Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Sequence 7 — Warlock 25 The mysterious lady identifies Aurora’s existing rank on the Mystery Pryer pathway. She has possessed supernatural powers for several years; her potion consumption and earlier advancements are not shown 25.

Background / History

Aurora settled in Cordu six years before the story began. She bought an inexpensive plot and built a house on it, unaware that it had belonged to a deceased Warlock whose home the Church had burned down. When Lumian later explained its history, she expressed surprise and remarked that it explained the low price 1 7 15.

A year after moving to the village, she returned from a trip with a nearly starving, homeless thirteen-year-old boy. She adopted him, gave him the name Lumian, and shared her surname, Lee. According to Aurora, she had initially only offered him food, but he kept following her and helping with chores until she softened. She was still a teenager when she took responsibility for him 1 43.

Aurora educated Lumian at home, writing his textbooks and practice papers herself. Her instruction covered general knowledge and fighting techniques; she eventually judged that he could theoretically qualify for any university, while acknowledging that she had never taken the entrance examination herself 8 9.

She belongs to a mutual-aid organization formed by people unable to return to their homeland. Its members exchange knowledge, solve problems through correspondence, and sometimes hold gatherings. Aurora uses the code name Muggle, meaning an ordinary person without supernatural abilities—a name that reflects her wish to live an ordinary life in her homeland 48.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, thick blond hair and golden eyebrows; she sometimes wears her hair in a ponytail or pins it up 2 24 41.
  • Eyes: Pale blue, becoming deeper and darker when she uses her supernatural sight 2 40 43.
  • Features: Described as exceptionally beautiful, with striking facial features 2.
  • Clothing: Wears lightweight blue dresses, a white silk nightgown, and cotton pajamas while working at home 3 6 17.
  • Concealed storage: Alters her outfits herself to accommodate numerous hidden pockets for spell materials and ritual implements 47.

Personality

Aurora is affectionate, teasing, and firm with Lumian. She insists that he call her “big sister,” mocks his gaps in knowledge, and uses tricks during combat lessons to teach him vigilance. Beneath the banter, she takes his education and safety seriously 2 8 9.

Her caution about supernatural matters comes from personal suffering rather than simple disapproval. She initially refuses to teach Lumian how to become a Beyonder, knowing that the path is dangerous and irreversible. After encountering evidence of humans transformed into sheep, she questions whether withholding basic mysticism has left him dangerously unprepared 3 38 39 48.

She describes herself as socially anxious most of the time, but sometimes becomes talkative, visits elderly villagers, and tells stories to children. On other occasions, she rides through the mountains while shouting. She later explains that these changes partly reflect isolation, homesickness, and supernatural torment; during some episodes, she almost fails to recognize herself 12 48.

Aurora is also generous toward her neighbors. Poorer households can use her stove or oven to bake bread or smoke meat, provided they supply or pay for the fuel 9.

Abilities & Skills

Warlock Spellcasting

Aurora casts material-based spells by concentrating her spirituality, mentally outlining a symbolic sign—or speaking an incantation—and then using the appropriate ingredients 46.

  • Short-distance flight: Scatters silver dust to float from the roof through a second-floor window 2.
  • Invisible force: Uses an iron-black substance to produce an immense invisible hand that restrains and pushes Lumian toward safety 41.
  • Undead attraction: Surrounds herself with black vapor that draws undead away from Lumian 41.
  • Limits: Requires carried materials, making preparation and storage essential. Repeated casting can leave her exhausted 41 42 47.

Mystery-Prying Sight

Her pathway allows her to examine spiritual bodies in greater detail than many Beyonders of comparable rank and perceive normally invisible presences 45.

  • Recognizes changes in Lumian’s Ether Body and Astral Body that support his claim to be a Hunter 43.
  • Detects an unusually bright Astral Body in deputy parish priest Michel Garigu 45.
  • Uses a collapsible telescope to examine distant targets’ Astral, Ether, and Mental Bodies, provided her view is unobstructed 45.
  • Monitors Lumian’s condition and wakes when something appears wrong 20.
  • Cannot yet externalize the complete Mystery-Prying Eye onto other objects; that requires a higher Sequence 45.
  • Risks serious harm by seeing forbidden things. She refuses to examine Lumian’s hidden condition more deeply when she cannot safely discern it 20 43 45.

Ritual Magic and Mysticism

Aurora teaches Lumian meditation, Spirit Vision, spiritual anatomy, ritual preparation, and the principles of supernatural languages and incantations 45 47 49 50.

  • Constructs walls of spirituality and lights ritual candles with her spirituality 47.
  • Sanctifies a silver dagger using salt, water, and a Hermetic incantation 47.
  • Understands procedures for petitioning deities and summoning Spirit World creatures 46 47.
  • Warns that imprecise summoning descriptions can attract unwanted or dangerous entities 47.
  • Does not possess her own messenger or the precise incantation needed to obtain one 48 49.

