death zones 467.
- Cultivation environment: Its spiritual energy is gentle and well suited to cultivation and establishing foundations, though the Spirit World offers substantially richer resources 485 548.
Notable Locations
| Location | Significance |
|---|---|
| Myriad Transformations City | Geographical center of the realm, built on its largest and foremost spirit vein. Traditionally hosted major conferences and remained a strategic administrative center after Great Qi's establishment 468 481 483 484. |
| Yin-Yang Valley | Headquarters of the Hehuan Sect and the source of numerous branch veins. Its formation concentrates spiritual energy into visible mist; ordinary residents can extend their lives simply by living there 461. |
| Hengshan Spirit Vein branch | Supports the Luoxia, Kumu, and Luoshui sects, all subordinate to the Sunu Sect 440. |
| Soul-Breaking Cliff | The realm's most dangerous forbidden ground and weakest barrier point. A principal spirit vein was destroyed here during ancient fighting; it later became the main defensive staging ground against the Demon Realm 496. |
| Lianyun Mountain Range | Borders the Myriad Transformations Immortal Dynasty, Hehuan Sect, and Sword Palace; the site of a major Divine Transformation confrontation 471 475. |
| Ascension Platform | An abandoned platform Lin Hao later examined and used to send a disguised Flesh Clone toward the Spirit World 547 548. |
Cultivation System
Realms and Foundations
The mainstream system subdivides the early portions of an older path—refining essence into qi, qi into spirit, spirit into void, and void into union with the Dao—to lower the difficulty of beginning cultivation 434.
| Stage / Realm | Documented Features |
|---|---|
| Qi Refinement | The ninth level roughly corresponds to Golden Body martial artists and Yin Spirit practitioners in Xiang Zhiguo's comparison of systems 434. |
| Foundation Establishment | Divided into Heaven, Earth, and Human tiers. Human-tier establishment is easiest but makes Core Formation hardest; it is often chosen by cultivators satisfied with limited advancement or administrative work 434. |
| Core Formation | Includes false cores, true cores, and golden cores. False cores commonly depend on external assistance, such as demonic beast cores, and cannot advance to Nascent Soul. Core Formation cultivators already count as important local figures 434. |
| Nascent Soul | Nascent souls have three grades: ordinary, unleaking, and Purple Palace. Purple Palace nascent souls possess greater affinity with Heaven and Earth Primordial Qi 443. |
| Late Nascent Soul | Great cultivators develop preliminary Divine Transformation capabilities and can mobilize primordial qi on a scale capable of producing natural disasters 434. |
| Divine Transformation | Unites the physical body, nascent soul, and divine sense. Practitioners control primordial qi within their divine-sense range, can disperse their bodies, and must have their primordial spirits completely eradicated to be killed 465. |
- Substages: Realms are further divided into early, middle, and late stages. The transition into the late stage is especially substantial 434 436.
- Alternative paths: Body and soul cultivation exist but are not mainstream. Xiang identifies Buddhist Dharma-Protecting Vajras with advanced body cultivation and a branch of the Myriad Souls Palace with soul cultivation 434.
- Combat proficiency: Cultivation level alone does not guarantee combat effectiveness. Flying swords, Dharma Treasures, talismans, formations, and Daoist arts require separate study and suitable equipment 476.
Heavenly Dao and World Limits
- Divine Transformation suppression: Limited ambient primordial qi and the damage caused by powerful combat prompt the world will to suppress Divine Transformation cultivators. Full-strength attacks invite heavenly punishment and backlash 434 463.
- Upper limit: Early Divine Transformation is the Heavenly Dao's effective ceiling; cultivators seeking further progress generally pursue ascension 546 547.
- Independent spaces: Lin Hao's manifested Cave-Heaven is continually corrected and compressed by the surrounding world, increasing its maintenance cost over time 463.
- Tai Xuan Palace's path: Its cultivators divine fate throughout their lives before ultimately dissolving into the realm's Heavenly Dao. Strengthening the realm's will also benefits their cultivation 478 490.
- Rebirth: Nascent Soul cultivators approaching the end of their lives may choose rebirth, but their next lives are not guaranteed to surpass their previous achievements. Reincarnation and the Netherworld are known subjects, though Qingyang knows of no local cultivator who has entered the Netherworld 438.
