Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Sequence 9: Hunter — Red Priest pathway 27 Brewed and drank a potion using the Shotgun Monster’s Beyonder characteristic and the mysterious lady’s formula. Survived severe pain and interference from a voice associated with his chest symbol. Gained enhanced physical abilities, senses, tracking, environmental analysis, wilderness knowledge, and danger intuition; these remained undiminished in reality 23 24 25 27.
  • Early potion digestion: Began sensing digestion after recognizing Cordu as a dangerous jungle in which patience and caution were essential to survival. No complete digestion or subsequent Sequence advancement is documented 37.
  • Persistence through resets: Retained his Hunter abilities after time returned to March 29. Killing the restored Shotgun Monster yielded no second characteristic, since he had already absorbed it 33 35.

Background / History

Before meeting Aurora, Lumian lived as a vagrant. That life taught him to seize opportunities decisively, endure patiently when none appeared, and never dismiss someone as harmless merely because they seemed weak 6 48.

Aurora initially gave him food rather than intending to adopt him. He continued following her and helping with chores until she relented. She brought the nearly starving thirteen-year-old to Cordu, named him Lumian, and gave him her surname. He says he has forgotten his former name 1 43.

During their five years together, Aurora privately educated him and trained him in fighting. His knowledge of geography exceeded that of most villagers, but he preferred pursuing supernatural power to preparing for his entrance examination. After discovering Aurora’s abilities, he repeatedly sought a way to become powerful enough to protect her 3 8 9 10.

Appearance

  • Early physical condition: Describes himself as an ordinary person with a somewhat sturdy body before becoming a Beyonder 3.
  • Clothing: Wears a brown jacket in reality; his dream exploration clothing includes padded cotton garments and a leather jacket 13 25.
  • Chest markings: Bears a black symbol resembling chains of thorns, with a bluish-black symbol over it in the dream. After taking the Hunter potion, the thorn-chain mark briefly appeared and faded in reality, while the bluish-black symbol appeared to remain confined to the dream 27.

Personality

Lumian is mischievous, shameless about his reputation, and skilled at turning conversation into a prank. He invents stories, teases outsiders with the affectionate address “my cabbages,” and uses others’ assumptions to his advantage. His ruined credibility can also serve as cover: villagers regard unusual behavior from him as another joke rather than evidence of an investigation 1 2 16 38 39.

His playfulness conceals a much more serious concern for Aurora. Privately, he worries that her secrets and supernatural suffering will place her in danger. He pursues power despite understanding its risks because he refuses to leave her facing them alone 3 4 20.

He is resourceful and patient, but not consistently cautious. He can wait motionlessly for an opportunity or prepare an elaborate ambush, yet investigates dangerous places without warning Aurora and initially overlooks the risks of abruptly fleeing under official scrutiny 6 21 22 38.

Lumian prioritizes Aurora’s safety over taking responsibility for the village. Nevertheless, he warns the visiting investigators, considers the fate of people transformed into sheep, and becomes determined to find the loop’s key before outside authorities destroy Cordu 21 26 37 39.

Abilities & Skills

Hunter Physiology

  • Strength and agility: Gains what he compares to a bear’s strength and a cat’s agility; punches produce sharp cracks in the air 27.
  • Reflexes and coordination: Performs forceful martial movements in a cramped bedroom without striking nearby objects 27.
  • Practical combat improvement: After becoming a Hunter, kills the Skinless Monster with one axe strike, whereas previously he needed an ambush and extensive mutilation 13 35.

Enhanced Senses and Tracking

  • Identifies faint scents, locates their sources, notices normally imperceptible footprints, and distinguishes subtle distributions of dust 27.
  • Uses traces to recognize that two creatures frequent a section of the Dream Ruins 34.
  • Full sensory enhancement requires concentration; its reduced everyday state does not disrupt normal life 27.
  • These senses do not guarantee detection of supernatural threats: Madame Pualis approaches him without his noticing 40.

