|---|---|---|
| Inquisitor — fourth tier, publicly held position | 26 | Serves as the Order God Church’s judge in Rojia City. His actual strength already exceeds that of an ordinary Inquisitor; Alfred recognizes that he deliberately restricted himself to judge-level spells in their earlier fight 23 26. |
| Undisclosed higher realm — advancement becoming difficult to control | 48 49 | Dis attributes his early loss of faith partly to advancing too quickly. By this point, he cannot control his realm and fears being claimed by the Order Temple. No exact higher rank or breakthrough date is given. |
Background / History
Youth and disillusionment
Puer watched Dis grow up and considers his talent extraordinary. As a young man visiting the Order God Church’s headquarters, he told a Temple Elder that Order was a mask: outsiders could not see the person behind it, while its wearer could act in its name. Hoffen heard of this incident before meeting him and became fascinated by his defiance 26 43 48.
Dis once hoped to defend the Immerlis Family’s standing in the church and dedicate himself to the Light of Order. However, he later explained that his spiritual exhaustion began long before the deaths in his family; his unusually rapid advancement had brought him too early to a state of disbelief 30 48.
Deaths of Kallen’s parents
Dis’s son and daughter-in-law were also Order Church Inquisitors. During a mission against an Otherworldly Demon, their souls suffered irreversible contamination. At their request, Dis killed them to grant them release 30.
Afterward, he wanted the family to leave church life behind. He stopped intending to let its younger members undergo Purification, preferring the risks of ordinary life to supernatural corruption and suffering 25 30.
The Divine Descent Ritual
When the original Kallen became gravely ill, Dis tried unsuccessfully to save him. He told Mason and Mary that he was taking the boy to a specialist hospital in Bellwyn City, but Kallen had already died before their departure 30.
With help from Hoffen and Puer, Dis prepared a high-specification Divine Descent Ritual. It restored life to Kallen’s body, but the soul within it was no longer the original boy’s. Dis knew from the beginning that his former grandson was not returning unchanged 30.
Hoffen and Puer believed the ritual had brought down an Evil God and repeatedly urged Dis to kill the newcomer while he remained weak. Dis nevertheless accepted the person who called him Grandfather as his grandson. Although he had been willing to sacrifice everything for the ritual, the God of Order took nothing from him 30 48.
Appearance
- Build and presence: Not especially imposing physically, but projects such steadiness that Kallen’s anxiety eases in his presence 3.
- Priest’s clothing: Usually wears religious attire and carries a black case when leaving for church work 4.
- Enforcement attire: Wears a black robe similar in cut to his usual priest’s clothing, but with a markedly grim presence when visiting the suspects behind Siso’s family’s deaths 41.
- Arm injury: Returns with roughly a third of his left hand and arm charred. He has Kallen remove the burned skin before treating it with purple liquid 5.
Personality
Dis is stern, reserved, and intimidating within his household. Mina and Lunt visibly react to his authority, while Mary hastily extinguishes her cigarette when he enters her workroom. His eldest grandson receives noticeably gentler treatment 3 4.
His deepest loyalty is to his family rather than the church. He describes his ambitions as extending only as far as his own front porch: he wants his relatives healthy, safe, and happy. His acceptance of the new Kallen does not depend on bloodline, personality, or whether the soul is divine or demonic 30.
Dis is decisive and exceptionally composed. He endures the removal of burned skin without crying out or changing expression, and he has no hesitation about confronting wealthy businessmen or political figures when supernatural wrongdoing is involved. Puer describes him as difficult to sway once he has made a decision 5 38 47.
His religious skepticism does not prevent him from enforcing Order regulations. He warns Kallen that Order must first be applied to oneself, yet openly blasphemes the God of Order. He also rejects the idea that Otherworldly Demons are inherently evil, remarking that people have often frightened him more 35 43 44.
Abilities & Skills
Order Divine Spells
Dis uses Order Church spells with precise control while concealing the full extent of his strength 23.
- Order—Cage: Produces black patterns that seal off an area. He uses it against Puer in his study and later to remove her from an eavesdropping position 11 47.
- Order—Purge: Creates white light at his fingertip and expels the corruption affecting Ron after exposure to a dangerous copper coin 29.
- Projectile control: Stops airborne fountain pens and sends them back into the editor-in-chief, killing him 42.
Awakening Art
Dis can make the dead awaken, an essential ability of an Order Church Inquisitor 3 27.
- Spreads shadows through the basement workroom, makes Jeff’s corpse sit up, and questions it about its death 3.
- Distinguishes this temporary animation from genuine resurrection: awakening remains does not restore a living, soul-filled person 30.
Divine Descent Ritual
Dis successfully conducts a ritual powerful enough to restore life to Kallen’s body 30.
- Receives preparation assistance from Hoffen and Puer; Rasma is later revealed to have been involved as well 30 48.
- The result is believed by those who know its circumstances to be an Evil God’s descent, rather than the return of the original Kallen 28 30.
- His willingness to sacrifice everything does not result in the God of Order taking a sacrifice from him 48.