Political Powers
One Dynasty, Three Palaces, Five Sects
The nine supreme powers all possess Divine Transformation cultivators. Before unification, the Myriad Transformations Immortal Dynasty and Sword Palace were generally regarded as the strongest two 440.
| Group | Power | Position and Specialties |
|---|---|---|
| One Dynasty | Myriad Transformations Immortal Dynasty | Central power occupying the foremost spirit vein. Its advantage over the Sword Palace widened after Liu Qingqing's apparent ascension 459 481. |
| Three Palaces | Sword Palace | The foremost sect outside the dynasty; Liu Qingqing's faction and a leading sword-cultivation power 451 452. |
| Three Palaces | Tai Xuan Palace | Traditionally neutral; specializes in divination and acts on behalf of the realm and its will 467 489 490. |
| Three Palaces | Myriad Souls Palace | One of the Three Demonic Sects; associated with soul cultivation, soul extraction, and the Myriad Souls Banner 434 474 476. |
| Five Sects | Hehuan Sect | One of the Three Demonic Sects; includes rival Holy Son and Saintess lineages and oversees the Sunu Sect 440 450 475. |
| Five Sects | Yaoding Sect | Traditionally neutral alchemy power whose pill allocations are governed by a postwar pact 466 467. |
| Five Sects | Zixiao Sect | A supreme sect with two Divine Transformation cultivators in the later wartime assessment 489. |
| Five Sects | Beast Taming Sect | Its Divine Lord Suoyao and associated spirit-beast powers became central participants in the betrayal preceding the Demon Realm convergence 486. |
| Five Sects | Netherworld Sect | One of the Three Demonic Sects; possesses the symbolic Netherworld Sword 474 475. |
Subordinate Sects
| Hierarchy | Details |
|---|---|
| Hehuan Sect → Sunu Sect → Luoxia, Kumu, and Luoshui sects | The three lower sects share a branch of the Hengshan Spirit Vein 440. |
| Yaoding Sect → Red-Crowned Sect → Green Grain Sect | Green Grain Sect provided Xiang Zhiguo's transmigrator settlement with a foothold in the realm 434 440. |
- Territorial separation: Yaoding and Hehuan territories do not border each other; the Myriad Transformations Immortal Dynasty lies between them 450.
- Local authority: A sect with three Core Formation cultivators, such as Luoxia, can dominate ten thousand li of surrounding territory 446.
- Resource hierarchy: Senior cultivators rely on their sects to gather cultivation resources rather than supporting the organizations without return 440.
Great Qi Immortal Dynasty
- Establishment: After the confrontation in Myriad Transformations City, the Divine Transformation Conference proclaimed the reestablishment of Great Qi and the incorporation of all sects into it 484.
- Leadership: Liu Qingqing became First Emperor, with Master Haotian as National Preceptor 484.
- Recognition: Every major power except the Beast Taming Sect recognized the settlement after Lin Hao and his allies defeated their enemies within the Myriad Transformations Grand Formation 484.
- Military coordination: The new administration began allocating supplies and organizing the realm's defenses against the Demon Realm 485 496.
Society and Resources
Competition and Status
Competition for longevity, cultivation methods, pills, and natural treasures dominates the realm. Cultivators face limited lifespans and potential, making the search for even a small breakthrough opportunity capable of provoking bloodshed 434 435 439.
Strength and backing heavily influence justice and diplomacy. The old righteous–demonic war ended through a balance of power, and major factions generally avoid renewed ideological warfare unless sufficient benefits are involved 440 442 458.
Not every cultivator pursues conflict. Some ascetics focus on steady cultivation, while specialists such as alchemists may invest little time in combat arts 476.
Recruitment and Communication
- Regional recruitment practices: Some mortal kingdoms hold an Ascension Ceremony every thirty years. Elsewhere, sects dispatch spirit-seeking envoys to identify promising children earlier 429 440.
- Cultivation families: Their descendants have higher selection rates, though Green Grain Sect prefers promising mortal recruits whose backgrounds are considered clean 440.
- Long-distance news: Communication jade slips and formations transmit important information rapidly despite the realm's immense size 463.
Pills and Specialist Trades
| Resource or Profession | Documented Value |
|---|---|
| Supreme-grade Foundation Establishment Pill | Kumu estimates an auction price of twenty thousand to more than fifty thousand low-grade spirit stones 445. |
| Ordinary Nascent Soul cultivation pills | Can be purchased for roughly one hundred top-grade spirit stones; high- and supreme-grade pills are much harder to obtain through money alone 454. |
| Alchemy grandmasters | Considered important enough that an assassination attempt against a prospective grandmaster damages the attacking faction's reputation across the realm 459 466. |
| Artifact-forging grandmasters | Fewer and generally less sought after than alchemists, but especially important during wartime for constructing Magic Ships 478. |
Transmigrators, Gu Cultivation, and the Demon Clan
- Transmigrator stigma: Outsiders are commonly called Extraterritorial Heavenly Demons. Xiang Zhiguo's group survives through discretion, pill refining, and cooperation with Green Grain Sect 434.
- Reported origin of the hostility: Liu Qingqing attributes earlier trouble to long-lived, pointy-eared outsiders calling themselves elves. Their alleged disaster was also connected to the extermination of Gu cultivators 462.
- Insect extermination orders: According to Xiang, the Spirit World ordered insect spirit beasts exterminated wherever possible, reportedly following an Immortal Realm decree. The Gu cultivation path was wiped out in connection with these orders 434.