Hunting, Traps, and Wilderness Knowledge

  • Intuitively identifies structural weak points and useful features of terrain, bodies, and surroundings, improving trap placement and attacks 27.
  • Gains knowledge of wild plants and animal organs, including potential sources of medicine and weapon poisons 27.
  • Combines traps, concealment, pursuit evasion, and patience. Before obtaining his potion, wounds the Shotgun Monster in a pit and attempts to exhaust it through its injuries 22 23.
  • Possesses heightened danger intuition, particularly noticeable when looking toward the dream ruins 27.

Fighting and Deception

  • Learns martial arts and situational awareness from Aurora; earlier street fights also contribute to his reactions under attack 8 10 27.
  • Uses provocation to encourage an opponent to attack first, attempting this against Pons Béné after becoming a Hunter 28.
  • Blends truth with lies to explain suspicious behavior, including his unauthorized search of Madame Pualis’s castle 40.
  • Reconstructs a possible plea for help by comparing the household’s damaged Little Blue Book with Raymond’s intact copy 20 21.

Meditation and Spirit Vision

  • Crimson-sun meditation: While being strangled by the Shotgun Monster, concentrates on a crimson sun. The monster becomes terrified and helpless, allowing him to kill it; the underlying cause remains unexplained 23.
  • Spirit Vision: Learns to activate and deactivate it under Aurora’s guidance, seeing her blurred Ether Body and the Spirit World creature White Paper 50.
  • Limits: Practice drains his spirituality. Meditation also exposes him to a distant presence in the Spirit World that frightens him 50.
  • Unusual aptitude: Aurora suspects his rapid success with meditation is connected to the two symbols on his chest 50.

Dream Access and Loop Retention

  • The Seven of Wands enables lucid exploration of fog-covered ruins surrounding a reddish-brown peak 5 6.
  • Falling asleep within the dream allows him to wake in reality. His dream house appears to be a refuge that the Skinless Monster will not enter 6 10.
  • Ordinary dream objects cannot be brought into reality, but changes to his condition can cross over. Injuries are less severe upon waking, while potion-granted abilities transfer without weakening 10 25 27.
  • Retains memories and his Hunter characteristic through observed resets. He hypothesizes that the card, dream access, and chest symbols are responsible; this is not established as a power he can consciously control 33 36.
  • According to the mysterious lady, dying in the dream would kill him permanently 6.

Mysticism Knowledge and Limitations

  • Learns the Indestructibility and Convergence Laws of Beyonder Characteristics, the Acting Method, and the dangers of improper advancement from the mysterious lady 29.
  • Studies spiritual bodies, supernatural languages, ritual magic, and Spirit World summoning with Aurora 45 46 48.
  • As a Hunter below Sequence 7, lacks abilities suited to dealing with spirits and ghosts 30.
  • Cannot reproduce Aurora’s material-assisted Warlock spellcasting. His limited spirituality would sustain at most one contracted Spirit World creature, according to her estimate 46 48.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Seven of Wands — Minor Arcana card given by the mysterious lady. Aurora initially finds no curse or anomalous presence in it; it subsequently enables lucid dreaming and remains beneath Lumian’s pillow after a reset 5 6 34.
  • Axe — Principal weapon during his early dream expeditions; used to kill both the Skinless Monster and the Shotgun Monster 13 23.
  • Steel fork / pitchfork — Nearly two meters long; used in preparing for monster encounters and wounding the Shotgun Monster 13 23.
  • Shotgun — Acquired from the monster he kills; remains among his possessions within the dream 27.
  • Hunter potion formula — Supplied by the mysterious lady: one Hunter characteristic, 80 milliliters of red wine, one red chestnut flower, 5 grams of powdered poplar leaves, and 10 grams of basil 25.
  • Little Blue Book — Household copy with words cut out of it, linking his home to the anonymous plea that brought the investigators to Cordu 17 20.

