After Chen Shi'an's master died, Chen discovered he had inherited the temple's debts and could not legally take it over without recognized education credentials. The master had arranged for him to enroll in high school, leaving Chen with an admission notice and exam books instead of the diploma he hoped for.
After Chen Shi'an read his late master's ledger and final letter, he resolved to inherit the Pure Dust Temple, repay its debts, and go down the mountain to study. On August 31, he left the temple with Shi Mo in his luggage and set out toward a new life.
Chen Shi'an left Pure Dust Temple for the city, where he planned to attend university before deciding what to do next. After descending the mountain and catching a ride into town, he reached the bus station to continue his journey.
Chen Shi'an traveled by bus toward Yunqi No. 1 High School, carrying Black Cat in his backpack, and struck up a conversation with a curious high-school girl. The girl complained about school and marveled at Chen Shi'an's stamina, while he recommended glucose water.
Chen Shi'an chatted with Wen Zhixia during a hot bus ride, answered passengers’ questions, and read Wen Zhixia’s face. After they parted at the final stop, he checked the route to Yunqi No. 1 High School and decided to walk there.
Chen Shi'an explored the city on his way to Yunqi No. 1 High School, experiencing the mortal world for the first time. After Principal Lin called to check on him, Chen Shi'an arrived at the school and was escorted inside, leaving the curious crowd convinced the school had invited a Taoist.
Chen Shi'an visited Yunqi No. 1 High School to arrange his schooling and met Principal Lin, one of his late master's creditors. He insisted on repaying the debt, then learned that his master had told Principal Lin he was the God of Literature descended to earth.
Chen Shi'an accepted his master's plan to join Class Five, Year Two’s science track and won Principal Lin over with tea from Pure Dust Temple. As Teacher Liang hurried to meet the new student, classmates traded rumors about a Daoist arriving at school and a former student who had overcome depression while traveling.
Principal Lin introduced Chen Shi'an, a young Daoist who had never attended school, to Mr. Liang as his new student. Mr. Liang worried about Shi'an's missing academic foundations and decided to assess his level with a recent exam paper.
Chen Shi'an took a baseline exam at school and discovered that his knowledge of modern subjects was far behind his confidence, while classical Chinese remained familiar. The poor results humbled him and left him more determined to continue his worldly training.
Principal Lin persuaded Teacher Liang to take Chen Shi'an into Class Five and tutor him despite his lack of academic foundations. After reviewing Shi'an's exam papers, Liang found his Chinese writing strong but his other subjects nearly nonexistent, leaving Shi'an determined to work hard.
After enrolling at the school, Chen Shi'an arranged to commute and share Principal Lin’s nearby apartment with a young woman, while preparing to catch up on years of missed schooling. He headed to Class Five determined to overcome the academic gap.
Chen Shi'an joined Class Five as a Taoist student preparing for the college entrance exam and met his quiet new deskmate, Lin Meng Qiu. He sat beside the class monitor as his classmates began betting on how long he would last there.
Chen Shi'an settled into Class Five and became deskmates with Lin Meng Qiu, Principal Lin’s daughter, who offered to help him adjust to school. After buying dinner and retrieving the cat, he met Principal Lin, who was ready to take him to meet his future roommate.
Chen Shi'an accompanied Principal Lin to view an apartment and heard Lin Ming's concerns about his daughter, Lin Meng Qiu. When they reached the rental, the tenant answered the door, and Chen Shi'an recognized her voice as belonging to someone he knew.
Chen Shi'an moved into an old apartment shared with Li Wanyin, whom he had met earlier that day. After Principal Lin introduced them and left, Chen Shi'an started helping Li Wanyin clean their new home.
Chen Shi'an settled into the apartment and grew closer to his roommate, Li Wanyin, as they talked about their lives. When someone stole Li Wanyin’s takeout, Chen Shi'an shared an extra cafeteria meal with her, and they ended the evening eating together with a cat.
Chen Shi'an explored city life by visiting a barbershop for his first professional hair wash and haircut. As his long hair was cut into a standard student style, he reflected that he had truly entered the wider world.
Chen Shi'an bought household and kitchen supplies for the apartment he shared with Li Wanyin, while considering his limited savings and future expenses. When he returned with a new haircut, Li Wanyin was startled by how different he looked.
After cutting his hair and settling into the shared home, Chen Shi'an grew closer to Li Wanyin as they shared food and childhood stories. He learned about her family responsibilities, while his first stirrings of attraction tested his Taoist resolve.
Chen Shi'an and Li Wanyin set up WeChat, became friends, and agreed to split their shared household expenses. After seeing Li Wanyin’s difficult job search, Chen Shi'an went to bed feeling that his first journey away from home was going smoothly.
Chen Shi'an adjusted to city life by making breakfast, studying his high school textbooks, and using his Taoist abilities to dry his uniform. He left for school as the sun rose, while Black Cat stayed behind.
Chen Shi'an walked to school in his new uniform, where he reunited with Wen Zhixia and agreed to become her study and walking buddy. After arriving at Class Five, his classmates failed to recognize him after his haircut and change of clothes.
Chen Shi'an adapted to his first full day at Yunqi No. 1 High School, surprising Class Five with his new appearance and his unusual approach to studying. Lin Meng Qiu offered him exam memorization materials, but he returned them and chose to memorize the complete Chinese texts instead.
Teacher Liang brought Chen Shi'an study materials and borrowed textbooks so he could rebuild his academic foundations, while Lin Meng Qiu learned he was aiming for the top science-stream ranking. Chen Shi'an bonded with his classmates over his Daoist background, and Lin Meng Qiu kept deducting points from him in her thoughts.