- Native demons: Many are raised as sect spirit beasts. Wild populations survive partly because of their usefulness to cultivators, rapid reproduction, and the deterrence provided by a roaming Divine Transformation flood dragon 468 486.
History
Earlier Planar Wars
The Cultivation Realm experienced numerous planar convergences, many of which opened valuable secret realms. Previous successes encouraged it to attempt the conquest of the Demon Realm, but the resulting war lasted a thousand years and forced it onto the defensive 467.
The war destroyed four principal spirit veins and killed numerous Nascent Soul and Divine Transformation cultivators. Soul-Breaking Cliff became a lasting scar after dozens of Divine Transformation combatants, formations, and Magic Ships shattered its underlying vein. Wartime experience nevertheless greatly improved the realm's formations and ships 467 476 496.
Lin Hao's Arrival
Xiang Zhiguo introduced Lin Hao to the realm's mainstream cultivation system and arranged access to Green Grain Sect's inheritance. Lin Hao later investigated the Zhou Dynasty region and confirmed that it belonged to the same world, despite its enormous distance from Green Grain Sect 434 435 440 441.
His search for cultivation methods and resources brought him through Luoxia Sect, the Sunu Sect, and the Hehuan Sect. He became an influential alchemist, formed a Purple Palace nascent soul, restored Liu Qingqing's strength, and formally inherited the Hehuan Sect's Holy Son position 443 451 463 466.
Renewed Demon Realm Crisis
Tai Xuan Palace confirmed that the Demon Realm was approaching again and that the damaged Spirit World passage had been severed. Spatial formations could accelerate convergence to approximately one year, while inaction or repulsion formations might delay it for three to five years 467.
The resulting conference established a Cultivation Alliance bound by Heavenly Dao Oaths. After Lin Hao's side won the specialist contests intended to help choose its leader, Zhao Wuji rejected the outcome and activated Myriad Transformations City's grand formation. His defeat led to the proclamation of the Great Qi Immortal Dynasty 478 481 484.
Suoyao and other defectors then attacked sects and convoys while cooperating with native demons and the Demon Realm. Lin Hao pursued them, and the defeat of the summoned demon kings undermined followers who had defected because they expected the Cultivation Realm to lose 486 491 495.
Counterinvasion of the Demon Realm
The realm concentrated ships, spirit stones, materials, and formation masters at Soul-Breaking Cliff. Its formations followed Lin Hao's designs, turning the weakest point of the world barrier into a prepared battlefield 496.
When formations in both worlds created a bridge, the Cultivation Realm instead launched an expedition into the Demon Realm. Its fleet bombarded the Confluence Plain, while Lin Hao pursued Long Wu and later subdued or captured the remaining Divine Transformation Great Demons. He ordered the expedition to withdraw in anticipation of a possible Spirit World Reception Envoy 511 512.
Interrealm Connections
Earth Will
- Initial intrusion: Earth Will penetrated the Cultivation Realm and established coordinates and arrival anchors 490.
- Shared threat: Their clash attracted a dangerous gaze in the Void Turbulence. The two wills stopped fighting and jointly repelled it 490.
- Tacit agreement: Earth Will retained its anchors while helping address problems in the Cultivation Realm. Lin Hao interpreted the Mystic Wood Dharma Sword choosing him as part of the realm's bargain for his assistance 490.
- Demon Realm's approach: Information received by Lin Hao linked the renewed approach to the disturbance caused by Earth Will's intrusion and the repulsion of an Abyss Evil God 490.
Spirit World and Ascension
- Damaged passage: Liu Qingqing's attempted ascension was interrupted by an Abyss invasion. She fought a Demon Realm Divine Transformation cultivator and fell back into the Cultivation Realm injured 451 467.
- Demon Realm's objective: Its leaders intended to enslave the Cultivation Realm and use both worlds' strength to reinforce an ascension passage 489.
- Temporary stabilization: During convergence, the combined pull of the two worlds helped stabilize a newly opened passage against Void Turbulence 512.
- Lin Hao's later ascent: After reaching Divine Transformation, he sent a Flesh Clone through the Cultivation Realm's Ascension Platform under the Yin-Yang Divine Lord's identity 547 548.
- Spirit World reports: Reception Envoys reacted with alarm to his origin. Fairy Linghuan claimed that the Cultivation Realm was likely finished and that higher powers had severed its connection; ascenders later associated the severance with Time-Light Turbulence. These statements are reports from Spirit World characters, not direct confirmation of the realm's destruction 548 551.
- Missing ascenders: Lin Hao learned that, before his arrival, the most recent confirmed successful ascender from the Cultivation Realm had reached the Spirit World a thousand years earlier. Later would-be ascenders apparently suffered mishaps in transit 551.