Relationships

  • Aurora Lee — Adoptive older sister, educator, and combat instructor. Protecting her is his chief reason for seeking power; he eventually tells her about his transformation and the loop 1 3 8 43.
  • Mysterious tarot-card lady — Supernatural guide whose identity and intentions remain undisclosed. Provides his card, potion formula, and Beyonder education, but insists that a non-destructive solution to Cordu’s crisis must come from those trapped inside 5 25 26 37.
  • Ryan Koss — Visiting investigator initially drawn into Lumian’s church prank. Lumian later exchanges information with him about the anonymous letter and suspicious villagers 2 15 26.
  • Lya — Visiting investigator amused by his teasing. Recognizes that he deliberately used her group to expose the parish priest’s affair 1 16 26.
  • Valentine — Reserved visiting investigator whose reactions make him a frequent target of Lumian’s jokes. Approves when Lumian presents his opposition to the priest as religious conviction 2 15 26.
  • Raymond Klegg — Village friend and partner in investigating supernatural legends. His copy of the Little Blue Book helps Lumian reconstruct the plea for help 3 8 20.
  • Ava Lizier — Village friend whom Lumian believes has some affection for him. Her killing during the Lent Festival, followed by her restoration in the reset, becomes crucial evidence that time has reversed 7 11 33.
  • Guillaume Béné — Parish priest and adversary. Lumian exposes his affair partly in retaliation for his designs on Aurora; their conflict later becomes central to the loop investigation 2 32 43.
  • Madame Pualis — Aurora’s acquaintance and the priest’s mistress. Lumian resents her unsuitable marriage suggestions for Aurora and investigates her suspected supernatural involvement 17 26 39.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Village Legends and the Dream Ruins

Lumian’s search for supernatural power begins with village legends and his recurring gray-fog dream. The mysterious lady gives him the Seven of Wands, opening access to the ruins. He first escapes the Skinless Monster, then returns with an ambush and kills it. A later hunt yields the Shotgun Monster’s characteristic, which becomes the main ingredient of his Hunter potion 3 5 6 10 13 23 24 27.

Cordu’s Abnormalities and the First Remembered Reset

His investigation connects the outsiders’ anonymous letter to his own household’s Little Blue Book. Naroka’s death, the strange owl, and suspicious activity around the parish priest persuade him to urge Aurora to leave. Before they can escape, the Lent Festival turns violent: Ava is killed, villagers become deranged, and Lumian confronts Guillaume Béné before awakening on March 29, 1358, with his Hunter abilities intact 15 17 20 21 32 33.

Failed Escape and Joint Investigation

In the next remembered loop, Lumian discovers that Pierre Berri’s sheep may be transformed humans and witnesses Louis Lund giving birth at Madame Pualis’s castle. His attempted departure with Aurora leads them into a procession of undead and back toward Cordu. A second escape route triggers another reset 38 39 41 42.

Lumian then tells Aurora the truth. His knowledge of her privately named Brooch of Integrity and his predictions of repeated events convince her. They begin investigating together, while she fills gaps in his practical mysticism education; their surveillance of Michel Garigu reveals a transparent, lizard-like figure emerging from his mouth 43 45 50.

Working Model of the Loop

Observed or proposed rule Lumian’s understanding
Starting point The remembered resets return him to March 29, before the Lent Festival 33 42.
Time limit Identifies the twelfth night as the loop’s limit 43.
Spatial boundary Cordu and its surrounding area; attempting to leave restarts the loop 42 43.
Parish priest restriction Concludes that killing Guillaume Béné causes an early restart 32 43.
Objects leaving the area Letters and telegrams can leave without triggering a reset. He theorizes that this explains why the book’s missing paper cannot be restored 35 49.
Outside intervention The mysterious lady confirms that her means of breaking the loop would destroy Cordu. Lumian fears the authorities will eventually choose the same solution 37.