Forbidden—Eternal Order—Erasure
Dis invokes a Forbidden Spell that removes Aloteta and his protections from existence 44.
- Erases defenses drawn from the Berry Church, Earth God Church, Mist God Church, and Church of Light, along with a blessed mirror’s power 44.
- Removes Aloteta himself and even his clothing 44.
- Spillover leaves Delis alive but mentally damaged 44.
- Causes Dis to cough up blood afterward; he calls this a minor side effect 44.
Restraint-Releasing Formation
Dis places Kallen inside a star-marked circle and invokes Order to release restraints and bring serenity to the soul 41.
- A faint red glow spreads over Kallen’s clothing and hands 41.
- Dis says the purpose is to let Kallen’s true heart show without burden, comparing it to buying a child cotton candy at an amusement park 41.
Investigation and Supernatural Law
- Recognizes the Abyss God Church symbolism in the killer’s arrangement of Old Darcy’s body 16.
- Identifies tattoos on a corpse as evidence that the woman had been an itinerant Chasean fortune-teller 29.
- Knows Order regulations governing supernatural harm to ordinary people and cites them when punishing offenders 41 42.
- Detects the poor performance of a purported Divine Servant seeking information about the Bellwyn investigation 34.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black case: Contains surgical instruments, strangely colored liquids, translucent beads, metal plaques, a whip of unidentified material, and a hollow sword hilt 5.
- Hollow sword hilt: Decorated with a distorted skull on one side and a benevolent holy maiden on the other. Kallen notices its resemblance to the weapon depicted in the notebook drawing of his parents’ deaths 5 10.
- Purple medicinal liquid: Poured over his injured arm after removal of the charred skin, producing white smoke and a sizzling sound 5.
- Fountain pen: Used to write investigation reports concerning the Bellwyn Divine Descent incident 38.
Relationships

- Kallen’s parents — Dis’s son and daughter-in-law, both Inquisitors. He personally grants them death after their souls become irreversibly contaminated 30.
- Mason Immerlis — Son. Dis conceals Kallen’s death from him before the ritual and later instructs him to bring Kallen home from hospital 28 30 39.
- Mary — Daughter-in-law. Respects and fears his authority; recognizes his deep concern for Kallen 3 29.
- Winnie — Daughter. Puer recalls that she rebelled against Dis’s restrictions to pursue a marriage that later ended in divorce 46.
- Mina and Lunt — Grandchildren whose behavior reflects his commanding position in the household 3 4.
- Puer — Longstanding companion who watched him grow up and helped prepare the ritual. Their relationship includes arguments, teasing, and Dis’s repeated use of Order—Cage to restrain her 26 30 35 47.
- Mr. Hoffen — Close friend whom Dis once saved. Helps prepare the ritual and protect the family from suspicion; admits before dying that he secretly worshiped Dis as well as his god 30 48.
- Alfred — Otherworldly Demon who recognizes Dis’s concealed strength. Dis permits him to work for the family and accompanies him during the investigation into Siso’s family’s deaths 23 35 41.
- Miss Molly — Otherworldly Demon accepted as a family employee. Dis trusts that she and Alfred will not endanger the household 35.
- Rasma — High priest with whom Dis has a deep friendship. Involved in preparations surrounding the ritual and a planned second Divine Descent intended to divert suspicion from the Immerlis Family 34 48.
- Eunice — Prospective partner for Kallen whose match Dis approves. Her family in Vien becomes part of the fallback Kallen believes Dis is arranging for him 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Protecting Kallen
After Kallen’s encounter with the possessed Mrs. Hughes, Dis stabs him at the crematorium, declaring that he should end the mistake he began. Kallen survives; Dis later admits to Hoffen that he could not bring himself to finish killing him 23 25.
When another supernatural attack reopens Kallen’s wound in hospital, Dis checks the injury himself and arranges continued treatment at home. He subsequently forbids anyone from secretly performing Purification on Kallen, explaining that avoiding Purification and concealing his power will protect him during the renewed ritual investigation 28 35.
Retribution for Siso’s Family
Dis intervenes when Kallen suggests that Otherworldly Demon power was used to kill Siso’s family. He dismisses the supposed immunity of mayors, financial groups, and the media, then directs Kallen to identify suspects and their addresses 38 39.
During their visits, Dis severs Renee’s arm for using church power against an ordinary person, throws Molf across his study, kills the editor-in-chief with his own pens, and finally erases Aloteta with a Forbidden Spell. He also formally confines Puer for attacking Kallen 41 42 44.
Preparing the Family’s Future
Dis later reverses his earlier refusal to let Kallen study abroad and approves his courtship of Eunice. Kallen interprets these arrangements as a fallback in Vien, while Dis insists that only he can handle the trouble facing him 11 45 47.
After Hoffen’s death, Dis explains the planned second ritual intended to clear the family of suspicion. His own unresolved danger instead concerns his realm and the Order Temple. At Hoffen’s grave, he questions whether believers are merely cultivated until a god can harvest the fruits of their faith, and says it is nearly time to take off his mask 48 49.