White Paper

White Paper is Aurora’s contracted Spirit World creature, kept in a miniature ink bottle. It can carry one of its contractor’s supernatural abilities 45.

  • Can perform only one action, with power no greater than a single Sequence 7 Warlock spell 46.
  • Cannot readily reproduce Aurora’s own spells, which require at least three actions 46.
  • Must leave the real world after twelve hours 49.
  • Its summoning incantation came from knowledge forcibly imparted to Aurora 48.

Combat and Education

  • Masters fighting techniques from multiple schools and repeatedly overwhelms Lumian during training 8 9.
  • Emphasizes awareness of surroundings and exploits lapses in attention during lessons 8.
  • Creates textbooks and examinations, answers Lumian’s questions across a broad range of subjects, and maintains an extensive library 9.

Supernatural Burden: “Knowledge Chases People”

Aurora periodically receives overwhelming amounts of knowledge that she cannot refuse. The phenomenon becomes worse during potion advancement 48.

  • Much of the information is useless, though some provides valuable practical knowledge 48.
  • The resulting pain and pressure have affected her mind and personality 48.
  • She experiences recurring tinnitus, including an episode that forces her to rest while Lumian prepares lunch 8.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Brooch of Integrity — A golden Mystical Item that creates holy sunlight and ignites materials for an anti-ghost secret art. Wearing it suppresses immoral inclinations; prolonged use induces fanaticism 41 42.
  • Spellcasting materials — Includes silver dust for flight, sunflower powder used against undead, and an iron-black substance for invisible force 2 41.
  • Collapsible telescope — A brass-colored instrument that extends the practical range of her supernatural sight 45.
  • Miniature ink bottle — Houses White Paper 45.
  • Silver ritual dagger — Used to construct a wall of spirituality after sanctification 47.
  • “The Wizard of Oz” essential oil — Her own blend, used during ritual demonstrations and chiefly described as smelling pleasant 47.
  • Champagne-gold fountain pen — An intricately patterned pen used for correspondence 3.
  • Battery-powered desk lamp — A gift from a pen pal, preferred over candles and kerosene lamps for nighttime writing 3.

Relationships

  • Lumian Lee — Adoptive younger brother and pupil. She protects and educates him; he seeks supernatural power partly because he refuses to let her face its dangers alone 1 9 20 43.
  • Hella — Fellow society member, vice president, and founder. Aurora hopes to seek her advice through her messenger because Hella is among the organization’s more advanced Beyonders 48.
  • Madame Pualis — A frequent visitor who lends Aurora a pony. Aurora recognizes something abnormal about her but initially considers her restrained rather than openly evil 17 35.
  • Guillaume Béné — Parish priest whose hostility toward Lumian threatens their household. His suspicion that Aurora possesses supernatural powers discourages a direct attack 2 12.
  • White Paper — Contracted Spirit World companion and potential carrier of a supernatural ability 45 46.
  • Pen pals — Provide emotional support, specialized knowledge, and practical gifts; their correspondence is connected to the Curly-Haired Baboon Research Society 3 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Investigating Cordu’s Abnormalities

  • Seeks advice about Lumian’s lucid dream through correspondence, deliberately disguising sensitive details 6.
  • Warns him against provoking Madame Pualis and prepares for a possible move to Trier 12.
  • After the strange owl appears and Naroka dies, forbids nighttime outings and tells Lumian to warn his fellow investigators 15 20.
  • Plans to use Novel Weekly’s writers’ salon as a legitimate reason to leave without attracting suspicion 21.
  • Evidence of humans transformed into sheep prompts her to accelerate their departure 38 39.

The Otherworld Escape Attempt

  • Travels toward Dalege with Lumian in a borrowed carriage; Naroka joins them before the surroundings become the undead-filled Otherworld 40 41.
  • Uses the Brooch of Integrity and sunflower powder to clear a path through the undead 41.
  • When her powder runs out, gives Lumian the brooch and draws the undead toward herself, intending to secure his escape 41.
  • Survives when a crowned woman resembling Madame Pualis passes in a carriage and attracts the undead procession away from her 41 42.
  • Escapes with Lumian, who carries her after spellcasting exhausts her. Their attempt to leave the village then triggers another loop reset 42 43.

Time-Loop Investigation and Lumian’s Training

  • Initially loses the memories of previous loops and must be convinced by Lumian’s account. His knowledge of the privately named Brooch of Integrity is a key piece of evidence 35 43.
  • Suggests that the loop’s final scene is likely central to breaking it, reasoning from both narrative structure and ordinary logic 43.
  • Joins the investigation using her supernatural sight and begins remedying Lumian’s lack of basic mystical training 43 45 47.
  • Abandons a planned summons of Hella’s messenger after recognizing that its attempt to leave Cordu could repeatedly restart the loop. She instead proposes sending a plea for help in a sealed box down the river 49.
  • Guides Lumian through true meditation and Spirit Vision, confirming his successful activation and explaining what he can perceive 49 50.
